Nature nerd Ann Jones takes a look at crocodile scenes in Hollywood movies and breaks down how accurate they really are.
Just how realistic is Mick's crocodile fight in 'Crocodile Dundee'? Or the huge crocodile Betty White feds in 'Lake Placid'? Is the giant man-eating crocodile in 'Rogue' even plausible?

In terms of noises, the saltwater crocodile’s DO make a lot of hissing; and throat rumbling noises. This is generally done by territorial males that are showcasing their dominance; and isn’t done when they are seeking out their meal. When stalking and attacking prey, they are deadly silent. Regarding the boat incident, the boat in the clip shown while you were talking about the croc not being able to flip a tourist boat- was a dingy; while there IS a tourist boat in the movie that also gets sunken. Two different boats. Regarding weather a crocodile could flip a boat is a controversial one- because a crocodile of the size IN the movie, could absolutely flip a dingi- which would be smaller in length and width than that beast. Average sized saltwater crocodiles in Aus have been known to jump into boats / take out their engines as well. It’s not a stretch for one of that size to flip a boat. Maybe not the larger tourist boat, but the dingi definitely !

I agree on the not vocalizing on attacks: They are an AMBUSH predator, after all, so why waste the energy, right before you attack?
@suchnothing
@suchnothing 14 күн бұрын
Yeah I think they mostly vocalize to find mates or establish their territory. I've watched a lot of videos of crocs being fed, or wildlife documentaries of them hunting, and I don't remember hearing them vocalize. Although there's usually a lot of splashing and whatnot, so maybe it just get's drowned out. But I think it's just classic hollywood embellishment.

Loved Lake Placid. One of my faves with crocs, mainly for the characters. I thought they were all fun characters and were really distinct from each other. Thought there was a lot of chemestry between them all. To my knowledge, crocs don't stop growing. They grow throughout their entire lives, and I don't recall there being a "maximum" length. I have seen documentiation and video of saltwater crocs in excess of 20 feet. I don't think it would be outside the realm of posibilities for one to reach 30. The one in that second set of clips eating tourists sure looked like it was the same size as the one in Lake Placid. For food, with regards to Lake Placid. There were lots of fish, and let's not forget in that film Betty White's character (Spoilers) was feeding the crocs. They were getting lots of food.

I kind of know what I'm talking about, croc territory 100 yards from my house. Lake placid . . . . . no. Lake Placid is actually a great movie. They do try to cover why there is a croc there, and while it is not the best justification, they do try to cover it, and the movie is overall well written and acted... even the justification for why he is in the water with the croc is covered, basically, they justify it by saying he is crazy... but they do point out that is not how you study crocs... for long... so yea, Lake Placid i think she should watch it and give it a try only because the dry sense of humor is pretty darn funny...

Believe it, or not, it is engineered, sort of. You see, Mother Nature and her workings isn't just a blind force, not a "blind sculptor", so to speak. Everything has it's place and function, whether it is a cell, an organism, or a species, as a whole. That's the way it is.

@@akirayonomori3854 Well, no, "mother nature" relies on random changes, the ones more suitable for the environment will have a higher survival rate and thus be more likely to be passed on further. It is simple trial by error, one cannot call that engineering.

@@macaalf8219 I would say trial and error is an important part of engineering. You build something, see if it works, and whether it does or doesn't, you build off the failures and flaws, improving your design. It's not the only part but yes, I would count it as engineering. You could call that a type of evolution, so to speak.

In Australia typical dog breeds (exclusive of dingos) are imported and so the natural wildlife (such as snakes, spiders and crocodiles) pose a significant risk to the dogs, also the dogs pose a biosecurity risk and danger to the behaviour of the natural animals that are already there in that habitat. In 2001 all state governments through instruction from the Department of Environment and Water passed laws so that only properly restrained service animals can enter the reserves.

1. There are plenty of documentaries with divers swimming with crocs and alligators. 2. Crocs and alligators can flip boats maybe no throw them 10 feet in the air but if you look hard enough there are plenty of people who were in a boat or eyewitnesses of crocs at the very least flipping boats. I learned this from watching river monsters with jeremy wade almost every episode he does in the nile talking to local tribes and they say these things. Also idk why this is so hard for people to believe. 3. Just saying guys spending a little time on google looking at news articles and stuff from around the world would go a long way. 4. If i remember correctly the croc in lake placid is about 30 feet. Im not even gonna defend this just go to google. There are literally like 5 documentaries about 30 foot crocs or almost 30 feet. So for you to say this is impossible or whatever is just factually wrong. If i remember correctly there was a 29 or 30 foot croc in a zoo in india or somewhere in that area of the world till it died. Again taking 5 min time to go on google would have told you all of this.

it's pretty bad legal advice to say "Don't kill a crocodile they're protected" when that crocodile is predating you. Self-defence is a reasonable excuse for committing murder or wildlife crimes even if you're a vegan. Your own life should be more important than the life of something that is currently trying to hunt you. The correct advice would be "don't fill your canteen in a known crocodile habitat".
