I sort of respect how cartoonishly evil this all is. Fast fashion was already using child labour, killing workers in garment factory fires, destroying ecosystems with wastewater, and finally burning the clothes if they don't sell before the next mini-trend pops up the next month. Now the industry is focusing on the little details of being evil like maximizing the amount of microplastics.

A big issue with polyester is that the fabric breaks down so much quicker than natural fabrics. It's very weak compared to them and the it's even worse with recycled polyester. Recycled polyester is super weak and makes very short life spanned clothing. (Edit: To clarify, the fibers are made out of molecule chains, which themselves are very strong, but the fibres are not, so they break up easily, creating the microplastics that last in nature forever.) And yes there's clothing that needs to have plastic fabrics, but I do really think we should limit them only at those where it's necessary. For many sports you definitely do need technical fabrics made from plastic, but I think those are best limited at sports. Many natural fabrics have much better qualities for casual use (like linen is also very good at wicking moisture, but also has pretty high ability to retain water without feeling wet (the water goes into fibres so it's not between them inside the fabric, it's anti-bacterial and so much stronger and long-lasting than polyester), are more long lasting and more sustainable to produce. Also most natural fabrics have anti-bacterial properties (some more than others), excluding cotton and processed cellulose, like tencel. Edit: Hemp is actually very inexpensive to farm compared to basically any other plant fiber, especially cotton, which the most used natural fiber. It's also very good for the land, it doesn't need any fertilizers or pestilence, and it in fact fertilizes the land, so it could be used to fertilize land damaged by over-fertilizing and monoculture. It has good land to fiber ratio too. What makes growing it expensive is the war on drugs. Hemp was previously very common fabric until the war on drugs made growing hemp legally tricky, even though the hemp types used for textiles don't produce the drug. In most countries now growing hemp for fabrics need special permits etc., which forces the farmers jump through hoops and makes the process expensive. Hemp has all the same amazing properties linen has but is even stronger and more long lasting (but it's not as soft as linen).
@catis4 Жыл бұрын
I think the main problem with polyester is not the fact that it breaks down quickly, but that it takes longer to break down and during that process it releases microplastics.
@karoliinalehtinen6701 Жыл бұрын
@@catis4 You're not entirely wrong. Molecule chains that make up the fibers are very strong and last forever in nature, but the fibers themselves are weak. So the fibers break down, which creates the small microplastics, and in longer term, nanoplastics, so the fabric itself doesn't last long and produces very easily a lot of microplastics which do last for ridiculous lengths of time. Natural fabrics are generally speaking the opposite (though the strength of their fibres varies a lot), their fibers are pretty strong, but the molecule chains that make them up decay quickly, when decomposers get to them.

As someone trying to get back into bicycling after many years away (and desperately trying to avoid buying either neon lycra or something that makes me look like a wannabe Kardashian), I really wish there was a store called something like "stop cycling in jeans, dingus" where people could buy sane-looking clothes that aren't meant to be sexy OR rave-ready. I am middle-aged, pudgy, on the asexual spectrum, and trying to manage a hereditary cardiovascular condition. I just want to ride my bike through the park without feeling like people are staring at my neon yellow ass.
@vaska00762 Жыл бұрын
What sort of bicycle are you riding? I hate to be that person who is prescriptive around cycling clothing, but there are different types of clothing around for road, mountain bike and I guess in-between. I ride a road bike and I wear bib shorts or tights, which are shorts or tights with straps that go over your shoulders. They're commonly available in black, but other colours like navy blue are common too. Jerseys (a thin zip up top) are supposed to be skin tight, and yes... they can be a bit uh... form revealing, but I've actually come to like it. Mountain bikers get all sorts of different clothing, which is more about keeping the dirt off, and gravel riding is somewhere in-between the aerodynamic focused road clothing and all weather MTB jackets and trousers. The only neon coloured cycling clothes I have is a rain jacket that's hi-vis yellow for being seen in bad lighting conditions. I think that's reasonable. I'll tell you what I don't like though, and that's just how compressive sports bras are. They're certainly comfortable, but they're meant more for runners, and I just want something that'll just be more tolerant to me sweating a bunch, while still being... uh less compressive. They're a pain to get off when you're still covered in sweat.

Personally, I'm a big fan Icebreaker for essentially all my outdoor & workout clothes. I also cycle (mostly gravel/road), and find that on all but the hottest days I actually prefer wearing wool to the poly/lycra stuff that most cycling kit is made from. The extra-lightweight stuff does a great job of body temperature regulation in warmer weather, and since I live in a pretty cold climate I really like having a few layers of thicker stuff that I can peel on and off as I go depending on how active I am, how cold it gets, how windy it gets, etc.. Not to mention, wool is anti-microbial and doesn't stink up nearly as bad as lycra. And you can get wool blend stuff, which has a little stretch while being pretty minimally plastic. I still wear shammies and strongly suggest them for comfort, and as far as I'm aware I've never seen non-lycra ones. But it's not hard to put on a pair of shorts or leggings over them, and then wear something like a wool t-shirt over the top rather than a tight-fitting jersey.

