Thank you for making a video about Tavern Tenamonya! I have an upcoming short trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, and this spot looks perfect for us. I’m an omnivore, but my husband is a vegetarian, and I’ve been worried about finding authentic places where we can both have a great meal, without him having to always settle for plain avocado maki. 😅 The reservation system on their website looks a bit confusing, though. Do you remember if it’s basically asking people to book 7 days in advance? Also, I recently ordered your book and card set (so excited to get them!). Would they include similar restaurant recommendations for couples like us - where both omnivores and vegetarians can enjoy a good meal together? 😊Thanks again for all the helpful content you share!

That's the most difficult combination, and the same situation as us, because most restaurants don't have any vegetarian restaurants! 😭 For Teppan Tavern Tennamonya, you need to book 7 days in advance. Be ready to book as soon as reservations open for your date, because there are only a handful of tables and it books up very quickly. Mark it on your calendar! Thanks so much for ordering my book and cards! They have more general food info rather than specific restaurants, which may open or close. But there are lots here in this list I've put together, which is perfect for your situation (exactly the same as ours!). I've spent hours and hours researching them over the years - here's my list for Tokyo: cakeswithfaces.co.uk/japan/vegetarian-restaurants-in-japan/ (I've been meaning to publish lists for other places too, not sure when I'll have time to get round to it!).

@@cakeswithfaces Omg, thank you so much for your reply and for the link! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for and my husband will be thrilled too! It’s such a relief to know we’re not alone in this “omnivore + vegetarian in Japan” situation😅 I’ve been focusing so much on booking hotels/ryokans with good vegetarian options, but I was really struggling to find great spots outside the hotels. Your list is a lifesaver!

This place is independent so it's a one-off, but I'm sure there are many places to get wagyu beef in Tokyo too. One with veggie options is much harder to find, so let me know if you come across anywhere!

Yasaka shrine does look beautiful all lit up. At night will the temples and shrines still fill in your goshuincho book or is that something limited to day time visits? Thank you.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces Жыл бұрын
You'd only be able to get goshuin during the daytime, and the same with buying charms and amulets. The shrine "shops" tend to close around 5pm or so. At night there's no one there apart from maybe a security guard at larger shrines.

Probably lesser quality, but I've bought Wagyu beef at Costco in the USA many times, and it's delicious. It's characteristic is the marbling, so high fat. But Yolo, and eat it in moderation.... I like to shape it like a artichoke, and thus consider it a vegetarian dish :)

There are countless hidden-away shops in Japan, so it can be difficult to find one.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces Жыл бұрын
Yes! When you first go there it can be difficult to find places, when you don't realise that so many places aren't at street level. Sometimes it feels strange taking small staircases or lifts between buildings - it feels like you shouldn't be there sometimes!

your channel is such a godsend! I'm a vegetarian travelling with a non-vegetarian, and I feel so guilty that she might miss out on certain foods and experiences because of me. you've given me a lot of confidence in our trip now, not just that my partner won't miss out, but that I'll be able to have some incredible Japanese food myself. so excited to have a look at your blog about places with vegetarian options, as that's exactly what I've been searching for since we started talking about this trip. (it's officially happening this fall!) thanks a million 🥰

Excellent, so glad to help! Sometimes it seems even trickier when you're a vegetarian and non-vegetarian travelling together, than if you were both veggie - especially if you want to try Japanese food (I love pasta & salads, etc, but they're not what you travel around the world for!). But as long as you go armed with a list of places you know you can eat, you can both enjoy lots of delicious food. Enjoy planning your trip! cakeswithfaces.co.uk/japan/vegetarian-restaurants-in-japan/

I've been told that the Japanese word for "beef" is "gyu", so when you say Wagyu beef, you're saying "Japanese beef beef"
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces Жыл бұрын
Ah that makes sense! I hadn't thought of that!
@mPDC-gh8jy
@mPDC-gh8jy Жыл бұрын
"Gyu" means just "cow" (or more practically "cattle" here, because we are talking about food) as one of the animal species, like others are hippo, giraffe, monkey, and such. So saying "Wagyu beef" makes perfect sense and as a Japanese person, I can translate it into the Japanese term 和牛肉, or a phrase 和牛の肉. "Wagyu beef" "Wagyu milk" "Wagyu cowhide" are all make sense.
