Freddy Adu impact on his generation is immense. Millions and millions have achieved great success in Championship Manager thanks to him. Believe it or not, this game was so popular back then that most of the hype who ended up ruining his career came from the Wonderkid insane ratings he had at age 14 in the game. Literally the entire world of football knew about him as the game came out and this is where everything started. I firmly believe that without the game his popularity would be minor and he would have had much more time to develop.

Growing up in the states with an immigrant back ground and a family that loved futbol, (which people made fun of me for). I don’t think people abroad understand how crazy the hype was for Adu in the late 90s. The commercials the interviews it was on mother level. Makes me think sometimes what would have happened if he did turn out to be successful. Thankfully nowadays futbol here in the states has what I call the Adu effect. People still hype up young talented players but the asterisk “remember Freddy Adu” is always attached which tampers expectations.

Footballing people need to stop this ridiculous thing in calling young players the next Pele, Messi, Ronaldo ete etc. This puts HUGE pressure on these boys, Adu didn't need this. He should have been allowed to develop as a human and as a footballer. Putting him up as the saviour of American football also was wrong. Bouncing from club to club didn't help either, maybe if the Man U trial worked out and working under Sir Alex that might have made him as a man and as a foootballer.

To be fair, it's the American marketers who put pressure on kids. In Europe, young players are protected from this kind of attention. European clubs are allowed to buy young players which gives them time to mentally and technically improve while completing their education. In the US, minors can't pursue a contract into a youth academy and so not only fall behind the rest of European clubs in cultivating talent, but they aren't sheltered from the pressure of being marketed as "the next Pele"

You only had to look at his ace in order to see why he never made it as pro... The problem with adu is the same with many players from africa: his alledged age is way bellow his real age. People have to keep in mind that we are talking about the 3rd world and warzones. I'm from portugal and we have a lot of african players because of our ex colonies. When i used to play football, i met several of those cases (it was frequent to face opponents with full thick beards when i was 13 or 14. you could cleraly see they were adults and not children but their officisl documents would say otherwise). Most of our ex colonies were at war until very recentlly and in many cases their original documentation and birth records had been destroyed, which meant that when arriving in portugal they could claim to be whoever they wanted and they could cheat on their age. It makes a big difference in youth teams, having to play against a grown up man but that difference and advantage dissipates when everybody on the pitch is an adult. Thta's why he never made it in pro football. I remeber that when he was at benfica and got injured, the surgeon who operated on him said he had the bone structure and joints of a 30 year old man, even though he was 18 or 19 at the time (he had the bone structure of a 30 year old man because that was his real age...)

I solved the puzzle look :D :f Adu was indeed 14 when he made his MLS debut in 2004 (and became the youngest pro athlete in a U.S. team sport in more than a century), he would hit a major growth spurt in his midteens. And if he was that good as a true 14-year-old, his natural arc of improvement in his late teens would propel him into the elite of global soccer. Neither happened. A Sports Illustrated story from 2003, when Adu was 13, says he was 5-feet-8, 140 pounds. His current size at age 20 as listed on U.S. Soccer’s Web site: 5-8, 140. yeah right 7 years later he didnt grow 1 inch or anything is impossible if messi grow and he had a disease the guy is a fraud made millions because he and his mother decided to change his age. also I look now at the pictures when he was 14 he looks 21 to me explains why he didnt grow lol

Not an issue of being pushed forward too soon. Was an issue of a fairly small sized player who didn’t get the right coach to push him to lift and train to maximize his frame. Very simple

How many 14 year olds living under the same circumstances as Freddy would not have seized the opportunity to help his family? I commend him for making the best decision he could at that time. I think it's safe to say that some older players, coaches, and ect were jealous of his quick rise to stardom and may have made it their business to not assist with his development.

In FM at the time of his move to Benfica he was one of the best wonderkids...but in real life he didn't have the mental structure to be a profissional.It's a perfect example of wrong choices when having everything to be star,not all his fault,he was fed to much greatness at young age and skiped alot of steps of becoming professional,mentally he just couldn't cope with it.A shame...
@ballakick90803 жыл бұрын
He's not even a wonderkid they tag with that name! the dude just wanna play to help him parent and the, the media take turn in into some elses they put all this expectation on him .. its crazy

Did he retire? If I was him I'd try going to the Indian super league, middle east or Asia. He might be given a chance more over there, than in Europe

The people who thought this kid was God's precious gift to America's football ( soccer,) must have never seen a game before. His mother, a marketing agent, never marketed another athlete. (name them if I am wrong please.) Simply putting it, Freddy Sdu was the counterfeit product of a telemarketer.

Teams jumped on the bandwagon acting like he wasn't good enough. I saw him play several times and he was as good as the other players. What happened to him was unfair.

such a sad story, but i also cant help but think coach : you are fired. Adu : the coach fired me because the president forced him. coach : no me and the president agree we wanted to fire you because you are a joke. damn thats really hard, hopefully he got enough money to live the rest of his life without need of work.

He did good, made some money, travelled the world. Most never get this far. Most never play after age 18. He’s playing pro at age 16. Only one in a 100 million become a super star. He should have stayed in the USA and one team instead of going Europe. So now he can coach which is a great career too. Key is to be happy in what you do, content, always play at teams where you are above there level, save money and invest in real estate, don’t waste money. 2 million wp years ago is enough to live on forever if careful.

Bro your videos are great but you do over emphasize goals a little, Freddy Adu was not a forward expected to score goals. you used goals to measure his performance as a teenager and 8/29 as Terrible in his best scoring season.
