South Africa’s biggest priority for 2024 should be getting the younger players in. There are some fantastic young players over there to name a few Henco Van wyk, Cameron Hanekom, Elrigh Louw, Reinhardt Ludwig, Janko Swanepoel, Quan Horn and Ruan venter to name a few. These players need to be blooded into the squad it’s a must

The Age profile of the SA players has to be a real concern for their prospects in 2027. Much like post 2015 for the abs it feels like the end of a golden generation. All front rowers with the exception of Marx and Nche are likely gone. Mostert will likely fade out. Lood and Etzebeth are regularly injured and old. Snyman also has had massive injuries. The Springboks have always had depth but those guys are titans of the game that wont be easily replaced.
@adrianincapetown70435 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that the Boks' 4 year cycle was only really two years, due to Covid. They only played one warm-up game againt Georgia, between the 2019 World Cup final and the first Lions test.

Great analysis - and Merry Christmas to you. Something to consider. Such is the depth in SA Rugby that you can guarantee that a Bok Superstar for 2027 has not even been noticed yet, far less mentioned. He might be completing his final year at High School, playing for a University Team, or is currently playing at U20 level or for one of the minor provinces, such as Boland or the NW Leopards. But mark my words, a couple of players for the future are not yet on our radar.

😂😂😂 This is South Africa you're talking about. They'll probably have the same team of old codgers.
@neilmontgomery34705 ай бұрын
The Boks do have incredible depth for sure and can rotate more so than other teams. Another factor is the ABs and South Africa come into the World Cup off the back of the Rugby Championship. They are already match fit and combinations and form are already known factors. Friendly warm up games cant really duplicate the intensity of proper test matches.

Given that burnout is a common problem in the Webb Ellis, I'm not sure that the RC actually benefits the Southern Hemisphere sides. I know - having watching a lot of RC - that all teams take their foot off the gas because no one wants an injury on the eve of a world cup!

@@davesmith826 since 1987 the Rugby World Cup has been won by a Southern Hemisphere country - it is well known that England is the only Northern Hemisphere who have won it in 2003 - maybe it does benefit the Southern Hemisphere.
@davesmith8265 ай бұрын
I think the simpler explanation is this: the southern hemisphere produces better rugby players. The head to head records in both tier one and tier two don't lie and while there has definitely been a levelling off in the past six or seven years, that has come at a time when France and Ireland have never played better rugby, Australia has never played worse, and the ABs have lost a generational team. The ABs will take the next Webb Ellis and I expect Oz to return to some semblance of their former self. The onus is on the northern sides to take the crown from them. Given it ain't. @@ZO150ZO

That mindset is wrong. We need to start winning the Championship on a regular basis. We have only won it in 1998 (Tri Nations), 2004 (Tri Nations), 2009 (Tri Nations) and 2019 (the championship). We have won an equal number of Tri Nations/Championship titles than Rugby World Cup titles. That is pathetic and shows that we don't value that competition. Why compete in it at all then?

Im not sure Hanekom is in the mould that the Boks selectors want at number 8. The Bok 8 of recent times is an abrasive ball carrier who is also a menace at the breakdown. Hanekom is good with ball in hand but can he be a defensive lynchpin like Vermulean? The Bok gameplan right now revolves around giving the opposition possession and defending aggresively. It's a miracle we "the Boks', won the world cup this year. Forget all the flares and chaff and brouhaha to distract, and despite the amount of effort and depth that was put in and generated beforehand, the planets needed to align and we needed some luck. We had that, and bad luck as well, with Marx and Bongi to name only 2. The quality of depth in the player base comes in there. Anyone of the top sides could have won RWC2023. I think France were geared so well for this. The pool of death really was the decider for me. Looking at it all after the fact it didnt matter what anyone else did, the hard yards, hurt, lines were drawn in that pool. England, although they ran the Boks very very close, were never going to end up on top of the RWC, Argies disappointingly a poor effort from them overall. I'm sure they will agree., They had a great opportunity in the draw. Then the weather in the last few matches, everyone can argue either way. Anyway,

I caught an excellent break-down of the Boks a month or two back. It compared average squad ages across nations and time. The main take home point was that the team that went to France will be much changed in 2027, with about fifteen players being replaced, more from the pack than from the backs. Age alone isn't the only factor. Miles on the clock and injuries will count many out - Kolbe e.g., or PTSD, who may be at or close to their prime in terms of age in 2027 but have simply played too much rugby to be fit to play weekly tests. I think some change of style of play will be required to manage the transition and I hope to see a more backs-focused game from the Boks in the future. We've got some stellar runners and playmakers plying their trade at provincial level and while it made sense to play a forwards-dominated game with the pack we have had over the past decade, it won't make any sense to continue to do so if we're replacing the likes of Etzebeth, PTSD and De Jager with players who are frankly not good enough. All teams should play to their strengths, whatever they may be, and I see more talent in the back of the park than the front coming through in South African rugby.