I can think of lots of reasons. Starting about ten years ago, Nike and others managed to create situations where they might be making shoes for $20/pair and selling for $500 because it's a "limited release colorway", and Adidas was similarly printing money with their collaboration brand Yeezy, and these showed that profit margins can be orders of magnitude higher than what was previously thought. Garment production issues like clothes moth/garment beetle infestations are a bit less likely when there's more plastic in the clothes. Active wear didn't have a downturn like professional workwear during COVID. It works well in a marketing world where still photos of models have been replaced by influencer marketers moving on video, and the traditional marketing means of paying sports teams to wear your logo on their chests haven't lost popularity the same way things like fashion weeks have. Active wear is generally a good choice for the warm climates of current major growing markets, like China and India. The clothes are basically unrepairable and require replacing more often than most clothing, which are traits valued higher than ever before for manufacturers.

Pop culture also has some influence on this: pop artists from different kinds of music, but usually hiphop, trap and whatever is what Billie Eilish plays adopted a more sports wear fashion style. Also, fashion trends repeat themselves every 20 years or so and in the early 90s baggy and oversized clothes were a trend, also. Have a look at rap and basketball fans culture, also football (as in association football) kits and supporters from the 90s. As for used clothes, it's hard to find used clothes and shoes on my size (I'm too small) and when I find it is not of my taste or is already completely trashed. Cheers!

This is all speculation, and I don’t even use social media that often but I feel like the “off duty model” culture and being healthy in general has become like a trend ? So activewear caters to those trends as a way of showing off your body and looking as if you are trying to be healthier and look skinnier or appear to be attempting to work out even if you’re not actually being healthier. Does that make sense? Maybe I’m just insecure and my algorithm is pushing that for me but that’s what I think. Activewear = sense of healthiness which has been trendy for awhile as more people start to care about their health (think about how like green juice suddenly became a craze like years ago that never went away).

It's because technical fabrics (i.e. fabrics with technical qualities such as sweat wicking, temperature control, stretch etc.) are created in synthetic fibres. Cotton is not moisture wicking at all, and when I've worked out in cotton t-shirts, I get very warm and uncomfortable as it just absorbs all of the sweat. A natural fibre that is better is bamboo, which is more breathable but mostly it's synthetic fibres that are literally designed for working out. It's unfortunate that they shed microplastics but look at specialised clothing anywhere and you will find synthetic technical fabrics for skiing, swimming, hiking etc.

I’m of the opinion that one of the best things you can do for sustainable fashion (short of buying second hand), is buying things that are decent quality that will last a long time. Now in this fast fashion world, that is VERY difficult. That’s one of the reasons I shop on Amazon, most of it is garbage but I read reviews thoroughly and have found good quality things for cheap. I think there’s also such a big push to own A Lot Of Clothes because it’s the norm and being an “outfit repeater” is somewhat taboo. Working class people owning a lot of clothes is fairly new. In the 40s for example, working class people had like 3 well made outfits. Which doesn’t leave a lot of room for self expression, but is a lot more sustainable than buying hundreds of bad quality items and quickly tossing them when they start to fall apart

I work at a secondhand clothing store during breaks off school, and it’s crazy how rapidly the athletic section has expanded over the past two years alone. It’s been kinda nice, I’ve gotten some rlly nice things for a good price with my employee discount but the one thing I can’t get over is how god damn small lululemon is. It’s nice stuff, really pretty and good quality, but holy crap. I’m a size zero normally, but the lululemon jacket I got is a size 6 and it’s verrrrry snug. I don’t even know what the point is. (Not to mention how annoying it is to figure out the size when they’re used cause they’re tags are so annoying and long so people always clip them off so we usually just have to guess. I mean sometimes in the bottoms there will be a sticker in the teeny pocket bht with the tops you really just have to guess.)
@binaryrainbows Жыл бұрын
You may have an outlier item or something made for another market - generally lululemon never fits that small (I'm 6'1 and 220lbs and I wear a size 10/12 at lll and a pretty consistent 12 elsewhere) and have only ever sized up in a couple items because I am also obviously... quite tall. There is however 'asia fit' which is scaled much differently to the NA fit, or potentially a counterfeit. I was literally able to wear my size 12 leggings when I was a size 20!

Lululemon for men is the opposite problem 😂 I’m an XL in all other brands (mostly due to my shoulders) but a medium at Lululemon. Like are the men who shop here all on steroids lol 😂

a great part of this trend are the few (mostly influencer) brands ive come across that made it their mission to make size inclusive/plus size active wear. they usually also use corresponding models to market it, and are generally anti beauty standards and pro comfort at every size, aiming to promote being active and healthy in your own way rather than push diet culture. edit: just saw that you mention it too :)
@catis4 Жыл бұрын
I don't really like active wear, so I didn't even noticed that there were more brands. But there are so many brands of everything that seeing a lot of active wear brands doesn't seem odd to me. Just like when seeing a lot of makeup brands I've never heard before. BUT... I am tired of seeing the same type of skintight leggings/shorts and sports bra sets. My fat rolls don't like those type of clothing.

