Japan is becoming increasingly more popular with tourists from around the world every year. If this is your first time visiting Japan, you may be overwhelmed by all the different cities and attractions!
Which is better? Tokyo, or Osaka? Hokkaido, or Okinawa? For such a small country, you'd be surprised at how different the lifestyle is on opposite ends of it. In this video I took 7 of the top 10 currently most popular cities and described them by atmosphere and vibe, and hopefully this will help you understand the distinct differences when you plan your itinerary.
If you've visited Japan many times, or even live here, all of this knowledge may sound like second nature, as it does to me too, but in planning my trip to Vietnam with Tatsu, I realized I didn't know much about the differences between cities like Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Hanoi, or Hoi An, and I realized that there are many people out there not sure of the same in Japan. Hopefully this video is useful for people in that situation! :)
Don't forget to add any information I may have missed!

I went to Japan a few times before and lived in Tokyo for the most part. It was definitely a fun experience, especially recommended to the first-time visitors! I also really wanted to thank you, Micaela, for showing us around Fukuoka and teaching us about the city. I will be studying in Japan starting next fall, and I probably would have never thought about choosing this city before, simply because I wouldn't have known enough about it. To be honest, I'm not even sure I would've been brave enough to go through with the idea of studying in Japan, if not for your encouragements in your previous videos! I really hope you know how much of a positive influence you have on our lives through your videos!

京都、大阪に来たなら奈良へも是非。 I recommend Nara. Nara is next to Kyoto. Nara was the capital of Japan to before. Nara have history from A.D. 780. The deer park is famous. You can stroll through vast Nara Park and Japanese style garden. And old streets in Nara can be seen in Naramacho.

Thanks for this! I'll share your video with my little brother so that he wants to visit Japan while I'm there again :'D.... I lived in Kobe for nearly 1 year and saw Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Fukuoka. I really really really love the Kansai area for it's people and traditional places. I just went to Fukuoka to visit my former teacher and say goodbye to her and was soooo surprised about the city, 'cause I didn't expect anything. It's so pretty there, people dress so nicely, there is so much variety on food, it's not as loud as Osaka or as chaotic as Tokyo and everything seems so sophisticated, lol. For traveling, Osaka and Kyoto are great but for longer stays like exchange programs and homestays, Kobe (♥) or Fukuoka seem perfect! Btw. I'll be in Nagoya for an internship and now I'm gonna watch everything food related on your channel and make a to-eat-list (◕‿◕)..............

I'd like to add the place, Kamakura, where we can see a lot of temples, and we can feel old Japanese town. As you know, the place is close to Tokyo, so we don't have to go to Kyoto which has also a lot of temples. I highly recommend Nagasaki. It's a mixture of both past and present with beautiful mountains and a bay surrounding it. The food is delicious and the people are friendly. You can definitely get history lessons about WWII, but also about the Dutch/foreign influence there during the time when Japan was closed off to the rest of the world (with the exception of Dejima).

If you like temples and Buddhist sites, Koyasan is really a cool place. Peaceful, tranquil, not touristy.....It is a small version of Kyoto but a lot better as the whole town is created for Buddhism and preserved as such. You can stay in temples and attend meditation and morning services. Their vegetarian foods are really yummy too.

When I went to Japan I stayed with my best friend's family in Zushi, Kanagawa for a couple weeks. I would totally recommend Kanagawa prefecture as a place to visit. There is historic Kamakura, Fujisawa and Enoshima, modern Yokohama, and lots of other great towns that are all connected by trains and buses. It's an easy prefecture to travel around and perfect for people who are looking for a mix of relaxing on the beach, hiking around historic or natural areas, or exploring traditional Japanese culture in a place that is much more laid back than Tokyo (which by the way is only about an hour away from most places in Kanagawa). Also you can see Fuji from a lot of places along the coast or in the hills! It's such a gorgeous place!

Hi Micaela. I strongly recommend to visit Ishikawa prefecture where I grew up. It's a quite beautiful place, and I think it's similar to Kyoto (but more quiet and not so many foreigns here). Actually people can come by Shinkansen after visiting Tokyo, or by train from Kyoto and Osaka. We have one of the biggest gardens, a famous museum, a traditional castle, a big market selling fresh food etc. Please come visiting Ishikawa once, and then you'll know here is the best place to visit and stay D

I liked Fukuoka. It's a nice small city probably 2-3 days there should suffice. I was there for 2 days and I had a friend of mine show me around. There are lots of food and sites to see. Micaela has a bunch of videos about Fukuoka which intrigued me on visiting the city. But if you're short on time and it's your first time in Japan it wouldn't hurt not to go there. In my previous comment, all of those places are nice to go to. Hakone stands out a bit because it's up in the mountains out of the city. I really liked this change of pace. If you like onsens and outdoors check this place out. It's really close to Tokyo; about 45mins on the shinkansen. For the Kansai Region, you can place your hub in Kyoto or Osaka then visit the neighbouring cities easily.

Was in Japan for 2 weeks this month til a few days ago. My tip is about Bamboo forests in Kyoto. I didn't go to the popular tourist-y Arashiyama bamboo forest because google reviews say that while beautiful, it's short and full of tourists trying to take a shot of just themselves and the forest. Not to mention I was on a bike (I rented one next to Saga Torokko station for 1000 yen) and they don't let you park anywhere near the forest. Instead I visited many surrounding temples and shrines and there were multiple bamboo forests with literally NO ONE there. I took a lot of great photos. Bike around the area especially the Northwest area near Adashino Nenbutsu-ji. It's so peaceful and quiet, almost no tourists and very pretty neighborhoods/view. It's a little uphill til there but then you can bike nonstop downhill allll the way down past the Togetsukuyo bridge from this point and it's so refreshing! Biking around was definitely a highlight of the trip as well.

Yes, Kyoto, Arashiyama and Nara are nice for cycling. You can also cycle from Arashiyama to the Ryoan temple.
