For those that don't know, Season 3 did change the status quo on Homelander, although it was so subtle that even I initially missed it. Someone else on KZbin (The Closer Look) pointed out a defining character trait for Homelander, and I realized that trait changed in the final scene when Homelander killed the protestor. Season 1-3 have been defined by Homelander's desire to be loved by public forcing him to hide his true most atrocious desires. The perfect example is he couldn't wipe out the protestors in Season 2 because he thought that would destroy his public image even though he fantasized about it right there. Well, end of Season 3, he kills one in what could at best be called a dangerous overreaction. The crowd decides it loves it, his son revels in the moment, and Homelander now knows he has a segment of the public that loves who he truly is, not who he thinks he has to pretend to be. As the series progresses, the most interesting thing about Homelander isn't his decaying mental health, although that is happening and interesting, it’s that he's losing reasons to pretend he needs to act like he's on a higher moral ground than he is.
@DutchSimmer12 жыл бұрын
Exactly, like he said to Annie about the video leaking and his whole “if everyone hates, I’ll go full psycho” is now even scarier because he can go full psycho and have the love that he desires. I’d love to see him being absolutely unhinged for the first couple episodes, but as was pointed out in this video, if he loses his powers, maybe he’ll see what kind of hell scape he has created. Let’s be honest, Homelander having this applause while doing the things he always does will undoubtedly “inspire” more Supes to come his side and be just as dangerous as he is.

As much as it’s already political it (to me) was analogous to trumps storming the capital, realising he can do whatever he wants and people will still support him, potentially this could be (as others have pointed out) leading to a direct homelander storming the capital as happened in the comics.
@MidlifeCrisisJoe2 жыл бұрын
It’s all building up to a major plot point that was in the original comic as well, Homelander leading a Supe coup against the US government, killing the President and taking over. The main difference is that in the comic it was (in a bit of extremely stupid writing) all revealed to be a plot to drive Homelander insane by Black Noir (who was a clone of Homelander the whole time), but in the show they’re building up to this point much more naturally and making it more directly Homelander’s own choice.
@jasonreed75222 жыл бұрын
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe the comics were written by someone who fully admits to hating the superhero genere, so expect the comics to have acts of inane writing just to make supes looks extra stupid. Also, i don't know if I'm alone in this interpretation but when homelander killed the protester "in self defense" (he was in 0 danger even if the guy litterally shot him) it looked to me like the crowd was deciding to run or cheer or something, and then 1 person (MM's rival & soyboy) decides to cheer. What i wonder is if the cheer was genuine support or a survival attempt by placating homelander. (Which just like appeasement with Hitler is only going to encurage him to get worse) This incident definitely marks Homelander getting an apparent greenlight from the public to be more agressive than ever, which will not be a good thing for the boys & starlight.

The whole “the enemy of my enemy” thing is so fraught for backstabbing, which does make for good stories but not a lot of character progression. I think that S4 culminating in Homelander supporters storming the capitol is basically guaranteed to happen at this point, not only because the comics kind of do that but because that's basically the natural endpoint for the Trump allegory they've been building up for three seasons Edit: for people yelling that I'm making things political or that S3 "went woke" I'll let you in on a little secret: Homelander was always an allegory for everything wrong with the US and if you think the show is making that too obvious and alienating viewers you should really read the comics because they are much much less kind to your viewpoint. Art is political. All of it. The modern idea of the superhero was created by immigrants. Any claim that this is some new phenomenon says a lot more about the person complaining than the art they're complaining about. Read a book. Go outside. You clearly need to experience the world.

