There's also the possiblity that no technology can overcome the basic truths Einstein suggests about the speed of light being both the maximum speed limit and practically unattainable for any object with mass. The fastest spaceship humans have ever made can reach speeds of roughly 400,000 mph. At that speed it would take 59 million years to reach the closest star. Even light takes 4 years to reach the closest star, meaning even if we and they had compatible radios and wanted to communicate at light speed, if I say "hello," today it'll be 8 years before I hear back, "hello, who is this?" At these speeds getting enough data to even begin deciphering their language would take more than a lifetime. And that's just the closest star to us. Our galaxy is more than 100,000 light years across, meaning it would take 100,000 years for a radio message to reach the furthest star. But our galaxy is just one of billions in the sky; for the rest of the galaxies, even if we could reach the theoretically unreachable speed of light, it would take millions of years to travel to the closest. It seems to me incredibly arrogant to think the ability to "fill" space with civilization is so inevitable to intelligent life, we should be surpised their developments haven't blocked the sky, even though the technology to do anything resembling this doesn't even exist as a hypothetical to us. I think it's pretty likely that a good percentage of star systems develop intelligent life at some point, but we're all just too remote from each other in space and time to ever link up before we each go extinct.
@mac1950004 күн бұрын
@@craigrussell3062 The scenario Frank was talking about doesn't require faster-than-light travel (which is impossible as far as we know). Even traveling at a small fraction of the speed of light, say 10 percent, it would be possible for a civilization to colonize most of the galaxy within a million years.

Our galaxy is about 100,000 light years across. Let's say that an advance civilization somehow detected us about halfway across the Milky Way. That means the signal they received would be about 50,000 years old. So even if they committed to contacting us, that would take, even at the speed of light, 50,000 years to arrive here on the off chance that we are still around. And even at warp 10 that would still be 5,000 years. Hope they pack appropriately....

Life is probably contained largely to places where it adapted. The chemistry and conditions have to be too perfect, it's exceedingly rare that any life can find a survivable planet for themselves so expansion isn't common. Almost every planet with life is unique. If there was only 500 planets in the galaxy where humans could migrate to and live, could we even find one, and then get there?

There still isn't any proof that life came from non-living matter. Not one scientist can bring proof that life evolved from non-living things. Until there is at least proof on that fundamental, there just won't be much science on this other topic since it's very related.

I only just recently, about 6 months ago, put up the classic "I want to believe" poster in my home office, as cheesy as that is, as it's a constant reminder to me that I do indeed want to believe, but I must approach everything with a healthy dose of skepticism. The real question to ask is this : Describe the proof « the scientific community » would need to declare alien life exists ? The second one is: Describe the the proof needed to declare aliens have visited Earth ? You will find that it is very hard for any scientist to explain and describe the « proof » because in science, you need tangible evidence that your peers can study and corroborate on their own and repeat the experience with constant results. And even if the scientific community had access to an Alien body and could study it thoroughly, their final conclusion would be « it’s the first and unique life form of this kind found on Earth » It might be a new species we hadn’t find before. » In no way they could demonstrate it came from another planet. That’s how science works….
@User-jr7vf4 күн бұрын
For the first question, we just need to identify life on another planet. As for the second question, it is well understood what every life form on Earth must have. If we find some organism that is different from that, then it is alien. You can't simply wave your hand and claim it is just an Earthly body that is quite unique, because that body cannot simply pop into existence out of the blue.
@robertl.69194 күн бұрын
@@User-jr7vf You are still eluding my questions. First, scientists across the planet have to agree on what data received from our instruments would establish that life exists on another planet, without a doubt. We could push the question to " intelligent alien life" as that is the subject of this topic. That needs to be universally defined. Then, about your argument of alien life on Earth, there are some problems I can point out. First, what if aliens are made out of cells and DNA very similar to ours ? There are still thousands of species, specially in the oceans that we have'nt yet studied. Lifeforms that thrives on volcanic underwater eruptions are one example of recently discovered lifeforms. And what if there were hundreds or thousands of alien bodies scattered all over the world ? Would scientists have to conclude they are part of our natural earth's evolution like other rare species or dinosaurs were ? Even if alien biology was different from our would it mean they could not have been originally from Earth from a distant past ? My questions to the scientific community are much more complex than what you stated.
