Just a little background, Henny (my partner/bff) came across a video from Earnestly Natural that she strongly disagreed with and reposted her video with a caption that was disparaging to Earnestly Natural. They agreed to go live together to have a discussion about what was featured. I joined the live just to add in my two cents and help to round out the discussion. Thanks for sharing. It’s great you 3 could have a respectful discussion. The closest earnestly natural came to addressing the debacle was her saying stylists need to take accountability for their clients’ experiences. Otherwise, she’s definitely treading lightly and trying not to step on toes. She’s still vague about her haircare practices/products/methods at least to me.

I think that's because she wants to keep those things behind her paywall. I went to her website, and I've never seen a stylist with so many webinars/trainings. I can't imagine dropping $200-300 on a class. I haven't listened long, but hearing her tangent on the natural hair industry conference, I feel like she is more concerned with the "business" and how to make money.

Ppl keep saying wash n gos are to show off your curl pattern (always in a negative tone) I just wanted little girls to see something that looks like there own hair and know that it’s beautiful. I have a niece whose hair has never been relaxed and that’s perfectly fine. I think styling your hair in any fashion is for “show” otherwise just comb it and go for maintenance.

The attitudes around wash n goes tend to be toxic... The perfect wash n go, the perfect definition, the constant battle against frizz and shrinkage the perfect product combination, perfect hair.....a lot of the wash n go fanatics ONLY like their hair when it's in a defined wash n go. Ppl blamed OG Natural hair gurus for them not liking their hair because everything was centered around a twistout. Relaxed women only liked their hair when it was straight and smoothed. Style preference is one thing but the insecurity around your natural hair just being as it is and not being good enough is concerning

True, and I realized I only obsessed about the definition when going to work- i wear my undefined wash and go to the gym, shopping, working from home - but as soon as i go into the office or on a virtual meeting i slick my haor back or have a super defined fresh wash and go smh I think we like the way our hair looks, sometimes we care too much about if other people won’t like it

My experience with my own hair, wash and gos are my lazy way out lol. Even when I plan to twist my hair or do something different, it all changes once I get in the shower. I will say though after wearing them for over 4 years, speaking for myself I got into a steady routine of what worked and never changed things even though my hair improved. My stylist pointed it out as well recently asking me why I was still using AG balance shampoo every week as it was too strong of a cleanser for my hair. But I’ve just been in my lane using what works. So I think we all have to continuously assess our hair and what the needs are with more education on when to stop using such strong shampoos, etc.

This would’ve been nice if this was a moderated type of podcast situation. I think it was a great conversation but she really needed to remain succinct in her answers and remain on topic which a moderator would’ve helped. It was hard to follow her at times plus with the audio issues. Despite all that this was a refreshing conversation between stylists and happy to see the professional dialogue.

Everyone has to understand the climate and tone of the discussion. Henny and I really didn't have the liberty of cutting her off or directing the conversation. The live was to allow her to voice her thoughts about being featured on our salon page in a repost in a negative light. Being that our side instigated this discussion and it being 2 vs. 1, we had to overextend the grace to allow her to fully express herself. Everyone, including myself, wanted this to be a fleshed out discussion and debate between different professionals but that wasn't really the intension here.

Thanks for putting this on youtube and for this discussion in general. Instagram is starting to piss me off. It deletes comments for no reason. Anyway, i wonder if naturals were still doing frequent wash n gos with leave in conditioner an/or oil with wetline and even eco when they were popular, would the level of damage be the same? I do believe the best way to retain the most length for kinky hair is to leave it alone(while keeping up moisture of course) and wash n gos just don't help much with the former You have to wash your hair weekly(and detangle thoroughly) and sometimes even 2 times in a week. This is especially if you're doing the anthony dickey method.

I think the leave in and deep conditioning definitely helped as well as not using harsh shampoos. I used the above things and my hair wasn't damaged. I needed a good trim because the curly cuts weren't getting all the raggedy ends, that was about it. For me a wash n go works for my lifestyle. I have been able to retain length but currently I got a cut because shorter hair is just easier to deal with right now for me.

​​​@@dimensionsbyginatrue. I think you have a point. I think deep conditioning often isn't necessary UNLESS you are manipulating/ wearing your hair out often(esp in a washngo) . If you're like most of narada's clients and not color treated, you won't need it. I think BGC telling people they could wear their hair out constantly using mostly gel and no leave in or oil but they don't need to deep condition was a huge mistake, especially when they are color treated. Probably if you wear your hair out 90% of the time deep conditioning biweekly or even weekly might be necessary to maintain healthy hair.

@iateyursandwiches I had color, so I deep conditioned and did protein treatments monthly. Luckily, my friend who I formulates conditioners told me the importance of emollients and how most gels don't have alot of them and since they didn't then the women should have been using a rinse out or deep conditioner that left emollients on the hair or a leave in. She saved my hair.

I realized quickly 2 years ago when I was color treated that not using leave in wasn't going to work for me. Hell, even white people with color treated hair need to use leave in for their color if they want healthier hair.