This was a great season. Some of my on the head prediction for Season 4 would be: >Ryan starts to become more like Homelander, adopting some of his cruelty and disregard for others but his actions start to become too much on him as he remembers his mother's wishes for him to be good and her death. >Dakota Bob becomes the US president and pardons Stan Edgar, who rebuilds a new Superhero team (this could be the seven, after a hypothetical scenario where Homelander is fired) with a black noir that is either a new one more closely reflecting the comics (I.e. Homelander clone), or the current one who Stan manged to fix before he dies of his gut filled wounds killing him. Victoria is alligned with Stan yet again either from a plot twist going back to season 3 where they planned to overtake Homelander, or she goes back to him cuz her daughter is not in good shape (either from compound V or Homelander threatening her). A-Train might be with Stan since he was looking at Black Noirs helmet in the S3 finale so he might finally not be with Homelander. Maybe he'll even fight him with the Boys in the season 4 finale to somewhat redeem himself. >Homelander creates more supes and tries to reanimates some old ones for his team (either for the Seven since so many of them are gone, or for a new team after he gets kicked outta Vought). The world (minus Toad and his cronies) wants Homelander to be held accountable for the all the deaths he has caused including on the plane and the guy at the ralley. >The deep comes out as openly fish sexual and finds he is not alone and finds others who are also but discovers that the fish and octopus are not consensual in their relationships (dont ask this). >Butcher has some unexpected residual effect from temp v, and has to deal with the ramecations of his declining health along with the collapse of his relationships with Ryan and the rest of his team.

As much as I love The Boys, I think they will run into a wall after season 4 unless they figure out how to progress the story better. The last 2 seasons were pretty much just the boys finding something to fight Vought, things end in a shitshow and everything resets for the main characters. It's becoming a very predictable and tedious pattern and they need to change that.

@aidanshea59422 жыл бұрын
I've noticed a pattern in the Boys that I think might continue: TL;DR: I think they're going to introduce a character called Tek-Knight and he's going to draw a lot of focus In season one we got The Seven who are a parody of the Justice League In season two we got stormfront who in the comics is meant to be a play on Thor, they are also the leader of Payback in the Comics, and in turn Payback is based of of the Avengers. In season three we got Soldier Boy an obvious play on Captain America and the leader of the show's version of Payback. But there's one character missing from the comic version of Payback: Tek-Knight who in the comics is a play on both Iron-Man and Batman, being a billionaire who "builds" (it's made by Vought scientists) a suit to stand on the same level as the Supes Now think about it, he was seemingly purposely left out of season three, with Black Noir out of the picture the Seven need a Batman figure to fill the vacant spot, and the show seems to place emphasis parody of a main member of "Marvel's Big Three" those being Thor, Captain America and Iron-Man every subsequent season, so it makes sense for season four they would go with Tek-Knight. Also, This doesn't really add to my point but imagine what the writers could do with a more realistic take on the "Benevolent Billionaire" superhero trope, it could be both funny and poignant.
@VictoriaClerici2 жыл бұрын
I think that is one of the few elements the show has yet to satirize, the "genius, hard working, self made" billionare (aka Musk, Bezos and such), the way they make their money through exploitation or inheritance and how they build that supposedly incredibly inteligent persona around them. I don't know if the show is willing to go that far on its critiques tho, even more so if we consider it's made by Amazon lol
@maguc59062 жыл бұрын
I think the end of S3 pretty good setup for the whole "Homelander creates a supe army in order to take over the USA". Him slowly realizing that he can really, genuinely do anything he wants and he will have supporters is a good stepping stone for that support to not only be the public, but other superheroes. Whether it will go into the "Homelander takes over the White House" plot line or not, is a whole different story, I do think they're setting the seeds for S4 to be Homelander taking the reins of an army, supes or the public. I also think S4 will be the time The Boys start taking permanent Compound V. At the very least Butcher and Hughie, as they will need CV in order to not die from V24. They can also go into the "Dead man walking" trope, but I feel that limits the story and needs to be used as a final season type thing

