The 9 issue run by John Byrne and Roger Stern is one of the best pure Cap runs ever. It can be found in old collections as "war and rememberance"

Something I find really interesting about the Stern and Byrne run is that it's so good while realistically doing so little (I swear this is a compliment). So many other "must read" runs have massive stories that significantly shift the status quo either permanently or for a big chunk of time. Englehart had the 50s Cap and Nomad, Gruenwald had "the Captain", Brubaker brought Bucky back and then had him take over, etc. In Stern and Byrne's run though, there isn't anything like that that I can remember. The biggest thing they did was introduce Bernie Rosenthal, which was a slower buildup. But, despite this lack of shifting/changing, the run is just so good. They're must reads not because you need them to understand anything fundamental about the character, but because they're simply that good.

@grantbaugh2773 well said man. Yeah Byrne is so good at continuing a character and respecting the original material.

Honestly, the post Secret Empire Mark Waid run is a short and fun run. It's a really fun read. It's broken up by the legacy numbering reboot and can be confusing to figure out where to go with it, but it's in two short volumes on the cheap. Great little read.

I'd say that the Steve Englehart run is a better Silver Age Cap introduction than the Lee stuff, but it's fun regardless.

@@sirlordcapybara801 I personally like the Lee/Kirby stories as more light-hearted, short stories. You can pick up pretty much any issue in their run and be set, not needing to read the issues before or after. There are a few points where continuity may be important, but generally the individual issues give you all you need. That said, they can definitely be pretty cheesy and some aspects have aged poorly. (Steve and Sharon's initial relationship gives me nightmares. How are you talking about getting married before you even know her name?!?)

I have a few suggestions. Maybe Nightwing, Constantine, Robin(could easily do one for each character like Tim Drake, Red Hood, Damian etc), Titans, Lex Luthor or Aquaman. Maybe even go outside of the traditional box with where to start New 52 or DC multiverse. Or even the best DC elseworlds styories like White Knight, DKR, Superman year one etc. But I'll have a think and get back to you.🙂

Is this how I would read it in order ? I wanna get into cap but like 100%
@Capfacts
@Capfacts Жыл бұрын
For 100% you'd want to start with the original "Captain America Comics" published during WW2. As a warning, only the original 20 are available in any sort of reprints or legal digital copies, so if you want to read the rest you either have to buy the very expensive physical copies or 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️. After that it would be Tales of Suspense, then Captain America volumes 1-5, and then it gets a bit convoluted after that so I'll have to come back with a link to a reading list or something.
@Capfacts
@Capfacts Жыл бұрын
OK, I found my list. If you want to 100% Cap, this is the list of comics you'll need to read. Captain America Comics 1-78 (weird note on this, issues 74 and 75 were renamed to "Captain America's Weird Tales", and issue 75 doesn't actually even have Cap in it so you can probably skip that one.) And like my previous comment said, only issues 1-20 and then 76-78 are available legally through reprints or digital versions. 21-75 haven't been remastered so you may have to look for less-than-legal options. Steve was brought back in Avengers issue 4, so that is probably good to read to get the "full" story. Tales of Suspense 59-99 are when Steve shared a comic with Iron Man. Half of the issue is Iron Man, the other half is Cap. Some people include issue 58 in this run, but my personal opinion is that it's an Iron Man story that features Cap, versus a Cap story. Captain America Volume 1 issues 100-454. The reason it starts at 100 is because Cap kept the numbering from the Tales of Suspense comics, but now Cap stories take up the whole issue instead of sharing with Iron Man who got his own new series. Captain America Volume 2 issues 1-13. This was after the Onslaught storyline and is basically an alternate universe. So you may want to read the Onslaught story before this and then the "Heroes Return" series after to get the "full" story. Alternatively, you could skip this whole volume as it takes place in an alternate universe so most of it plays no role in the greater lore of Captain America (the main exception being the character Rikki Barnes who does get introduced here, but she shows up minimally in other Cap stories) Captain America Volume 3 issues 1-50 Captain America Volume 4 issues 1-32 Captain America Volume 5 issues 1-50 Captain America issues 600 (they returned to the "original" numbering at this point which is why it can be confusing) Captain America: Reborn 1-6 Not technically part of the main series, but plays into the main story enough that it's worth reading. Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield. Similar to the Reborn series in the previous point, this isn't in the main series but plays enough into the story it's worth reading Captain America 601-619 (There's an issue 615 and then 615.1 in here, just to make things extra confusing) Optional: Captain America And… 620-640 This one is optional because it's a bunch of stories where Steve teams up with other heroes, but it's not part of the main run despite maintaining the same numbering Captain America Volume 6 issues 1-19 Captain America Volume 7 issues 1-25 All-New Captain America 1-6 Captain America: Sam Wilson 1-7 Captain America: Sam Wilson 8-24 and Captain America Steve Rogers 1-19 (This is because these series take place at the same time, so you may want to read alternating issues or just recognize there's stuff going on in the other series. If I had to pick I'd prioritize the Sam series over the Steve series as the Sam series involves Steve more than vice versa) Captain America Volume 8 issue 25 (this volume only has a single issue, continuing the numbering from Sam's series) Generations: Sam Wilson Captain America & Steve Rogers Captain America (Again, not strictly in the main series but it bridges the gap between Volume 8 and the next series Captain America issues 695-704 (back to the legacy numbering) Captain America Volume 9 issues 1-30 Captain America Volume 10 issue 0 (Sam and Steve are both being Captain America again, so this is to start those stories off) Captain America Symbol of Truth 1-11 and Captain America Sentinel of Liberty 1-11 (Same as the previous Sam and Steve run, where the stories intertwine somewhat so you might want to alternate issues, though that becomes more important starting with the next point) Captain America Cold War: Alpha (start of an event combining the two series Captain America Symbol of truth 12-14 and Captain America Sentinel of Liberty 12-14 Captain America Cold War Omega Captain America 750 Captain America: Finale Captain America Volume 11 issues 1-2 (this is the current series so this will continue for a while)

@Capfacts

I would suggest the "Man Out of Time" mini series by Mark Waid. It covers the time just after Cap came out of the ice and the main conflict is more about Steve finding his place in the world than it is about fighting as Captain America.

Captain America by Ed Brubaker is an interesting take on the hero because it follows straight into the Winter Soldier saga. But I need to read the original run by Mark Waid, and the Dimension Z arc by Rick Remender.
