It happened with strange relationship. He handed that song after he wrote it in the early 80s he handed it off to Wendy and Lisa and probably another Melvoin in their right, They turned it into a fruity white pop rock bangles all Paisley underground sound bullshit at the time. Prince then re-produced it and takes it back and makes it black. He makes it his song again and improves it. Even live in concert he completely re-imagined it even further Because again it’s his song. Another example of this is witness for the prosecution.