Two options: Black Noir clone ramped up on temp V. Won't kill him but sends him mad. Thus we get a supe at Black Noir levels of the comics, and with the power set to be the tool that Billy uses to kill HL, before offing Noir. Or, Black Noir becomes Tech Knight - extensively rebuilt, and will have a secondary story arc in order to take out Soldier Boy, possibly with MM. Temp V will be have been made from Ryan's DNA. Not sure if that will be a thing but would explain the power level hikes. For a story arc from that, we could have HL not knowing that - until too late - , and takes it with either no effect, or ramps up power and starts to unhinge him further. Making the need for a massive team up to take him out. My personal favourite idea is that Ryan, or new Noir, or Billy, end up being the real super big bad. And no matter how unhinged HL is - he doesn't become nicer etc - HL dies a complete hero, perhaps taking out Ryan. Only the Boys who survive know this and are disgusted that he is forgiven and loved in death. Would be a beautiful swerve.
@SSJ_EWGF2 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason why the end of S3 feels so unsatisfying to people is mainly to do with how little screentime Ryan got, considering him picking Homelander and the last scene hinting of the kid becoming as twisted as his biological father is suppose to be tie that kinda concludes the theme this season deals with on the role of fathers, and how inadequate (and lack of) parenting will lead to a cycle of brutal violence and cruelty. We see this theme explored incredibly well through characters like Butcher whose trauma over his father's abuse led to his current mindset where even if he knows what he is doing is wrong, he cant help dragging himself and other people into his vengeance no matter how horribly it may get for all of them. We see this through Soldier Boy whose lack of parental acceptance lead to behavior to deteriorate into a person that would constantly traumatize his teammates. And of course, with Homelander and his various problems and issues, all accumulating into him getting Ryan back through appealing to their respective superpower identities and to pleading to Soldier Boy that they can all be a family again. With all three of these examples, all 3 characters have gone through substantial development and further characterization, but with Ryan, he just runs away from Butcher after he gets mad at him, and next scene he's goated into accepting Homelander again.

I can’t think of a fate he would find worse than having to live the rest of his life as a normal human. that would probably be a better fate, narrative wise than just straight up killing him. I haven't read the comics, but the show is definitively reaching a tipping point. They should either finish the show this season or the next, preferrably now to retain the masterpiece status. I guess execs won't let that happen and will milk the cow until the audience is fed up and it goes into a slump tp be forgotten like GoT. I don't want that because the show has been so good so far. Super heroes are on the way out as a cultural phenomena as we see with the poor performance of Marvel and DC along with the need for a reboot to keep the franchises fresh. It has truly reached its saturation point and I feel fewer and fewer people care about the movies. Recent Marvel movies are cringe at best - they're just bad movies with a loyal audience. The decline is real. The time pf super heroes is over and the boys should reflect that in their ending of the show!

I can see a depowered Homelander plotline going in such a way that most of the rest of the world isn't aware that he is without powers, but he still has to get people (mainly Vought, A-Train and the Deep) to do what he wants. Thus, he uses the (now empty) threat of killing them to keep them in line and plays off their fear of him to get what he wants without even needing to flash his laser eyes. Also, I wouldn't be surprised by S4 having Homelander getting his most loyal followers to use Temp V and commit acts of violence on his behalf. It would be a challenge the Boys could fight and provide some good action, and it could also be reminiscent of Homelander's supe uprising in the comics.

I hope we get to see Deep try out a new persona as a darker version of the character, with hair and tattoos like Jason Mamoa, and utterly failing to be taken seriously. I also want to see new supes and a new look homelander 7. The other thing I would desperately love to see is wolfenstein, mech suit Stormfront. I dont believe she killed herself, just because Ashley said so and there was a bloodstain on the bed and perhaps Edgar has her hidden away to use for another "rebranding" opportunity.

Can Supes even get tattoos? Most Supes have pretty high durability so the needle probably won't pierce the skin.

@@Wishmaster787 I feel like Deep would wear fake ones. Also Supes can at least be injected. Thats how A-Train killed popclaw.

I imagine that if homelander loses his powers that he won't tell anyone, if anything he'll try his hardest to maintain the image of being above everyone else. Inevitably this would lead to him relying on temp V for restoring his power, speeding up the timetable on his downfall even more

He could try to restore it completely with regular V like with kimiko but that would require him to trust in someone else learning of his vulnerability

4:44 I really like the idea of Ryan being a key to beat either butcher with emotional fight with him being what’s left of Becca, and him either fighting Homelander with him being stronger. But I don’t think it’s right to write him off
