Unfortunately, even had the organization been instituted earlier, it wouldn’t have helped. The Secret Service in the beginning had no part in protecting the President, but rather were tasked with cutting down on the amazing amount of counterfeit money circulated in the United States at the time (hence why until March of 2003 they were a branch of the U.S. Department of the Treasury). It is estimated that about 1/3 of the U.S. currency in circulation was counterfeit when Lincoln signed the piece of legislature that would establish the Secret Service.

Lincoln Beard at least what i had learned was because of a girl whom had wrote him telling him He would look better with w iskers because of his face being so thin. At least that's the story i have heard over the years. Lincoln had also been kicked in the face by i think it was a horse? Any how Lincoln was kicked in the face and that is why one side grew differant than the other. Lincoln is still my favorite President by far. I can't believe his so called body gaurd was not held ac ountable for not being where He should have been not to mention being a drunk and sleeping on the job. Lets face it He got away with murder. I so wish we could go back in time and that i was the Presidents body gaurd that night. Booth would have got a big surprise. Just imagine how much more Lincoln could have done had He lived and was able to finish out his terms. A great man gunned down by a coward.

Pauline Gregory Umm.. If young black men would stop running from Police and resisting arrest, they might not get into trouble. It'd be pretty hard for a cop to plant evidence more than once. I suggest that we all obey the laws and don't resist arrest- as to not get chased and shot. Idk why you wouldn't stop for Police... You will just get a record faster and they wills be angry that they have to chase you.

He should have said "Like anybody even cares".I love the deathbed picture of lincoln! He was a piece of human garbage who who got exactly what he deserved. What's this stuff about him and his kids? Who cares about his brats. He didn't care anything or anybody. abe started a senseless war that resulted in over 600,000 battlefield deaths plus the injuries that were worse than death. Now, add in the widows and orphans he created. (What's this stuff about his kids dying how sad ole abe was. Like anybody even cares about his brats) WIDOWS AND ORPHANS. This death and desrtuction added up to about two million ruined lives. OK. Are any of you getting a more realistic picture of abe? abe's kids, yeah whatever. TWO MILLION LIVES RUINED . No man in history did more to earn his fate the lincoln. Imagine the kids abe made fatherless, and how removing hundreds of thousands of grandfathers removed from the family structure. Poor ole abe lost some brats he got sad. HYPOCRITE SCUMBAG.He had it coming for a long time. He was a dimwit to. Anybody with half a brain who did what he did would stay hidden or travel with a hundred body guards. Totally CLUELESS. Oscar Horsey: You must be referring to the bullet proof top of JFK's limousine. It was the president himself who asked to leave it off. Such a fatal decision! But he liked to be available to the people. This also left Govornor Conolly in equal danger. And so the governor was shot too.

it was a very hot and humid day in Dallas, the air conditioning in that 1961 stretched Lincoln did not work well, for people in the back, and so the top came off for the parade. The top though was not really bullet proof. it was plexiglass and snapped together. The car was later stripped and redone with a roof, and armoured, air conditioning was beefed up, then painted black and used till the late 70's. It was Registered to Ford and leased to the US Gov. for $500 a year, which is why Ford got it back in 1978 and is in the Henry Ford Museum.

Mark Stephan yea I also wonder is there a possibility that this whole thing was not a coincidence, a lot of people with power had business in both parts union and confederate during the Civil War, and although many supported Lincoln some are known to have false support for Lincoln the only reason they supported him was because they were outnumbered and it was becoming clear that slavery was becoming a massive issue, the truth is most of America's biggest power houses of the time of course ran off of slave labor which basically made their income insane as they didn't have to pay wages. Booth killed himself after shooting the president which is odd if he so strongly believed in slavery why would he end this life, rather than be a martyr? I think it could mean that maybe Booth wasn't actually as pro slavery as we might think because if he firmly believed in his cause he would feel no reason to take his life. next they had locations on both of the other guards but not on baker which is kind of weird as well. however a couple things struck me as odd was it possible bakers misdeeds could've been forgiven because he was presented his terrible excuse so well or because his judges were payed off. if they could recommend a terrible cop to the president who had some communication with Lincolns family and get him chosen they could've easily bribed him with a couple drinks while booth went to shoot the president. next the secret service thing also raises an eye Lincoln doing something about counterfeit money could piss off a lot of people, very powerful people at that.

