Shore troopers are pretty much the storm troopers marines, it's like saying "why do we need marines when we have the army" and in a galaxy spanning empire, it would be safe to have troopers geared toward specific war theaters or maybe they just had the resources and made them for that one planet knowing they were going to be deployed there indefinitely.

Imperial Marines would be the troopers in an initial assault from their space craft. They would not need a separate corps of Marines for a maritime assault.

The empire does have a regular army (made up mostly of conscripts) the Stormtroopers however were more like the marines of the empire in that they are an elite fighting force and there were different types of stormtroopers designed for different environments such as Shoretroopers, Sandstoopers, Snowtroopers, Foresttroopers, Scouttroopers, aqua troopers and many others.

Thing is, stormtroopers ARE marines. They're garrisoned aboard naval vessels(star destroyers) to act as ship security and to be mobilized with direct naval support. That's exactly what marines are. Shoretroopers are literally just regular ass soldiers with different armor guarding beaches... Which seems like an unnecessary investment when you can just use standard troops

Easier explanations for some of these: U-Wings on Hoth: don't know the full armaments of a U-Wing, but if they are a gunship/troopship and have a heavy compliment of weaponry then they'd be extremely useful on Hoth. Reason for not being used: climate. Snowspeeders were still be adapted to the cold and maintenance was probably overwhelmed with that task as the Empire showed up. Probably just never got around to it. Shoretroopers: You wouldn't see any on Tatooine because the 501st element there was hunting for Rebels that had escaped to the planet side. 501st aboard the Devastator were scrambled after the pod left quickly trying to get the Death Star plans meaning basic equipment for a warm weather environment would be adequate enough instead of bringing in a specialty unit that Shoretroopers probably comprise. You'd probably see them if Star Wars ever did any other films or shows with Tatooine as the focus Post-Tantive IV. Deathtroopers: If they're Imperial Intelligence soldiers then they'd be rare. You wouldn't see them on Endor because Palpatine would not have them deployed on the surface, but rather units of the Imperial Army and Stormtrooper Corp. If they're Intelligence shocktroopers then they're primary focus is on surrounding systems of Endor's moon and anywhere else the Empire needs a discrete operation to search and destroy. When I hear "Imperial Intelligence troopers" that tells me you'd see them at max in squad level strength (12 man unit) and a minimum 4 to 6 to operate quickly, quietly and effectively. Endor was meant to be a massive military trap so it's best to have a full Stormtrooper Legion present use to large-scale operations rather than units accustomed to small spec ops.

I don't see how your first two explanations are easier than "U-wings were small troop transports and not needed in any of the battles we witnessed" or "There were no Shore Troopers anywhere else because there were no shores", which were the two explanations provided in the video. As for the Deathtroopers, there is NO reason if there were any around at the time that Palpatine wouldn't utilize them in the Battle of Endor. The Battle of Endor was an all-or-nothing gambit to lure the rebels into a trap and overpower them. The Deathtroopers were very skilled elite soldiers. Regardless of their more specialized roles, we have seen Deathtroopers guarding a single military officer who brought them with him to two Imperial controlled systems which at the time he had no idea would be attacked, one of which was considered one of the SAFEST and MOST-GUARDED Imperial military base in the galaxy, and we have seen them back up a defensive ground assault at the orders of said military officer. Regardless of their otherwise designated roles, we've literally seen them in a very active, large-scale, non-specialist battle that seemed to the Imperials to be EVEN LARGER than what the attack actually consisted of. If Krennic decided that his guard would be useful in a military assault, then the Emperor, who was staking his entire Empire and the second Death Star on the Battle of Endor, would have no reason not to utilize Death Troopers if it meant fully crushing the Alliance once and for all.

Well, Shoretroopers were meant for humid environments with lots of water. Tatooine is, well, DRIER THAN HELL. In the Death Troopers' case, there was only one squad, and it was with Krennic. They all got blown up with the Scarif base.

Funny how everyone is asking this question but no one was screaming "where were the Scout Troopers" in A New Hope and Empire when Return of the JEDI dropped, I was in the US Army and during my service I never got to see all of the different types of troops and vehicles we had at our disposal so this is all easily plausible, if anything with all the different types of planets and crazy environments to fight in inside the STAR WARS Universe that situation alone is enough merit to understanding why we don't see Dolphins perched on Telephone Poles.

