As always Dale, thanks for sharing your info. Couldn’t have learned any of this without your input. Caught my first beavers this season by watching your videos on making sets with footholds. Placing that mud mound for them to bump their chest was a game changer. Always looking forward to the next video!!

Drought was a serious issue in my area. The trappers who had areas that held water did well. I was trapping backwater areas where I should be ankle of deeper in mud and everything was hard pan, you are absolutely correct they need water. Our only 20-30 pounders were out if a pond everything else was 45 to our biggest of 68 this year. My numbers suffered on beaver. Thanks for the insight.

Maybe the dry summers we have been having allowed predators to access the huts as well. I've been pulling fully developed kits from momma's here.
@billingsleybrandtrappinglu153111 ай бұрын
And that could be too An Arkansas Trapper. But I also know y'all were powder dry in December when I was there. But you got a lot of water in January. Now if those beaver knew the water was coming which we know they're better at predicting weather than Willard Scott or Al Roker ever were. Then it would make sense that during the breeding season of December and January they went ahead and took. Would it not? Just my opinion. I appreciate you buddy.
@AnArkansasTrapper11 ай бұрын
I'm not seeing the numbers of adolescents here either. The last year we had a dry spring and this year is looking to be the same. I am of the thought that even though we will be getting kits born, very little water makes it easier for the cats and coyotes to get a hold of the young. I doubt there will be any complaints of the numbers going down but believe we may be seeing a decrease in them. Which won't be any complaints from anyone but the trappers. @@billingsleybrandtrappinglu1531

Might want to re-think the delayed implantation idea as the data does not mention it. Whereas "Drought" conditions can affect a female's estrus cycle and could lead to a skip for reproductive mating at a normal time of year. This could account for less beaver of the 2 -2.5 age group showing up in harvest data. There also is some thought that "Drought" causes this age group of beaver to remain with the colony and not "disperse" during spring "low water" conditions. Just some other observations noted in the literature....... the mike

Where I am at in the South, we got the water LOL I got 2 yr olds coming up and munching on the front lawn grass HAHAHAHA! They ain't touching the trees of screwing with the dock floats... Yet. That explanation made soooooo much sense and I had no clue they could delay implantation that long!

Spring fever here in Alabama means getting ready to garden not trap. We do not have a spring beaver season even though we have no closed season for trapping them. We cannot sell any part of a beaver caught outside of the furbearer trapping season which here runs from October 31st to the end of February.
@billingsleybrandtrappinglu153111 ай бұрын
Here in Iowa Jimmy our beaver season runs until April 15th. Missouri it goes until March 31st. I think it's the same in Illinois. Wisconsin I think it's April 31st and Minnesota it goes until May 15 I believe. So here in the northern states we can alot longer yet
