It is unnecessary to explain what role the domestication of horses played in the history of people. Long-distance mobility, military strategies and culinary additions are quite understandable advantages. However, where it happened raises a lot of questions. Especially considering that modern domesticated breeds do not originate from the earliest line of domestic horses associated with the Botai culture in the north of modern Kazakhstan, from the context of which the earliest archaeological evidence of harness, milking and keeping horses in pens was obtained, about 5.5 thousand years ago. Although with a lack of agreement between different scientists about the evidence of their domestication. Other candidate regions for horse domestication, such as the Iberian Peninsula and Anatolia, have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographical and temporal origin of the ancestors of modern domestic horses remained unknown.
In the new work, scientists from more than 15 countries analyzed the remains of horses from all the alleged centers of domestication, including the Iberian Peninsula, Anatolia, as well as the steppes of Western Eurasia and Central Asia
The sample included 264 newly sequenced ancient genomes and nine previously published ones, aged approximately 2 to 52 thousand years.
