Here in the USA, zoos and aquariums sometimes house animals that could not be released back into the wild. For example, marine mammals (seals, sea lions, dolphins, manatees, etc.) that are injured or orphaned in the wild may end up in zoos and aquariums. Similarly, bears that repeatedly come into conflict with people are usually killed by government agencies, but some are instead live-trapped and placed at zoos.

I’ve seen a similar thing in Europe. Pairi Daiza had and maybe still do have a huge exhibit housing “confiscated” animals seized at ports and unable to be returned to the wild. Was a really interesting mix of species, a great educational asset, and as you’ve stated in your example, a great way to house species which otherwise may have nowhere to go!

One of the zoos on the Isle of Wight had a red fox who was injured in the wild, though I couldn't see it when I went. It was my favourite zoo experience I've ever had because of how much I learned about their big cats from the tour guide.
