Thank you for making this video Omar! I’ve been looking to start reading comics and my interest really began with Moon Knight, I never really understood the multiple author concepts and volumes and issues so this was a great video and helped me out a lot.

I just started Moon Knight on a whim thanks to my local library, and started with The Every Avenger. I went online to find other opinions on it, because I really enjoyed it. Unfortunate to find that your video says that it's widely considered "the worst Moon Knight story," hahaha. But if this is "the worst" Moon Knight story, then I'm very excited to keep reading others since I really enjoyed this one. I thought the whole DID/other-heroes-in-his-head thing was REALLY fascinating.

I read Lemire and Smallwood's run a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it! It's definetely not your standard superhero story, and much of it only really makes sense the further you get into it, but it's such a conceptually cool and emotionally resonant story about living with illness, abuse, and self-acceptance.

I think McKay‘s run is stacking up to be one of the best moon knight runs ever. But the original 1980 run and of course Jeff LEMIRE’S‘s 2014 run probably takes the cake for me.

While not a good starting point, I think one of Moon Knight's best stories is the "Scarlet Redemption" arc by DeMatteis and Garney. From time to time, there are religious themes sprinkled into Moon Knight, but the best arc to do it was Scarlet Redemption. It also features my favorite Moon Knight rogue, Stained Glass Scarlet.

Great list. A couple things I would add is that if you can find Marc Spector: MK whether through issues or illegitimate sources the first half is great and while the second half is pretty bad the mini series resurrection war is amazing and is pretty important in connecting MS: MK to the bottom. Also vengeance of moon knight on its own is meh but it’s true purpose is to be a heroic conclusion to the bottom storyline so paired with that it’s amazing and is a great set up to the future of the character

Oh man. Thank you so much Omar for this video. It really has me pumped. As someone who has mental illness it means so much to see us represented in the superhero comic world. And with such a badass character. Lol. I own the oversized hardcovers of Bendis' and Lemire's runs. Love them. I'm getting the Huston, Benson & Hurwitz Omnibus next month. Can't wait. Ellis' six issue run is my 2nd favorite story arc of all time. Yeah. It's that great. I really hope that Huston, Benson & Hurwitz Omnibus leads to a Ellis, Wood, and Bunn omni. I know that's incredible hard given the accusations against Ellis and I think even Wood. I mean no disrespect to the accusers or the terrible things they are being accused of but we need to be able to be able to separate the art from the artist. And that's also a great point you make Omar that other people work on these comics as well and should not face consequences for another's terrible acts. So psyched for the Disney+ show!!! May Khonshu protect all you night travelers. Take care and peace everyone.

Awesome overview, Omar. I had avoided the Bendis run because of all the negative talk but finally read it last year and loved it. I think we are seeing how Jeff Lemire and the new Disney+ series took Bendis' ideas and ran with them. As this overview shows - Moon Knight (for better or worse) is a character that can be approached VERY differently depending on the creators involved. Do we focus on the Multiple personalities disorder, the Egyptian god background, the rich man is a hero angle?

So as a long term Moon Knight fan (and FORMER long term Ellis fan for obvious reasons) you can easily skip the Ellis run and still enjoy the character and his dichotomy to his full extent. I can't stop you but just out of moral respect, you really don't have to read his run. That being said, this was a dope ass video!! I'm gonna reread the Monch run and the Lemire run before the first episode drops next week. Easily one of my favorite characters of all time not just because he looks cool, but that he also helped me through a lot of mental health issues growing up, so for that....thanks Marc :'). I'm still blown away that Marc's getting a live action series......like WTF man lol

Couple of recent Panini releases in the UK with the show looming, the Moon Knight Omnibus (what Panini call their thicker trades) has the Huston run from 2006, no word yet on whether there will be a follow up with the Benson run. There's also one of their Bookazine format offerings out collecting the first 6 issues of Vengeance, a lot cheaper than tracking down the OOP trade from Marvel with the equivalent content, just frustrating that they went with the fixed price point of the Bookazines for that as there's only another 4 issues in that run and putting it all out as a regular trade would have seemed a better solution for getting it back into print.

So here’s my dilemma. I’m curious to give Moon Knight a shot, so I was looking at starting with the Benson/Hurwitz/Huston omnibus since it’s more modern. However, online most people say the original Moench/Sienkiewicz run is essential to truly appreciate the later runs. How true is this? Should I start with the Moench run instead?
@lantztalksmanga2 жыл бұрын
As someone who started with the Moench omnibus, I think you'll be fine starting with the Benson/Hurwitz/Huston omnibus. The only real essential issues in the Moench omni is Moon Knight (1980) #1-20 as it introduces Konshu, Bushman, and Frenchie. But if you have a basic understanding of the character then you'll be fine starting with the Huston omni.
@dragonman7842 жыл бұрын
@@lantztalksmanga 20 essential issues does seem like a somewhat high number. Since you’ve read the Moench omnibus, how did you like it?
@lantztalksmanga2 жыл бұрын
@@dragonman784 It was average in my opinion. The only issues that really stood out to me was Marvel Team Up Annual #4 and the 1980 solo series. Marvel Team Up has Moon Knight fight alongside Daredevil, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist against the Purple Man. I love stories that feature street level heroes working together so it's my personal favorite issue in the omni. The 1980 run is when Moon Knight really starts to find his darker roots, but the rest of the book features a lot of campiness. So if you don't mind lots of campiness then you'll probably enjoy the earlier issues, but it just has too much camp for my taste.

I think Moon Knight is one of those characters that benefits when a writer redefines the character in their run like Huston and Lemire did. But Brian Michael Bendis just went too far out there in his run with Maleev for my and many others taste. I'm happy for those who enjoyed the run, but I just couldn't get over the Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Captain America personalities. It's like he wanted to write a team up book with those characters, and Marvel said no so he found a loophole to make it happen.
