Where did all this Eastern Gamma grass come from?

Ha! The wife and I just spent the day driving around and gleaning gamagrass seed on the roadsides. It’s so rare none of the locals around here even know what it is (local ranchers included). The looks we were getting from folks in the passing cars😁 we have a lot of big and little blue coming in finally, but no gamagrass yet. Do the cattle eat the seed heads of the Gama? Looking good, can’t wait to get some going in our bottom fields. Also what’s you preferred c4 grass so far? Thanks Josh

I would have to say probably Eastern Gamma. But so far we don’t have any Big or little blue so I don’t have much to compare it to.😂

@@runningtfarmsnc we’re in the exact opposite situation. We have lots of big and little blue coming in, but no gamagrass. That being said I probably won’t even graze it this season and just let it establish since 90% is freshly germinated. I thought it was massive stands of new broom sedge for the longest time. I almost cried lol. It’s hard to distinguish the two from each other when juvenile, well at least to the untrained eye.

great job Josh, you have all the right conditions to let things grow, and the cows are helping too. the growth, the rest, the solar energy. everyone should strive to have their farm look like this. I think Greg Judy in MO. mentioned his started growing when he hauled in some inferior hay for ground cover. Please show an after photo if you can when you rotate.

How close are you to the city? Have you tried running chickens then spreading woodchips first year on a least beat up farm? We are close to the city we spread woodchips mix with chopped cardboard or leaves (sometimes all of them at once) on beat up farmland if they are in the zone of a city or large town. Since we are paid to process the cardboard. Then a bit of woodchips and we let it grow. It's like skipping 2 years of recovery and being paid to do it. Via taking the tippings and chopping that cardboard.

Wow that's helping big in a drought. We have a start of Eastern Gamma coming up. We're trying to get away from a lot of making hay, but I'm curious if eastern Gamma makes good hay? Thanks

Yes to my understanding it makes excellent hay although I’ve never made any we just graze ours.
