Stephen Curry is a two-time MVP, three-time NBA champion, and has revolutionized an entire generation of basketball. But where does he rank all time? HBO and The Ringer’s Bill Simmons makes a case for why Curry is a top-25 player in the history of the NBA and details why he has been so important to the history of the league.

There have obviously been many greats! Players who stood out even on an NBA court as being THAT DUDE! But there have been very few players who have literally changed the way the game is played. People still see a slender baby-faced light skin nice guy who doesn't dunk or overpower people - and they just don't want to put him in that KILLER category: that category of players who just wanted to eat your heart out, and did it! But, not to mention the fact that that narrative is just wrong because Curry is extremely competitive, but eating somebody's heart out with a smile is just as cold-blooded to me! AND he's had the success to back it up, it's not like he's a James Harden where he's extremely talented but hasn't had the success, Curry literally changed the way the game is played and it worked immensely for his team. He changed the mathmatics of the game to where you CAN'T win today UNLESS you play like Steph and those Warriors teams! How people still don't rank him higher is just beyond me. It's just because he is all of those "soft" adjectives i listed above. Edit: i think even the nba commissioner would block any trade involving Steph Curry. I can't ever see him playing for any other team. Ever. I can't see it

@@Tonyoung55 Klay Thompson is an exceptional shooter, no doubt. Also one of the best shooters ever just like Steph! I think we both agree on that. I am not saying that their team's success was all solely because of Steph Curry. I am saying however that Steph Curry changed the game! If Steph Curry was playing with anyone else, I believe his effect on the game would have been the same. He was that dude at Davidson! Now do I think his affect was even more pronounced because he had another all-time great shooter on this team, absolutely! So they, along with a few others from those Warriors squads oh, they all deserve credit for the team success. But if you are telling me that Steph Curry wasn't by far the most influential and important, and thus the most responsible for the effect that that team had on the league, then that's just not wanting to give him all of the credit he's due. Michael Jordan played with another top 50 player of all time! Does that mean that Michael Jordan didn't change the way the game is played? Does that diminish the effect that Michael Jordan had on the league? And is it disrespectful to Scottie Pippen to admit Michael Jordan's impact? Absolutely not! I don't understand why people consider evaluations and praise to be a zero-sum game! Giving one person the credit that they're due does not take away from other people's shine. But under the guise of fairness, spreading one person's accomplishments across the team is ironically not being fair. It's not an accurate reflection of reality.

I might be the only player who does my all-time list this way, but I rank guys based on position. The league has had so many different eras with so many different players with different skill sets. So it's hard for me to really rank a PG ahead of a center or a SF ahead of a SG. I find it easier to do it the way I do it. So I usually rank my all-time list using this question: "If I had an all-time starting five and bench five, who'd be on that team?" As it pertains to Steph, he'd be my backup PG.

...nor should Duncan be top 5 nor Curry top 10. There are too many greats. The older you get, the more you appreciate this. It's not a knock on either of them. There are just sooooooo many amazing players in history. I believe that if there was more video on Wilt, he would be a unanimous best player. He averaged 50 points for a season!!!!! He averaged over 27 rebounds for a season!!!!! Wilt has 118 50 point games, most all time. Jordan is next with a "mere" 31, just barely over 1/4 of what Wilt did. Curry. whose calling card is certainly scoring and not d has only 6. Wilt has 2 less than 20x the 50pt games as Curry. Curry, for all his greatness, is no Wilt nor Jordan, nor LBJ. I started following the nba in the early 80s. Jordan is the best I've seen, but Wilt kills him in stats. If Bird didn't have a bad back, I think he and LBJ would be neck and neck. Peak Bird was every bit as good as peak LBJ. LBJ's peak is just waaaaaay longer. Curry, while the better shooter, is not the player Bird was, nor Kareem. He's the 3rd best of his generation, behind LBJ and K.D. And neither of them compare to Kareem in my eyes. And Curry is not on any of their levels. He's not a good defender. In what world is that not a serious knock? It's half the game!!!!!!!