I remember one account saying that Lincoln, himself, sent the guard away, saying that he did not need security that night. And then, he told the guard, "Goodbye," which ironically happened to be his last word to the guard. Ever. I don't remember exactly what program that was on, but I think it was a PBS program. There were a few accounts that I heard, but the most prevalent was that he was away, at a bar, across the street, drunk. And, most accounts said that he was supposed to be guarding the president at the time of the incident. This is my first hearing that Lincoln, himself, signed into law, that there would be a Secret Service. I thought Secret Service was already around for a couple of years. And, I certainly did not know that Lincoln was the one who signed for it to exist. And, again, ironically, it was the day of the incident. I did once hear, on PBS, that Booth said he could have gotten Lincoln earlier, and he felt he should have. Booth was at Lincoln's second inauguration, at the Capital Building, and Booth claimed he would have had a good shot, if he had followed through with it, that day. I don't know why only one guard was assigned to the president, at a time, anyway. Instead of having one guard per shift (four total), they should have had four per shift (16 total). That would have helped. Cause, then, the one drunk guard could use the excuse that there were three other guards with him, so he had a chance to take a break during his shift. And, that would be a better excuse. But even then, he shouldn't have been drunk during his shift. And, the other three guards would have been there to catch Booth before the incident, while the one guard was away, drunk.

Sal Litvak makes the case that Ward Hill Lamon had a much more prominent role in guarding Lincoln than historians have given credit for. The book that came with DVD release of the movie Saving Lincoln contains letters and notes that seem to contradict the narrative that he was a "bumbling" peripheral figure. I'm a huge fan of the channel. Keep up the great work

I don't know if it's correct, but I've heard that Parker didn't lose his job until Stanton lost HIS job, which is one of the reasons people see a conspiracy with Stanton behind it. In other words, they think that Parker's carelessness was part of a plan.

Almost skipped this one, because as an American who loves history and didn't sleep through my high school classes, I knew very well that Lincoln authorized the formation of the Secret Service on the day he was assassinated, and that it matters naught since the Secret Service had nothing to do with presidential security for decades to come. As I'd hoped, though, this video still had stuff to teach me - pretty sure I'd never heard of Parker. Thanks for doing your usual stellar job!

Maybe Parker was drunk and asleep and a brother when Lincoln was assasinated. But it dies seem likely he had great connections to Lincolns wife or someone else since it seems odd he was not fired before or publically blamed for the assasination.

There were some anomalies. A man named Spangler spent years in jail for merely holding Booth's horse. Parker deserted his post and was not even fired.

This certainly bears more investigation. Who was John Frederick Parker, really? Mary Todd Lincoln defended him on one occasion, to her regret, but who else? He must have had defense in depth to be able to get away with such incredible dereliction of duty time after time. He obviously knew someone *very* powerful who was *extremely* tolerant of his misconduct. Mere charisma wouldn't have been enough. And then there's the question of how he was chosen to be the guard that night. Was it just his turn or was there a last minute switch? Inquiring minds want to know! Then there's the surprising fact in passing that as much as 1/3 of the money in circulation during President Lincoln's administration was counterfeit. That cannot have been caused by a few lone counterfeiters with printing presses in their basements. That had to be the work of banking interests trying to deliberately undermine the American currency so that they could better lobby for a central bank in the United States of America. We now know that John Wilkes Booth was not just a disgruntled lone gunman. He was part of a plot against the president. An earlier attempt had been made to assassinate President Lincoln on August 1864 by an "unknown assailant". John Wilkes Booth had been initiated in the pro-Confederate Knights of the Golden Circle in Baltimore. However, it was the bankers who were even more disgruntled at Lincoln because he had refused to borrow money from them at exorbitant interest rates to fight the Civil War. This after they had gone to all the trouble of inciting the war in the first place so as to put the US Government in a position where it would have to borrow money. President Lincoln had the audacity to print money on the full faith and credit of the United States Government without the permission or involvement of any banker. Another American president also tried to do this, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He met a fate similar to Lincoln. 'Nuff said.

A Completely Generic Duck ...read the real history on ol honest Abe, not the watered down history books you find in a lot of schools, and you will see he was not as honest as you believe. There are speeches that he wrote on how the white race was so much superior then the black race. But of course you just believe that I am baiting everyone who watches this video, so you will not read the real history. God bless you.

@@jaredclark9312 First of it is fact, Lincoln believe blacks where equal under law and despised slavery, but at the same time he did not think blacks where equal to white people.. He wanted to send them to Libya and give them there own state.. He also said that, he believes whites and black could never coexist with peace in the U.S.. People really should learn how to read..