There are many young players that can play. The question is will there be enough time to get them enough experience. Props Mchunu, Wilco Louw, Thomas Du Toit, Ox Nche, Neethling Fouche and Matanshima are all still in their twenties. Hookers Johann Grobbelaar and Andre Hugo Venter the son of Andre Venter the blindside Springbok flank. Locks RG Snyman,JD Schickerling, Jason Jenkins, Nortje, Moerat, Van Heerden, Rahl are all still in their twenties. Backrow, Wiese, Venter, Roos, Hanekom, Louw, Horn, Pepsi, Dayimani, Marco Van Staden, and many more are still in their twenties. As for flyhalfs watch Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Midfield, Van Wyk, Hartzenberg, Wings, Zas Fullbacks Green There are so much talent, the question is how do you give them experience before 2027.

I think they should during this 4 years here and there prepare to bring in a new captain under Siya. But im actually thinking they already thought about that and done something about it. It will be good to win rugby championship but Rassie did say in the past that the RWC are the goals. Im not saying they not playing to win but this are used to build depth, see what works and what dont,try different things and build towards the wc. They have alot of depth in the sqaud with young players coming through and who can take over too. Just some who comes to mind are Williams, Moody, Esterhuizen ext. Rassie will forsure be there one more in my view and go for 3 in a row. I think we need one more specialist hooker for now as Bongi and Marx still will be there too. Marx in my opinion the best hooker in the world currently. Fatigued urc players are an issue but good in a sense as they build alot of experience local + international. In a sense that builds depth also for when the time comes. Williams i say must in the future take over from Faf. He is brilliant! Lood de Jager also still to be there, Snyman and JK. A very important area in my view are fullback. We forsure need an extra fullback. Overall happy with how things are looking though. Hope Nienaber joins Rassie in 2026 to lead the Boks again in 2027. 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

Thank you Alfie - very good analysis. However, I think our biggest problem is that there are currently not enough young black players coming through and specifically, at least, 5 leaders. In the current squad, stars like Siya, Bongi, Trevor, Ox, Marvin, Mapimpi, Am, etc. have been groomed over a long period of time. We desperately need more traction in the rural areas. (Remember, soccer is our national sport and so much easier to play where no facilities exist.) We simply don't have the money or the scouting staff to "mine" our rural areas. In addition, we can't simply take youngsters with potential and place them in "rugby schools" in cities away from their families. To protect and develop the game we love so much, we need to develop the game in our rural areas and for that, we need the help of Europe. (Funding, administration, coaching, etc.) I don't think Nieu Zealand, the Aussies and Argentina have the resources to assist on a sustainable basis. In short, I think the rugby world would be much poorer without the Boks and without concerted and structured assistance from Europe, we will be just some insignificant rugby playing nation in the next 20 years. Again, thank you for your analysis and I fully understand that your comments are focusing on "squad level" and not the management and structure of rugby in South Africa.

Position wise for me Hooker, Lock, Centre combinations and Fullback are concerns for depth. Think Marx will be in the mix. Think we'll see new options blooded and Dewbe will be in the mix, but the fact he was not called up speaks volumes. For Lock, reckon Eben moves to the bench. Mostert wasn't even first choice until injuries, so think this is where the most opportunity for young player's coming through will be. From a leadership perspective, i think Siya and Eben will still be active, but will move to the bomb squad more often to extend careers, meaning Siya possibly takes a vice captain role handing over the reigns to Handre, Marx and Am. Have doubts Siya will be there in 4 years (a lot of competition), but will be happy if he makes it. I'm concerned about 12, 13 and 15. The 12 & 13 combination can make or break your campaign. And at 15 think Le Roux was the better operator before WC. Willemse really lifted at the WC, but still prefer seeing him play at 12 where he really shines. So think we lack a pure 15. Where we also lack depth is in the kicking department. Missed a lot of drop kick attempts in the final. And are missing a long range kicker.

In recent times the South African forward pack usually dominate when they field a powerful hooker. John Smit was there as captain but I am thinking more in the line of a Bismarck du Plessis or Malcolm Marx. Apart from scrummaging they were/are a tremendous thorn in the opposition's side at the breakdown. Both du Plessis and Marx are players with God given natural strength deep rooted in their DNA. Marx is still only 29 so I don't see him going anywhere soon but there must be boys coming through in SA similar in physical ability. I go out to South Africa regularly an attend the local school rugby games. The school in question is not a major rugby school but if you were to see the facilities, four secondary pitches and a main pitch with spectator stand and a fully equipped gym/weight room that most UK clubs can only dream of, and a desire of just about every boy at the school to play rugby, I am not overly worried about the Boks. I am more worried about the country. If it goes down and there is no longer a Springbok team, per se, what a tragedy that would be.

Give Kolisi one more WC, by that time enough payers of color should have come through the system to find our next "Kolisi". We need a strong leader of color in the Springbok team to help pull everyone together and support a national team. It's just reality and the way it is here in SA. After this last WC we had more support from black fans than ever before so we have to embrace that and build on that. One day black supporters will not bother if we have a white or black captain, they will support the Boks whole heartedly. Traditionally black people thought of rugby as a white man sport so they would not support it, but it is slowly turning with more good players of color being represented in the Bok team. Years ago we had a matter of needing to play under performing "quota players" in the Bok team just to make it look more representative but that is not the case anymore, there are so many very good black payers coming through our system. This is just my take on how Rugby SA is going forward