Yes, thank you Tara! I am trying to swear off H&M and other fast fashion brands for good, but couple of months ago I was tempted to get a two-piece turquoise workout set, as it was in my best colour and it looked quite flattering on me! But even in the store I felt so hot in them, and when I read the reviews, almost all of them highlighted that the material was too thick for their taste. I get hot soo easily so breezy layers instead of a single thick one are super important for me. I eventually had to admit to myself that even though I looked good in it and the price was way better than for the same thing in Decathlon, I would not use the set, as I would not feel comfortable enough when using it for its intended purpose. Cooldown is so important, and so is reading the reviews.

I honestly did not know at all that activewear was a trend (I am extremely out of the loop) but this explains why so many of the people at my college are always wearing activewear sets! Thank you for the video, I am now slightly less confused

It's so difficult finding good active wear that isn't made with child labour or from "virgin plastic". Also majority of the plastic leggins I have tried on at stores are unflattering and are SHEER. If I want to show of my underwear I would only walk in them. I just want non sheer basic black leggings made from recycled materials and the workers actually get paid enough for making them, is that really too much to ask for? 😭
@vaska00762 Жыл бұрын
If I didn't know any better, I'd guess those sorts of leggings are intended to be worn without underwear 🤢 It's surprising how much of fashion is made around male gaze.

Something about bamboo : bamboo fibers have antimicrobial properties, yes. But the fibers are way too coarse to make clothes, the “bamboo fibers” that are soft enough to make fabric are bamboo viscose/rayon fibers. And they don’t have the antimicrobial properties anymore then.

As someone who can't wear most synthetic (plastic based) fibres due to sensory issues (as well as wanting to go for more sustainable options) I struggle to find active wear. I managed to find some amazing bamboo leggings at the clothing section of my supermarket (??? So random) and I've been hoping they introduce some summer options (I'm in the southern hemisphere) but nope, everything, even from brand names, is super thick plastic, you just get to choose from shiny plastic and textured "sweat wicking" plastic. It's super frustrating

All consumption has an impact on the Earth and requires resources, but all consumption is not equal. It seems to be important to highlight that just because all consumption is bad, it doesn't mean you might as well give up and buy whatever/the cheapest for you in the moment. Every day, from just living, eating, and drinking, we consume the equivalent of a credit card of plastic, because of the vast amount of microplastics in nature, so there is every reason to think twice about buying clothes with polyester and other plastics. It might not consume less resources to buy an alternative in wool, hemp, or linen, but you will not add microplastics to our drinking water and food sources every time you wash your clothes, and the production will most likely introduce less new carbon into the world (pumping up oil vs releasing carbon from trees and bushes already in the system).

Polyester clothing and fibers ARE recyclable... With a significant energy reduction over new.
@Caitlin_TheGreat Жыл бұрын
There is no ethical consumption, of course. Even so, I've been doing my best to get away from synthetic textiles. Cotton, Wool, and Linen all have their issues environmentally (and hopefully the sheep are treated well for the wool), but I just don't think it's nearly as bad as polyester and acrylic and viscose among others. Plus the natural fibers just feel better and generally perform better and are less flammable / melty. I suppose we could all try going nudist but there are a ton of issues with that -- especially if you need protection from the damaging rays of the sun or the bitter cold of winter or just rain and wind. Or want pockets. Plus, it seems not particularly safe for most of us to go around without clothing with some of the sorts of folks out there. Anyway, I have been finding that natural fibers are a bit longer-lasting, provided the garment itself was crafted with some degree of quality. The "activewear" clothing I had from the 2000's and 2010's has mostly made its way out of my wardrobe and I'm totally fine with that. A few polyester basketball shorts remain, and I think there's still one or two very plastic-feeling polyester "quick dry" shirts in my dresser from when I worked retail stocking. I hope to never need those again. All the rest has been disposed of as it just didn't last very long.

I was rewatching and was thinking about that running tights I wear for 10 years now and I was thinking: huh, I really don’t need to buy new stuff. I am playing volleyball and sometimes if I play with long tights I’m ripping them. I thought I should wear shorts even if I don’t feel comfortable so I don’t have to throw the ripped tights out. With sports ware it somehow seems that you need new stuff even more (because of the sweat?) This video is also motivating me for buying sustainable next time. I found the antibiotic properties especially interesting!!! Thank you so much Tara for the information and input 😊❤️❤️❤️❤️

I've always had anxiety around working out in public or in a gym, so I've always worked out at home. I went from working out in full activewear all the way down to just my sports bra and underwear lmao. As my workouts intensified, I recalled having less clothing on due to sweating so much and being uncomfortable with the heat and texture of my activewear (even with 2 fans on in my room). Honestly, I don't use social media often, but I do see the constant advertisment of activewear when I do. I think I'd only buy some activewear for the look but not for the actual workouts for me.

I work out in tac pants I bought last year, random thrifted tank tops and combat boots lol (or garage is cold, as are my ankles). They're solid polyester, but I've worn them almost* daily since September of last year and the only sign of wear they show is that they're fading, which I can easily fix whenever I get round to getting synthetic Rit dye to dye my cheap soundproofing.