That’s the one avenue that no one has really talked about-the formula changes/discontinuation of WNG products that were working (in a healthy and manageable way) for a lot of people. And I’ve been waiting for that piece of the conversation, because it affects consumers more than it does stylists. Especially when WNGs are a part of your lifestyle (high frequency). Someone might not go to the salon every week for a wash n go, but they’ll definitely do it at home. But I feel like that the only folks that could really talk about that in an in-depth way would be the OG wash n go naturals. Pre-NOABs wash-n-go naturals. There’s been a LOT of products that have changed or disappeared due to people not understanding how WNG products work, or not accepting their texture, and those companies listened. AND companies have sold out and formulas changed. AND there’s been changes because of lawsuits. So the new generation of products work well for the people who were struggling with it in the past, but not so much for those who were fine with the old products. It flipped flopped, seemingly overnight.

With all the disruptions, audio issues, and even rambling at times, I think the conversation was still refreshing to have stylists who take two different approaches. My takeaways: 1. Any hairstyle can cause damage to a certain extent. 2. Great to hear that healthy hair was characterized the same way (no splits, no breakage, moisture retention, scalp health, behavior, or hair overall that's the Common Ground. 3. More pro-to-consumer education is necessary in plain language

I wore my hair in wash n gos for about a year. During that time, I had to get my hair trimmed every few months, and every time I got my hair trimmed, my ends were raggedy. It has really set me back from my length goals.

I was at work so I missed this. I didn't have a good experience with Earnestly Natural so I'm very interested in watching this. I found her way of speaking condescending to the extreme. She did teach me how to wash my hair thoroughly and i got a very nice detangling comb out of it, but I haven't been back, nor do i recommend her to anyone i know who is natural.

I’m strictly wash and go for the past few years after being twistouts for year and before that protective styles (my own hair) for years due to keeping it out of the way where it worked. I loved twistouts, but my scalp couldn’t take it; thinning and they weren’t too tight, too often, etc. I don’t manipulate my wash and gos, no refreshing just fluffing everyday. Wash every 5 days can stretch it to 7 but my scalp is like nah. Same reason I stopped relaxers because of my scalp. My hair is healthy, HOWEVER, I have kept it short so to Narada’s point the longer it gets (growing it out, maybe lol) I may see damage due to it being constantly exposed. However I am hesitant to go back to something that stressed my scalp 😬like twistouts.

I know you all get exhausted of hearing the same discussion but you have to realize that we are STILL all constantly getting the same questions around the issue. So it's not as if this situation is a "That's their choice" type of thing, many are still not aware.

I just found this page and switched up my hair care. I just started to incorporate heat into my hair because I was bamboozled to think “indirect” heat isn’t damaging. My hair was starting to show damage and breaking and slight heat damage and I’m glad I caught it when it did. I thought I just needed a trim (which I did ) but I never experienced split ends like that. The only thing that made me connect the dots was this page and rose Amelia. The conversation was a lot. The main point is the main point. But she’s similar to how I am when it comes to thought process and wants to give the whole story. What I would suggest is answer first and then tell the entire thought process behind what you’re saying….. yes I was great at essays in college, but I’m not much of a talker.😂 Oooo I can confirm acv made my hair look great, until it didn’t. I used to wash with baking soda as well, didn’t realize it was literally eating my hair until a couple years later. I had already stopped using it because my hair was getting very dry and not feeling regular clean like it used to when I first was washing and then rinsing with acv and detangling was literally the entire day. My hair strands had actual holes in them and was hiiiiiiiiiigh porosity. It wasn’t until 2015 that my friend said I should use more product to moisturize it, I listened, and it definitely helped. I was also constantly cutting my ends because they were rough and forever drying, knotting, and tangling up. It was about 2018 or so that I watched something on your page and you said use more water and less product and by then I think I had cut out all the damage from the acv and baking soda, and the under moisturizing for all those years. When I tell you that has changed the softness of my hair, it stays moisturized for at least a week , when before,by day 2 it would be dry, and saved me money(I use Oyin Handmade whipped pudding…. Not cheap but my hair loves it)! My product lasts at least 1 year plus and my hair is way longer now than it was then, not to mention I use the denman D38 and my hair barely comes out in the brush from the handful size I used to get( this had been normal for me so it wasn’t a concern) to about the size of a half dollar coin. My hair is in a much better state now because I listened to it and to people like you.

I followed her for a bit, but her personality was just too much. I even thought about taking a one on one class. The price was outrageous. She was marketing it as a life time investment. One class be set for life on how to take care of your natural curls. Then I saw her changing the script and telling her previous clients she had new improved techniques and should book another class. I also noticed when she began to tone down her personality and behave more polite and professional (marketing gimmick, I'm sure). I had to stop following her when she had a client showing off the new improved techniques that had less raking. Bragging about how quick it was. That hair was a hot mess.

Hi @okay5045! Before I went completely natural, my hair started to look straight due to iron deficiency anemia. It was crazy because the texture started looking permed and was falling out. I had extremely low iron. It was a bad experience.
