You make a good point in that recovery days only count if there are favorable growing conditions!

Looks like a 2nd cutting hay field but u know your soil is better than any hay field

Looks great Josh! Have you done any rumen supplementation at certain times of the year in order to accomplish the two goals of 1. full harvest efficiency of the grazing cell, and yet 2. keeping manure pats looking decent? Or would you just supplement with hay in order to get it trampled down?
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
We are fortunate to be in an area that with proper planning of our calving season we don’t have to give any supplemental protein. If you’re in an area that’s predominantly warm season forages some supplemental protein will have to be given to keep protein at or above 8% for dry cows and 12% or above for lactating cows or growing animals.

The leafiness of that regrowth is outstanding! I just started using this methodology this year with improved results. However, I think my soil is still too poor to support really leafy regrowth because my cool season grasses start to want to go to seed before the leaves have had full regrowth. Stems start shooting up after like only 20 days to rest this time of year.

After you are able to stockpile some areas of your farm for a full growing season followed by Nonselective grazing with appropriate recovery periods you will start to see improvements very quickly. There’s something kind of magic that starts to happen in the soil with those season long stockpile areas. Not to mention you also have a lot of winter feed.

I’ve heard Jim talk about how you’re building soil on the season long stockpile areas. If I’m correct the way I see it is your grazing area is just to get you by, you aren’t really building soil in that area. What exactly is it that improves in the stockpile area is it letting everything reach full maturity?

I’m in south Louisiana so our warm season grasses like Bahia and Bermuda are much different than your fescue and orchardgrass.
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
In your area with those grasses you would be correct. You would need to graze those forages a little younger to favor your livestock because they loose quality so quickly. I believe in your situation most of the soil improvement would come in the stockpiled area. Which would of course be alternated every year.

Jim Elizondo has a tremendous amount of experience in an area and forage base such as yours. Would highly recommend you try to make it out to his school in Tallahassee, I think you would find it very well worth your time and money.

The mobile poly pipe is what we’re going to around here. I’ve removed my Mirafounts and replaced with hydrants. Does the water come in hot or does the poly get adequate shade in the grass? Thanks
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
It can get hot it does get some shade but can get hot. Most of the time there’s enough continuous water moving through the pipe to keep it cool enough.

Good morning, Josh! What’s the minimum number of moves/day you think can effectively accomplish non-selective grazing?
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
You can do very good with once per day moves depending on your forage. You will get a little less harvest efficiency due to fouling but you can still have very good results.

Hi Josh I notice a little bit of pasture rejection on your second round would you have liked to have extended the return time?
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
I would like to have more dung beetles!😂 We are seeing our dung beetles increasing but not to the point where they should be just yet. The forage was at full recovery and very palatable with high quality. So that’s why I made the decision to stop grazing forward on the farm and come back and start our second pass. We try to keep the best quality forage possible in front of our cows during the growing season.
@davidcornforth3786
@davidcornforth3786 Ай бұрын
That’s exactly what we are trying to do here in the uk much to the distrust of other uk regenerative graziers so is your thinking that increased dung betel pops will eliminate the little bit of pasture rejection rather than extending return time
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
@@davidcornforth3786 Yes I believe so. Also if I have to sacrifice a little bit of harvest efficiency to keep the best quality grass I have in front of my cows I’m ok with that.

How wide are your cells and don’t you have a lot of friction loss in your long water hose to your tank?
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
I usually try to set them up so that it doesn’t take longer than 3 days to graze them so they are always changing due to the amount of forage in the cell and number of animals. In this video the cell is 40 paces wide and they get 4 20 pace breaks per day. In regards to the pipe yes we get some friction loss but I limit the access to the tank with poly wire so that only 2-3 cows can drink at a time to allow the water to better keep up. I’m currently only using a 150 gallon tank for ease of moving it everyday but if it becomes an issue we will use a larger tank.

Hi Josh and thanks for great educational video. So if you get rain and good re growth to replenish the roots will you go back across this same piece a 3rd and potential 4th time in a single growing season and let other mature stuff go ? If so what about the additional manure pats that will keep accumulating which cattle don’t like to graze until following year due to high potassium and nitrates ? It looked like after 1st graze about 25% they did not care for from previous manure pats and after this 2nd graze it might be 50%.
@runningtfarmsnc
@runningtfarmsnc Ай бұрын
We will continue to graze this as many times this year as we can get fully recovered forage. We are a little short on dung beetles to help get the manure buried quickly but are seeing more every year. We will likely get 1-2 more passes with favorable weather. We will allow this area to stockpile all next growing season.

@@runningtfarmsnc I am into composting and soil health in that soil biology needs to properly convert manure nutrients into amino acids, amino sugars and protein peptides before a plant is healthy for man or beast to eat. Most plants will just grab these raw manure nutrients and uptake them before biology got them converted which is why cows ovoid and most times refuse to eat this grass except maybe the tops as certainly the bases will be bitter.