The only place I can think TIE strikers might have been used is on cloud city, the empire seemed to occupy the facility long enough and could have deployed dedicated in-atmosphere fighters. Then again maybe cloud city was too high in atmosphere or the imperial invasion force just didn't have them... I guess there's an excuse for all these new additions somewhere.

on cloud city they were setting a trap out of a star destroyer, the standard ties work well in atmosphere. the cloud cars were the atmospheric fliers for cloud city and used for standard civilian control. no need to bring in new units and tip off the people you are trying to bait.

I don't see what the issue is........sandtroopers were only in ANH, as were the y-wings. Snowtroopers were only in ESB, as were the tie bombers, and scout troopers were only in ROTJ, as were A-wings, b-wings, tie interceptors, and the mon cal ships. Its a big universe and the empire has a lot of different types of troops/ships, not only are some specialised units only going to be found in certain situations, but it's also conceivable that they might not be available as they may be occupied in some other location.

Actually, Y-Wings were briefly seen in Empire, and prominently featured in Jedi during the battle of Endor. Snowtroopers were only in Empire because Hoth was the only snow planet we saw. TIE bombers may have been present during the Endor battle, but otherwise they're absence outside of Empire is obvious due to their intended purpose. All good points with the other troopers and ships. It all comes down to the intended requirements according to the environment and mission orders.

Those movies came out during the Cold War, when military tactics were rather static and akin to playing a strategy game where you select all your forces and right click where you want them to attack without any real thought.

Chad Barati Helicopters were used like dropships in Vietnam and tactics actually got fairly complex. Just google Francis Marion, he used guerrilla warfare back when armies would march up, shoot at each other, and politely wait for the enemy to reload, "Gentleman's Warfare." That's not even to mention the telegraph and railroads during the American Civil War. Tactics were far from static.

Or something along the lines of maritime patrol units, less for amphibious assault and more for patrolling docks, ports and shorelines. Looking at a side by side comparison of their armour with a standard stormtrooper, the shoretroopers have substantially less armour (none on the upper legs and much larger gaps between plates on the body, neck and arms). This would suggest they are less likely to be shot at (why bother wasting materials on armouring people who generally are never fired upon, the lighter armour would also make sense if the main danger is falling into water as opposed to enemy action.

My hypotheses are: 1. Death Troopers are the precursors to the Shadow Troopers, elite stormtroopers used primarily as bodyguards for high ranking Imperial officers, in this case, Director Krennic. 2. The TIE Striker was exclusive to Sarif as a means of defense as a last resort, and they were mostly destroyed by X-wings or in the tidal wave from the Death Star attack. 3. U-wings were one of the oldest ships of the Rebellion, never mass produced and eventually phased out due to technical issues, lack of firepower, and the Rebellion's defensive mindset between the battles of Yavin and Endor. 4. Shore Troopers were nothing more than local security.

The only explanation that I can come with about shoretroopers being deployed instead of sandtroopers is that they are either an experimental, or highly specialised unit. Thus, and Rogue One looking like a bellic, intense film, I think we can say without much risk that the main battle taking place in the movie is so important the Empie actually sees necessary the deployment of the shoretroopers to take advantage of their specialisation. But it's just speculation. We'll have to wait to confirm it.

Star Wars Explained From what we see from the trailers, the hover tanks are being used in crowded streets. I think they'd fair just fine in the forest. And the U-wing also could have been used on Hoth. It's purpose isn't to drop troops on the ground, it's purpose is to carry troops. That includes dropping and picking up (I.E. evacuating Echo base). But I do really agree with your explanation for the lack of Death Troopers. But things like shore troopers and tie-strikers are just such unnecessary additions that it's pointless to even try and justify them. They're just there to sell new toys. But the AT-ACT is the most insultingly blatant redesign of an existing vehicle just to sell toys of it.

Dylan Murphy Hoth was a secret base. It wouldn't have much need for troop transport considering the trenches were close enough to Echo Base they could run back. The only transport they'd need were the full-fledged transport ships.

