Kareem inspired me to become a skateboarder from age 11 to 18. And if I ever met him I will ask him were you ever bullied or teased for being a black man on a skateboard for supposedly doing a white sport

i really think kareem inspired hood kids to start skating, cause he was one of the first pros to come out of the hood. if you see some of the skaters that came from more poor people, or just some of the black skaters in their late 20's, they all look and skate like kareem. i think he made a big impact on black kids to start skating, which used to be a very white boy sport. look at tiago lemos. he skates like kareem nowdays, super cool to see

Dude! Kareem had a huge impact on many skaters of the 90s and beyond! It wasn’t about how many video parts skaters had. How many parts they had meant nothing to us; we didn’t keep track. It was what was done in each part they had, how they headed into a trick and they leaned on out of a trick; how they dressed, talked, carried themselves on and off the board. Menace was one of the most exciting things to happen for 90s skating and it sucks it went so quickly.

just saw an old clip of Kareem on instagram here in 2020 that led me to this video. Unbelievable how much his style pioneered the current, modern style of skateboarding. Even more unbelievable how he doesn't even get the credit for it. Yeah there's kid busting crazy tricks today, but Kareem holds the backbone for so many of those new styles. Thank you Kareem 🙌🏼
@morgellon7877
@morgellon7877 Жыл бұрын
He totally gets credit for what he did in skateboarding. Please don't create a false narrative. Kareem was HUGE in skateboarding for several years and had a great run, better than most pros. THPS was toward the end of his career, really, and he was already huge. His name is up there with the all-time greats, and always will be. Kareem didn't exactly pioneer anything in particular; he went bigger than most, had great style, that's it. I wish kids today skated like him; I'm sure he could have done a lot of the stuff kids are doing today, but it just doesn't look good a lot of the time. I'd say most of the time the simpler trick looks best; even a short grind can look better than a long one. An ollie can look better than a flip. Today it's all about the harder trick, not what looks best; Kareem is a style skater, although he did go big.

i remember my cousin showing me a 411 video when i was like 10 and there was this downhill line by this black dude jumping over all kinds of shit with some hip hop playing in the back and when i asked who it was my cousin grabbed me by the arm and said very sternly "that's kareem campbell, he's the shit" or something like that. then i went out and had my dad buy me some axions and a city stars shirt. the dude was one of the main reasons i got into skating, much respect.

it's interesting to hear the comments on learning about Kareem Campbell computer games. For anyone who had seen him in the flesh skating in the mid 90s it was mind blowing to see how he took tech tricks and did them big. Huge. Moreover, a flowing style that was powerful and effortless-looking at the same time. An absolute deity in the pantheon of skateboarding.

Campbell was one of my favorite skaters in the late 90s. He came to my towns board shop in like 99-00. I was in 5th grade I believe and was sour as hell that my mom wouldn't let me miss school to see him. Needless to say me and some friends skipped school and saw him at the shop along with 200 other kids who also skipped school.

Just want to say how much I appreciate you making these videos. As someone who grew up skateboarding in the 90's, these guys were like gods to me. Now that I'm 30, I don't really skate anymore, but I still vividly remember the skaters and their parts and how fascinated I was by them. Its so nice to see someone who is as passionate as I am, talking about it not only eloquently, but with such an effort to be accurate (the research does not go unnoticed). its absolutely brilliant commentary. Would love to see one on Chet Thomas. Thank you!

Well I could tell you a little about that. Right after AWS dropped their video in 09 and he had the final video part in that, he retired from pro skating sorta out of nowhere. Shortly after that, he became the team manager for Emerica. I'm pretty certain he's still their team manager to this day. I don't know why he retired from pro skating when he did because he was still on fire at the time. I guess he just wanted to move on and do other things but he's still active in the skate industry.

Black skater here. Age 29. Seeing Kareem on THPS in ‘99 was what got me into skating. Met him and Willy Santos at a demo at Allen (suburb north of Dallas) skatepark back in fall 2006. Got both him and Willy to sign my deck…Ice Cream Boardflips…and the current issue of The Skateboard Mag. Got to tell him face to face “you’re the reason I got into skateboarding” and he replied “I appreciate it Youngblood” while signing my deck/shoes/mag/etc. Obviously skateboarding transcends race but the words he said to me still resonate to this day. Glad to see skateboarding getting the light it needs (though I do not like Nike SB reverting to a raffle system for every SB Dunk since 2010 Crazy to believe I watched this dude Ghetto Bird and thought to myself at age 7; “if he can do it…I can do it.” Never Ghetto Birded but I learned hard flips. I will love skating until the day I die. Salute to you Rad Rat!

@JamisonMyth
@JamisonMyth 7 жыл бұрын
i used to skate some af 1s that were solid. if you know what to look for in skate shoes you can find nonskate shoes that work (suede, leather, doubles stitches, solid connection between sole and top)
@erlik07
@erlik07 7 жыл бұрын
Actually puma is making suedes for skating right now and they are quite good! And going to those nonskate shoes its the hardest question you could ask :P to be honest all nonskate shoes that are skated most likely are cheap canvas beaters like cons which I skated and were great before they had holes all over them. But by far the most fun for me were adidas gazzele. The way they flicked rocked and boardfeel was unimaginable but I wish I had my footprints in them because impact protection was inexistant :( Overhaul I still think that any skateboarding shoe is much better option than even the best nonskate shoe but they are fun to try non the less
@jarkokoo
@jarkokoo 7 жыл бұрын
Yes he did indeed, a LOT of dudes did back then. Puma Suedes were super popular shoes to skate with back in the 90s, as were Clydes and Leathers. IMO the Suedes are the best "non skate" shoes I've ever skated (and I've skated a lot of them). A lot of modern skate shoes own a ton to Puma Suede, Adidas Campus and Gazelle (and Etnies Lo-Cut Rap too) when it comes to the design part of the deal. I'd also say, that the basic Suedes are still legit shoes to skate, but I'd recommend to swap the insole to something a bit more cushioning.

Brian Wenning. You would see Brian Wenning back in the early millennium and you knew like this was it, this was gonna be a 10 year run like this was the future of skateboarding. And you would not think in a million years it would just all drop away. He seemed like the most unlikely candidate to fall victim to the party. He had a lot of ambition. But he was confused at the same time. You could kinda see it was kinda starting there. It was already beginning downhill just like the womanizing, the spending of the money and just the clubbing. It was already becoming grossly obscured. We were supposed to be on tour that summer and he didn’t show up and that was it. No one spoke to him or seen him since like imynamdabayis you know. He just left all mysterious like. Brian, where ever you at if you are out there…

Great video! I also started skating when THPS 2 came out (then proceeded to quit and get back into it a few times) and I always remembered seeing Kareem's videos. I especially played the heck out of THPS 3, and like you said, thought his video was strange. Even Chad Muska's video in THPS 3 was strange, it was more like a "Day in the life of" video. I'm curious what Chad Muska's been up to. Something about a shoe brand he was working on, but I don't know the details. I think he is still on Element.
