Being a vegetarian tourist is very hard, and vegan must be even harder. As a vegetarian you can always find Indian restaurants when you're in a pinch. I've become quite a professional at finding ways, but it's still very hard and takes a lot of time and money. It was easier when I lived there, as I could just make my own food.

its actually rare to find vegan/vegetarian places here in japan. most cafe/restaurant will offer vegetarian dishes but usually many seasonings, and the way things are prepared, involve fish for example. still amazes me, that people here in japan think of vegetarians as still eating seafood. also amaze me, how rare it is to find brown rice when eating out, considering how much more nutritious it is compared to white rice

This is really exciting! I am not vegetarian, but “plant based” so I do eat some meat (because of health reasons) so I like to eat a lot of vegetarian and vegan foods. I also have a lot of dietary restrictions, and I think lots of places where I live are hard to navigate, let alone a whole new country with menus in a different language. Thankfully I can eat white bread and white rice, and skinless potatoes. So I can usually find *something* to eat. It’s just very difficult and painful if I pick something else out.

Shogo, I really enjoy your videos a lot, but some of them (like this one) are a bit long for what they are. I've been watching DAYS' worth of videos in preparation for learning Japanese, Japanese culture, and visiting Japan, and the length of the video is one of the things I consider before watching. I watched this one because it's a place I'm looking most forward to, but it's something to keep in mind in the future. Don't be afraid to make your videos too short. A California style restaurant! Brick walls and all. What did it cost? Knowing it's not supposed to be Japanese to ask....but tourists would want to know.
@grey56263 жыл бұрын
Some of the prices were visible on the menu. For example, the lunch set which came with appetizers and a drink was 1870円 or approximately $16.49 USD. Some of the sides were listed such as 648円 (approximately $5.71 USD) for fries, or 648円 for hummus and chips. Desserts appeared to be priced from 500円 (approximately $4.41 USD) to 715円 ($6.30 USD). The dinner courses presumably are more elaborate than the lunch set, with prices listed as 3850円 (approximately $33.95) to 5500円 (approximately $48.49 USD). In general, these prices seem in alignment, or more affordable than vegan restaurants such as Millennium in Oakland, California. I am unclear whether the menu prices in Japan typically include consumption taxes (which may be 8-10% contingent upon various factors from what I was able to research), however unlike the USA, tipping is not customary and might result in strange interactions if attempted.

@klausernstthalheim96423 жыл бұрын

@klausernstthalheim96423 жыл бұрын
@@annina134 Don't worry, the dishes in japan are delicious. It's just most dishes in Japan contain eggs and/or fish, so finding something vegan unprepared means you starve. Advertised vegan restaurants aren't common, especially outside Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka. But if look into the monk cuisine, you find vegan dishes. If you just want to eat vegetarian, this quite easy to achieve. I've just seen several tourists, with weird expectation for Japan (like it's a vegan paradise....finding girlfriends, while lacking themself...communicating in english outside Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka etc.). It's a lovely country, but you need to be prepared. I visited it several times and it was great. And if you aren't vegetarian at all, you should try Kobe beef once in a lifetime, it's divine.
@annina1343 жыл бұрын
@@klausernstthalheim9642 sounds good. Maybe i'll have this beef sometime. 😊 I'm currently trying to learn japanese, because I have heard that english is not so usefull in japan and if I go visit japan some day, it is a good thing to know. And I think it is anyway a nice language to learn. I like to learn new languages and can 5 languages quite good and a few I understand a bit.. 😁
@klausernstthalheim96423 жыл бұрын
@@annina134 Yeah it's a good idea to learn japanese. In my experience japanese main difficulty is reading and writing (because of Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana), but communicating verbally is easy, simply the grammar is quite logical and there are only few exceptions especially compared to german (still have trouble to explain to my brazilian buddies the pattern of my language, only icelandic and basque are worser for foreigner in Europe to learn). Japanese appreciate you warmly for your effort. If you want explore Japan off road in the autumn season i can recommend Nikko, because of hot springs and it tend to be like a surreal impressionist painting of a giant temple complex (some trees with bright red leafs, while others are bright green, yellow blueish green or purple). But of course Kyoto, Nara etc. is one of the must see especially in spring (just avoid japanese holidays).

Unfortunately you can't recommend it to everyone because none of it really aligns with a keto/zero carb lifestyle. Something that's actually a necessity since it's the best lifestyle change for people with insulin resistance (veganism is not despite what they want you to believe. There are just some essential nutrients you can only get from animal meats I'm sorry to say.). There is potential for it to be workable around the carnivore lifestyle (a zero carb way of eating) but it would take some considerable modifications that I'm sure they wouldn't like. So, no. As a highly insulin resistant (non-diabetic) ketovore, I can say this restaurant isn't for everyone. That said, I did really enjoy this style of video so please do more!

Got a cousin who is vegan. She makes me try all sorts of stuff that's "Just as good" and "I'll never be able to tell the difference" and maybe 3 of them so far have tasted roughly like it's supposed to, but not a single one of them has a texture that could pull one over on me in a blindfold test; I guarantee it. The vegan Burnt Ends actually made me sick to my stomach, so I never put stock in vegan food that's meant to replicate meat. Tofu can make some tasty stuff, but if you want a steak, eat a steak