Ben Simmons? 6’10 point guard actually sometimes guarded by other point guards? Post the fuck up!) I can even forgive not seeming to realize that 3 points is worth more than 2. Because still better than even a 50% 3 point shooter statistically in terms of efficiency is a dunk or lay up. One thing I’ve never understood, not at the time and not now. This era of post 3 point line 20 foot jump shots and 20 foot jump shot artists. I used to watch these wings or power forwards who specialized in the 20 footer and think, “just step back a few feet.” I mean is a 23 footer so much harder than a 20 footer that it’s not worth the extra point? Of course not. I even used to watch Ewing and think he needs to cut out that 20 foot jumper. Either post up or start practicing that 20 footer from 23 feet and then you can post up and shoot 3s. It was always so dumb...

He is a sure fire 1st ballet HOF if he stopped playing Today. My biggest problem with Steph is that I don't know and I don't think he would have been near as dominant or impactful if he played in lets say the much more physical and defensive oriented era of the mid to late 90's-mid 2000's, nor in the era where they had no 3 point line (70's, 60's) I think he would have been great in the 80's era where the pace of the game is similar to today's era and they had the 3 point shot.

I think a mid 90's era Phil Jackson and the Triangle could have made a four-peat team with Curry, Green and Klay. Steph is the perimeter shooting version of Shaq's offense in the paint in the early 2000s.
@shamancolin
@shamancolin 3 жыл бұрын
The triangle doesn't maximize 3 point shooting like pace, space, and constant motion. It would marginalize Steph's skill set and Thompson's to a degree, though not his defense. Also, if you could hand check and play physical like you could in the 90s, Steph would be getting his ass kicked a lot. Steph is built for the modern game. The Triangle is not.

@@wiz_dropbomb2134 You're clueless and you should do as you advise. All talk, no substance. Draymond, Iggy and Klay have masked Steph's "D" deficiencies. He can steal, etc. and play the proper position within the defensive scheme, that's not the issue. He can get bullied by bigger guards. GSW switching defense tries to get Steph off more physically dominant players. Their defense tries to mask his deficiencies in this way. It happens all the time. Kemba, Trae young, etc. have this happen on D too, just to name a few. But with bigger guards like Smart, Holiday, Klay etc, its not an issue. (Go figure Boston pairs J.B. or Smart with Walker just like GSW pairs Thompson with Steph. It's a great pairing to hide small guard defensive deficiencies) Basketball is still somewhat of a physical game. Size still matters to a degree. If you respond I'll know class is in session again and prepare another lesson for you. You'll probably need to do extra credit not to fail. And with a pedestrian 2.0 to 1 assist to turnover ratio to boot. He's typical of his narcissistic gen though in that he's playing a position where he's _supposed_ to set his teammates up yet spends all of his time taking shots for himself. If Dame is ever going to leave Portland, he should come home. He's too good right now to have Jordan Poole's spot but perhaps after his current contract. I think he means guys who put up an insane amount of points quickly on a few shots. That wasn't really Pierce and not really Bird either. Bird could shoot with anyone but he didn't take many threes and his scoring was steady. He could light you up but he usually played within the offense while Curry and Pistol Pete shoot from deep, start taking a bunch of shots, get hot, score in bursts. That wasn't Bird's game, though he was more than capable of it if he had wanted to. Bird, Jordan, LeBron, they are more like consistent steady scorers while a "heat check" guy like Bill refers to is a guy who just gets hot and starts scoring in bunches over a short amount of time, often taking insane shots. That's at least what I get from years listening to Bill and how he refers to heat check guys.

Curry is no Jordan. Jordan was repeatedly a 1st team all defender and the best offensive player in the league. Curry's defensive liabilities completely preclude him from #1. How many finals MVPs does Curry Have? Zippo. Jordan won 6 titles and won 6 finals MVPs. He also 3-peated twice! Warriors have not 3-peated even once. Kevin Durant was the best Warrior for 2 of the Warriors 3 titles. Why? Well, 2x finals MVP, but also K.D. is a good defender. Which, you know, is like half the freaking game. Curry's not even the best offensive player either. Go look up Wilt Chamberlain's stats. He AVERAGED 50 ppg for an entire season. Wilt literally owns more than 1/2 of all offensive records. And for someone old enough to have watched Bird and Magic, Jordan is the best offensive player I've seen. And even Jordan can't compare to Wilts stats. Also, do you really think Curry could win titles wherever he goes? I don't. But LBJ can. Curry changed the game, which is huge. But let's not exaggerate: He is merely the 3rd best player of his generation, behind LBJ and K.D. And that's something to be proud of for someone his size.
