I'm decorating my Christmas tree and playing with German compound nouns. It's what we Germans do. Because we can.
The piece of music used in the video is "DReam" by snowflake and royalty free available here:

Well, one word I learned, when I was 11, was "Donaudampfschiffkapitänskajütenabgasröhrchenbeleuchtungssteckdosentechnikeraktenschranktürschloss", and this word is funny, because you can start with "techniker..." after the word ends, again, so this word is, theoreticly, endless. xD

As she mentions, in Swedish we do the exact same thing. And I've always been perplexed by people finding this confusing. It's really much simpler than how it works in english. Why? In English some words are written separately and some are written together, you'll have to learn it by heart. Well, in German and Swedish, if it's one "thing", it's one word. Honey cookie? It's not some honey and a cookie, it's a name for a specific type of cookie, so it becomes honeycookie. Honey cookie decoration? It's not some honey, a cookie and some decoration. It's decoration specifically for you honeycookie. So it becomes honeycookiedecoration. Simple!

This was an awesome video, thanks for sharing it. My dad, German-American, was a linguist and had grown up fluent in German. Up until I was 5 or so, he would speak to me (for the most part) only in German. Unfortunately, in kindergarden, I became upset about something, and started this German/English babble. My teacher was fascinated, and wanted my dad to come in and teach the class, but instead, he stopped teaching me. Makes me sad I can't communicate. German is a beautiful, strong language.

My sister told me that at a Christmas party she went to this year the hosts did what they said was an old German tradition. There was one ornament in the tree that looked like a pickle, and the first person to spot it got to open the first gift, and also received an extra gift. Has anybody else ever heard of this?

There is even a German kids game called 'Ich packe meinen Koffer' (I'm packing my suitcase). You start with the sentence "I'm packing my suitcase with" and then add one word, as simple or as complicated and compunded as you like. Then the next kid has to repeat the sentence and the exact same word AND add an additional word to the compund word at the end which still has to make some kind of sense after the addition. Missing out one of the many compound-words starts the next round.

Often times, it's used to give you a rough idea of an object or concept by words that are already familiar to most speakers. In many cases, you can directly deduce the characteristics and purpose of an object by looking at the words that make it up - if you had an individual word just describing this object and you would hear it for the first time, you would have no starting point to speculate about what it actually is.

Schöner Christbaum :) In the area of southern Germany where I live, we have a fun tradition: Whenever you compliment someone's christmas tree they have to offer you schnapps. The youth made that tradition a game where we visit all of our friends (who live in the same village, so we don't have to drive, obviously) and tell them we like their trees. We call that "Christbaumloben" (complimenting christmas trees). Last year I drank 26 schnapps.

The short approach:DER, DIE and DAS are definite articles (like "the" in english). Which one you use is a matter of the nouns (grammatical) gender. DER is for masculine nouns (like "der Mann"), DIE is for feminine nouns (like "die Frau") and DAS is for neuter nouns (like "das Auto"). Unfortunately a lot of german nouns have a gender, that differs from the acctual sex. The moon e.g. is male (der Mond), but a child is neuter (das Kind). The easiest way to learn is to learn gender and noun together

some example: (eng) lathe - (ger) Drehmaschine it literally means turning machine - the term is also used in english but not commonly. While both people hearing it for the first time don't know exactly what this word describes, the german one actually contains two words that are descriptive: 1. 'maschine' - it is a machine. 2.'dreh-' a prefix that denotes a rotary motion -> a machine that is involved in some kind of rotary motion.

Reminds me of an old Rolf Harris song where each verse provides more detail. In German it would be just one word increasing each time. Last verse has "The fascinating witches who put the scintillating stitches in the britches of the boys who put the powder on the noses on the faces of the ladies of the court of King Caractacus". Look up the song on KZbin.

Its not only german, finnish and swedish who has long words. The longest common word in norwegian is menneskerettighetsorganisasjonene (human rights organizations). You can build it as long you'd like. You can add "office" at the end, so its menneskerettighetsorganisasjonskontoret. And to the end of that you can ad "employee", so it becomes menneskerettighetsorganisasjonskontorsmedarbeider, which means "human rights organization office employee".

We can't make a compound word that is quite as long and cool as yours in Norwegian (or we could, but it would be very difficult to understand if it was the tree, nutt or box you were talking about) The best we kan do is: Skriftfargen på oppevaringsbokslokket til pepperkakejuletredekorasjonsnøttene (writing colour on the storage box lid to the ginger bread christmas tree decoration nuts) And that sounds wierd too :) Merry christmas!

Yeah, in Swedish we have something called "myndighetssvenska" which would translate to bureaucratic Swedish. That is much different to regular Swedish because the language is passive and you often melt words as you described. The use of comma is also restricted and thus, having sentence that stretch over several pages can appear.
