"kandar" means to carry something on your shoulder which was the original way this nasi was sold in public in the old days. a "kandar" is something you use to carry things around on your shoulder(s). picture carrying a noble person in a palanquin like people did in ancient times. so in the old days, nasi kandar sellers carried their nasi in pots and the rest of their wares balanced at the 2 ends of poles they carry on their shoulders. these days, the nasi is served on counters in restaurants instead of being carried around with a "kandar". the method the nasi is being sold have changed but the name remains. enjoy malaysia!

I definitely and an extrovert. But I have met others who are more introverted. But even as an extrovert... it took me a very long time to get comfortable talking to a camera, especially in front of people! It's a weird feeling lol.. Nasi Lemak - coconut milk rice, Malay traditional rice served with various types of condiments and dishes. Nasi Kandar - regular rice, originally from Penang, traditionally mixed with localized Indian influenced add-on dishes carried on shoulder. Nasi Goreng - fried rice, originally from China but have been localized into various types of hybrids. Nasi Biryani - India/Pakistan/Bangladesh special biryani rice served with add-on original dishes from that region. Nasi Ayam - Chicken Rice, originally from China, but have so many local hybrids. Nasi Kerabu - Northeast Malay traditional herbal rice served with traditional Malay dishes. Nasi Dagang - Northeast Malay traditional rice served with local dishes. Note for drinks, if you order "tea" you're more likely to get milked or pulled tea. If you want plain tea you say "teh O". Also works with coffee, you say "kopi O" for Malaysian version of Americano, or "milo O". "O" basically means plain/sugared with no milk. Try "Teh O Ais Limau", Brad. Favorite drink during hot days.

Nasi Kandar is originated from Penang. You can find great Nasi Kandar shop there, competition is therefore very great. Some places you might even have to queue for about 20 to 25 minutes

"Menara" means "tower" ..so the name of the tower with the "disc" is Menara KLCC / KLCC Tower. And the little black balls in your cabbage are mustard seeds. Here's a tip: in Malaysia, if you say "tea" (teh in Malay) then you're gonna get milk tea. So if you want ice tea (as in black tea) then ask for teh-o ice. Same thing with coffee (kopi in Malay), if you want black coffee, then ask for kopi-O.

Normally we ate nasi kandar with your right hand...mix it all up...by the way we normally hold the spoon with your right hand and scoop the food and put the food into your mouth...the fork is normally to assist and hold the food down when cutting big pieces of the food with the spoon😊

@@WhereisBrad I don't think we ever really use it outside of describing the drinks. I think the "o" is like nil or number 0 for English speakers, as in where you pronounce "007" as "double-oh-seven" instead of "zero-zero-seven".

@@WhereisBrad oh, just to add, when you want for example, a black coffee without sugar, you would say "Kopi O kosong". Kosong translated to zero, but in drinks it meant "no sugar". By default , those drinks without creamer or milk, are still mixed with sugar. This is not exclusive for coffee, you can use it on other drinks. Just giving you an example if you want drinks without sugar, at local restaurant, just add the word "kosong".