I like your analysis of Shore Troopers. To be fair, there's tons of different storm trooper types that appear in novels that really don't make sense. Shore Troopers I like to think of as Marines. They are for storming beaches. A very small, specialist type unit that probably wouldn't be seen almost anywhere else in the galaxy. And in all honesty, you could probably take a shore trooper, outfit him in standard Storm Trooper armor, and reassign him to another garrison if needed. So we probably did indeed see Shore Troopers in the original trilogy...they were just wearing different equipment. That's my opinion, anyway. The Empire was huge. They had resources aplenty, but they were also flexable and tactful with how they deployed their soldiers

I think it's ridiculous to say that stormtroopers can't hit their target. True, in the movies they can't, but I meanin the actual universe it wouldn't make sense for an infantry unit to never be able to sit a target. The only reason they don't hit them in the movies, is because, well, it's an old movie and they had to make it so that Luke and the crew could actually survive the films. With so many troopers coming at them at once, they have to be made to shoot terribly. But in the universe? Yes, they indeed can hit their target, otherwise they could not conquer the galaxy. Sheer numbers you say? No, even when many troopers, if they can't hit their target, they can't conquer a galaxy. I hate this stereotype about stormtroopers.

Actually in the movies the stormtroopers do hit people even the main characters such as in episode 6 a stormtrooper manged to hit leias shoulder despite the fact that she was in cover and he was far away and of course there are all those rebel soldiers who died in the first scene in episode 4.

why do you need an atat for cargo? its like importing your goods in a tank. just use a ship or maybe even a empire mass produced sandcrawler. also my theory on shore troopers is that they are used on tropical salty humid planets, because regular sand/storm troopers armor and gear would get gummed up pretty quickly due to sand and salt. note how they have no tight armor joints and are mostly made of fabric.

I would guess the cargo vehicle uses the same chassis as the AT-AT to simplify logistics, a base can use the same parts for both the combat and support vehicle, pilots get the same training, etc. I'm not sure why they would use the AT-AT instead of are smaller more mass produced vehicle. Yeah given we see the Sand troopers in a sort of tropical jungle area they are probably equip for the high humidity climate.

You really are missing the most important point, director Krennic was the Director of Advanced Weapons research. Everything he uses could be advanced weapon prototypes that may or may not be put into mass production depending on cost/effectiveness.

Star Wars Explained yeah, that's a hard pill to swallow. It's not a very complicated design. It's just a tie designed for in-atmosphere flight, right? Not terribly abstract a concept and even if they were prototypes (which I have my doubts) they're destruction wouldn't really stop the empire from manufacturing more since their would be detailed specs and data from the entire design process wherever the heck they decided to manufacture them, but who knows? Maybe the rebels attack the R&D facility they were designed at and blow it sky high, or perhaps the Empire decided their wasn't a significant enough distinction in performance from your average TIE. I do feel the same skepticism towards the experimental theory when it comes to the Death Troopers too. They're likely just a special forces unit or element of the storm corps. There's nothing really experimental about soldiers with superior training. It's pretty tried tested and true when it comes to our own militaries.

Star Wars Explained I don't think Death Troopers were on Endor's moon simply because the Empire wasn't banking on the rebels making it to the moon where the shield generator was. Of course they prepared for the possibility, but I don't think they thought the attack would make it that far. That plus as Commander23c, Death Troopers made up Commander Krennic's personal guard, so I don't think we'd see many around since Sidious had the Imperial Guard.

I love your videos, Alex, as always. Thank you for this one! I rationalize that we don't see every style of armor/vehicle in every story/movie... pretty much because the tableau is so vast. For instance, in WWII movies, we don't see every uniform and every tank and every weapon in every tale told. They're usually specific because of the location/situation. Then I imagine the STAR WARS galaxy being thousands of habitable worlds larger than the details depicted so far. The more stories they tell, the more details we'll see. Perhaps Death Troopers and TIE strikers, etc. were all in there (or we'll have to imagine they were)... just not where the camera was pointing at any/every given moment.

