Salamat kaayo for this beautiful explanation! It is important we return ourselves to our roots and return customs and culture back to the people they were birthed from (like how “paroles” belong to the kapampangan people). We need to know these things to better know ourselves. Thank you again!

My Dad made one from coat hangers and hung one from our front porch in New Jersey in the 1970's. I didn't know it was some kind of ethnic thing. My wife, (asawa), who was born in your country, would call this bariotic. I have been in the Philippines less than the fingers on my hands, but she was born and raised there. Whatever my Dad did is not what modern Pinoys do. It is like what I know of the Philippines is the way the Philippines was before EDSA I and the deposition of the Marcoses. 😞😞😞😞😞

According to Real Academia Española, the origin of the word Farol is Faro from Pharos, an island near a port in Alexandria where the most famous lighthouse in antiquity was built.

You should make more videos about Filipino and Kapampangan history more often. I'm tired of the generic tagalog-centric textbook crap. P.S. not hating on tagalog culture and people, just the fact that it is encroaching on other Filipino culture. Btw, where did you learn how to write Kulitán? Can't find any good learning materials other than Mr. Pangilinan's book. Hence, I only know Baybayin Tagalog.

If you'll be able to make a series about history of each ethnic group and provinces that would fun to watch.

Wow - this is great history, iho! So proud of you for taking up this mission of educating us about pre-colonial history of our roots. I never learned any of this growing up in the 70s.

There are so many of these in Cambodia. As I've learned, these parols aren't original in the Philippines. These were copied from Buddhists countries like Cambodia. The Star lanterns called Khmer Lanterns are decorated during their Solar New Year usually during April.

I don't think "copy" is the right term, but rather "adapt." As mentioned in the video, these lanterns are made to guide the spirits of the ancestors. Also, keep in mind that the majority of the pre-colonial Filipinos were animists, and only those who are part of the high social class practiced Hindu-Buddhist faith. Therefore, ancestor and spirit worship was already practiced, and only adapted lantern making because they believe its light will lead the way for the spirits.
