🌎 : DONGDAEMUN-GU, SEOUL (9.2/10)
I had no idea when i went to Dongdaemun i was going to see so many illegal goings on! I found a few backstreet illegal game room, old rundown tea rooms soliciting men with egg yolk and most surprisingly, some restaurants selling banned foods. I also experienced Korean wig culture and made friends with some Korean war veterans.

Alright I just finished watching all your playlists and I got to get this off my chest. You are perfect for this and your videos are great. It's raw, genuine, quirky, self-aware, and as natural as I have seen. What's on camera is the same as when it's off is my guess. You're real and just a good, funny, and interesting dude. Your companions are the living proof, from watching their channels and their progressive reactions. And that's so awesome. We all want deep inside these kind of experiences. Every video made me relive some of my travelling experiences, memories that I haven't touched in a long time. It's so effective because it's so pure. It doesn't even matter where you've been, or what it is, just some weird random connection opens up some of the highlights of travelling I forgot. And it's very informative and great promotion for the countries and people you visit as well! Ever thought of doing a livestream?

Fantastic episode! Trying on wigs with a crowd of onlookers was hilarious. That shop owner was definitely wearing one!! Then you hit up a stranger for a cig with the drunken "EOPPSeoYEO!" Followed by getting some footage inside one of these casinos. I've lived here ten years and never visited one. It was cool to see what they look like! Also, it's great that you randomly visit smaller shops that would never expect a waegukin to stroll in. Leads to some fun interactions and shows a real side of Korea no other channel seems to embrace. Good on ya!

I really enjoy your Korea and Cuba videos, very entertaining and informative! Having lived in Korea for about 5 years on and off in the 1980s, Korea has changed dramatically. The areas you enjoy with the older homes were mostly constructed in the 60s and 70s after they tore down the old, tiled roof homes. Displacement of families was an issue back then as well. Unfortunately, due to the skyscrapers being constructed they have displaced many elderly people which created a high number of elderly homeless especially in Seoul. Rents and mortgages are unaffordable for many on pensions which are minimal at best. I was stunned to still see the "Kay-goki" market. I thought those were outlawed prior to the 88 Olympics. Korean men believe eating it is an aphrodisiac. An interesting fact you may not be aware of; when most Korean homes were gated, a string of Go-Chu peppers used to be strung around the gate to signify the birth of a boy. Thanks for your work and safe travels mate!

@@whereisdan You are quite welcome! I could tell you some stories! Prior to the Olympics in 88, within a block of every major train station in cities such as Seoul, Taegu, Pusan, Taejon etc... they used to have "Ki-saeng" houses. In these small districts there were "shops" with large plate glass windows behind which the women would sit in fancy dress with numbers attached to their dresses. The Ajima would wave you in, if interested you picked a number and off you go... These areas that usually catered to Korean businessman and were posted with signs stating they were off limits to foreigners (Way-gook). Most foreigners did not know they existed. They were fairly classy streets, safe and the "off limits" restriction was rarely enforced. Prior to 2000 and all the exposure Korea has received, there were literally areas of Korea that reminded me of Sodom and Gemorrah. I remember one evening drinking with a gentleman by the name of Caligula...Lol.

The SimCityfication of Seoul is a shame!! I know some Koreans agree with it since Seoul needs housing and is the heart of Korea, but still, the city is losing its charm :( This also highlights South Korea's dependence on the Seoul capital area, which is certainly creating problems for the country and its other cities and regions Anyway excellent video like usual! You really went off the beaten path and showed us so many intricate things I didn't know about I saw quite a lot of ads while watching the video and let them all play through, I hope you will gain some monetization money from it!!

For Yakurt lady, you can call them as " Fresh manager" that has been called and named by HQ at Korea Yakurt Company. I tried it when I was in Korea, most of them asked me .... Wow,,,,, this is the first time they been called.. every Korean call them "Ajum-ma" instead "fresh manager"... believe or not, they love to hear from anybody on street.... Also, Most common word of cheer by Korean always saying is "Fighting" not "Hwaiting" whatever you been saying.... Take care Dan.

3:39 The Yakult ajumma (middle-aged women) started their initial activities in 1971 with a group of 47 members. Yakult Korea, with its flagship product Yakult, embarked on the idea of creating a door-to-door sales organization utilizing the spare labor force of housewives, with the goal of providing consumers with fresh Yakult to drink every day. This marked the beginning of the Yakult ajumma's journey. The absence of male personnel among Yakult's door-to-door sales representatives stems from a similar context. According to a Yakult Korea representative, "The decision not to recruit male sales representatives is based on an internal assessment that consumers may feel somewhat uncomfortable with male sales representatives approaching them, initiating conversations, and visiting their homes before anyone else." They further stated, "There are currently no plans to recruit male personnel as door-to-door sales representatives.

I know I'm going to get a lot flak for this but... I can't believe something that still exists in an advanced country like Korea is dog meat restaurants. You know these dogs are kept in a small pen all their lives exposed to hot summer and freezing Korean weather elements, never allowed to walk or run, only to be later brutally beaten to death for meat. I cannot imagine a life on earth worse life than that. I know KZbin channel like this focuses on the pleasant sides of Korea but I hope people don't forget the dark realities as well so that necessary changes can be made. Dan, sorry about this kind of comment. I enjoy your videos.

medieval times to mega cities in a short time -for Europe it took much longer - Korea has time-warped that in the past 140 years, China in the past 50 or so years. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJO1XoikhdF9fsk - for a glimpse of Seoul in 1929 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qamkeqWdgpd0eqM 1960 . Even into the 1980s when Korea started building for the 88 Olympics to prove it was no longer a third world nation - and those efforts were seen as a failure when bridges and high rise departments stores collapsed and ferries sank. K-Water, was another effort by South Korea to bring itself into the 'future' is likely being seen as a failure with the recent flooding.

i'm not sure why you are so against modernization. the conditions of those old buildings are so bad. mold, bad plumbing the list goes on and on. honestly, would you live in one of them? they razed the area right across the street from me where i used to live until earlier this year. they would protest in the middle of the night for hours. i know not why. mostly i think it's due to financial reasons. that and all the shops on my side were turned into real estate agencies. i live in a high rise now. it's not all that great either because the monthly fees are basically racketeering. not sure if i'm making some sort of point. i'm just rambling :). basically, i'm saying i understand both sides and korea has a long way to go.