Shoretroopers could be used only in tropical environments. Jungle warfare is very different from desert fighting and the environments are of course radically different. As an alternative they could just engage in littoral operations. River deltas, swamps, coastal marshes, beach lands, etc. These operations require specialized training and equipment just to be able to maneuver and carry out routine patrols. I could see the Empire indulging in the dubious tactic of presence patrolling.

Concerning Shore Troopers, they could be the Empire's version of a Coast Guard. They could be trained especially to defend coastlines from amphibious assaults. The reason we don't see them on Tatooine is because there are no oceans on the planet. Sand Troopers specialize in desert combat, and thus would be more suited to the planet.

it was a close system, and during the day that distance between Takodana and the Hosnian system would make the planets difficult to see, because of the sun light on the Takodana's atmosphere. The reason why they can see the Starkiller laser beans is because these emit far more light then planets in space (being raw energy) and the sun light would make it only lesse brighter but not impossible to see. Same goes to the explosions

No, Hosnia is far away from Takodana (see the official map) and, even if it was not the case, the speed of light would have make them witness it years or centuries after the destruction... I read that the starkiller weapon didn't emit a laser beam, but a sort of energy moving IN the hyperspace (that's why this base could destroy hosnia in less than a few hours in spite of the thousands light years between the two systems). Also, the geometry and properties of hyperspace are differents than those from real space and allowed large parts of the galaxy to witness the Hosnian system's death.. Max In The Hat well at the same time and although I understand your point, many of not all, but many of the old eu designs did have in lore reasons as to why they weren't used yet. in the case of the interceptor it was designed as an upgraded tie and an all around replacement, but then endor happened before the empire could properly mass produce it. As for the A-wing I don't really know,but I speculate that eitheir jan dodonna didn't design it yet, or that since the rebels were trying to fire torpedos down the exhaust port that the a-wing which used concussion missiles would not be useful there.

I would say that Shore Troopers are the Empire's version of marines. The original purpose of marines in our universe when the idea of them was established was to serve as onboard-security personnel on ships, serve as sharpshooters during naval battles, board enemy ships, protect ships from enemy boarders, conduct raids from the sea, secure a beachhead for an amphibious invasion, and serve as security on coasts. That sounds to me what Shore Troopers would serve as.

I think that death troopers are the new equivalent to the I.S.C. (Imperial Storm Commandos) That were definitely cannon until the whole rewrite... They were even given better ships, tech and gear.... TheBfutgreg It was great. The Empire was actually competent. I am a little mad at the presence of the "villain monologues instead of killing the protag, leaving time for a rescue" trope, but the movie made up for it later.

U wings were present on Endor, the battle raged for days after the death star was destroyed, long after the ewok party, and also when the rebel fleet arrives to assault the death star and they realize the shield is still up, they would have immediately taken action and sent more troops via U wing to the ground, thus explaining how the ten or so rebels in tiderium quickly became seemingly hundreds. On screen we follow a particular set of heroes stories, not even close to the full scale of the battle. U wings can be seen in a Canon appearance in battlefront 2s campaign dropping off troops aswell

The death troopers are probably a sort of Delta/special forces trained to work in small group Intelligence, reconnaissance, counter insurgency, destruction and sabotage Able to achieve delicate mission

There's speculation that the Death Troopers ARE droids. Their toys are significantly taller (6'4" or so compared to 6')and skinnier than the other troopers. Like, Battledroid skinny.

The Death Troopers are present in all the OT battles in Star Wars Battlefront II (Death star II, Yavin IV, Hoth) and so we’re still trained and operational by the time of ROTJ... hmmm...

The "Death Troopers" or Advanced Weapons Research Troopers (AWR Troopers) was a division headed by Director Krennic and focused primarily on issues within the Imperial Navy and were rarely used in ground assaults. Their prime directive was the protection of high ranking officials and high priority targets outside of the Imperial Senate. Krennic however used these elite troops as his personal weapon against the budding Rebel Alliance.

Mark, everybody complains about the final Obi-Wan vs Vader but if you look at it without thinking about Maul, it is still a very good + Vader had a heavy suit and the space in that small corridor could not make Vader and Obi-Wan jump around + the fight was more Phsycological than Acrobatic.
