They basically are; right down to being made of metal! Beavers teeth are reinforced with high levels of iron, which gives them that characteristic orange coating. On top of that, the iron coating is actually uneven: thicker on the outside edge and thinner on the inside. Because of this, as they chew, their teeth file down unevenly, forming a sharp chisel shape So they essentially have self sharpening iron chisels for teeth! More fun facts: like all rodents, their lips can seal behind their exposed teeth, so they can chew without getting anything in their mouths.

The sounds of those razor sharp teeth through wood is so relaxing. There are many beavers where I live and I never stop being impressed by their tree felling skills. They just about always gets the tree to fall where they want it to, and that is some serious skill doing that with your teeth. I'm more amazed that the beaver tolerated the cameraman this much. Not everyday you see wild animals, seeing humans standing some distance away unmoving, proceed to just do their usual daily business like nothing's happening.
@Micro-Moo Жыл бұрын
@@hydrosphagus9672 Hm... One day I photographed an American robin on eggs at the distance of a hand and spent about half an hour at the spot. Not only was she used to the camera and tolerated my presence, she even left the nest leaving me along with her eggs to get some food, so I could touch the eggs. I also saw some beavers in a very crowded park. The ability of many wild animals to adapt themselves to humans is often underestimated.
@Micro-Moo Жыл бұрын
@@jamesofallthings3684 Exactly! In contrast to that, my daughter had spent hours not moving just to see if a usual wild baby rabbit could become used to her well enough to approach very closely and start taking some oat grain she offered. After a few days, she succeeded. And my son managed to grow a little pine and a little spruce out of seeds in a small pot. At the same time, I appreciate the author's patience, too. He managed to get very close to the beaver's life.

@@hydrosphagus9672 Beavers are incredibly skiddish, they'll hold their breathe for 10-15 minutes or go to their den to hide even just hearing people. I used to walk or bike a trail that had several ponds that beavers occupied and not once in several years did I see one of them. There were a few times I could hear splashes as one likely dove under water but nothing more.

@COSMO from what I've been told, there aren't going to be several beavers in one place unless they're breeding and raising young. One partner goes out to collect, while the other stays back to put in work on the home, and care for young if there. When the young grow up, the males will go out on their own to search for their own partner and territory etc.
