Buyer beware if you use the OneRS 360 1" edition for video in bright sun, anytime the sun shines on side of camera a large red reflection of sensor will appear in video on opposite side of camera in shape of rectangle. Insta360 support informed me it is inherent in camera design and to avoid using the camera in bright light 🌞 to avoid my video being ruined by the red reflection. Great camera though for images. OK for video if never in the sun or if in sun you postion camera in stationary location and point one lens at the sun to avoid sun shining on side of camera/lens. If moving around during video recording in the sun and turning in different directions (bike, skateboard, car) the red reflection will appear and ruin some of your videos if subject is in the rectangle area when sun shines on side of camera.

I think you’re referring to the lens flare- all 360 cameras will do this in bright sun unfortunately.

Hi Marcus, I have the same effect on virtual tours. Very disappointing. Especially because I do not have this effect with my very very cheap Elecom ocam-vrw01bk. (Cost me NEW! 70US$). In addition I have to say that there is no upgrade into quality at sunny light situations. In fact people who like to take shoots at bright daylight waste a lot of money by buying the Insta RS 1" 360° edition (so I did..:-(

This is definetly an issue. I've not had it as noticeable in my videos shot on the one x 2 as compared to the one inch. Sure there is some but it looks different and is much more usable footage I've found off the one x 2 if in bright light

I still like and use the GoPro Max - because I can mount it on a flat car and film trains as they go through a tunnel. All the other cameras are to tall and when mounted on a flat car the camera will not fit into a model train tunnel. GoPro is also great for rail-fanning. I am going to keep using the GoPro Max. How is X3 measurably better than GoPro MAX? kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYTXlYt4f56Wfbs I think you show a few times GoPro MAX having better video quality than X3, see example above for instance (aside from HDR, which is nice, though it underexposes the rest of the video) I hate everything about GoPro manufacturing quality, software, and useability. Unfortunately, it produces far better footage than X3 and... sigh, is about as good as it currently gets in terms of cold and hot weather performance for these types of cameras. I understand that this video is made with vlogging and less-extreme use-cases in mind, but I do feel that overall GoPro MAX got the short end of the stick in this review... and I say this as a GoPro hater. That being said - 1-inch is my new favorite, and has been added to the wishlist! :D

For me personally, the Insta 360 One RS was the way to go for an all-around versatile camera, especially for on-the-go personal use. If you're going for the 360 option, you will be buying the twin pack, so out of the box, you've already got some variety, and you can extend this by purchasing the 1-inch sensor. Admittedly the form factor of the One RS is both a benefit and disadvantage. Its condensed size makes it suitable to use as a traditional action camera as its smaller size allows it to be mounted without protruding; however, for handheld 360 shooting, you're really going to need to carry around a selfie stick.

I have an Insta360 X3. I bought it to create 360 videos to upload to youtube. I can't find any lucid explanation for how to do this. I have edited a 2-minute video on Insta studio and exported it as a 360 video and even transferd it to my Mac. But apparently I need something called a spatial video metadata injector or something. But that has not been updated since 2018 and won't run on newer Macs. Am I stuck? Do I need a Windows computer?

It is baffling to me that nobody is making 3D 180 cameras anymore, especially now that VR headsets are getting so much better resolution to be able to appreciate that depth perception and immersion. @@Octamed 100%. I very quickly realised 360 video is basically pointless for most VR uses. When you're sat on a chair or sofa, you aren't gonna be turning around. Much better to sacrifice that for the depth perception. It's so much nicer on the eye.

Best summary anywhere! I'm still on the X2. Too bad the RS-1inch doesn't have active-HDR and it won't be coming. You can probably recover highlights easier, though? It's best for actual VR. The X3 seems best for reframed action, because of small size, HDR and pre-recording, as well as best single-shot outdoors photo. When nothing is moving around, I can use mirrorless for 360 landscapes, I'm patient. 3D 360 is so hard though with a mirrorless, I'd love to see more info, but it's niche. Kandao often release half-baked products with issues, one can hope they'll learn.

I recall when the One RS 1-Inch 360 edition came out, there were some stitching issues if the subject was too close to the camera, like selfies or even shooting in a very small room (like a bathroom) doing virtual tours. Have they made any progress with that in firmware or editing software, or is that just the way it is?

​@@BenClaremont haha I was actually looking for a dash camera for my motorbike. There are nearly no options except for one for $100 that has video quality similar to cctvs of 1990s. Totally unusable. Can't see numberplate from 3meters. And another one for $300 which is good enough quality, but my whole bike costs $800, so it doesnt make sense to buy it... I would have still purchased it if it had awesome video quality, but it doesnt. It is just okay. Only these two options exist. So, I was checking for a cheap action cameras that has car-mode. Some are available for around $80. And thats how I ended up with your video. I think you should make more videos about other products too like dashcam, security camera or action camera. There are large number of options, but most of them are terrible. Many dash cams that advertise as 4k are fake 4k. Their actual sensor resolution is less than 1440p, and their quality is often equivalent to 720p, thus figuring out the cheapest actually usable footage camera is difficult. Anyways, I watch lot of tech videos and your video has unusually high quality presentation, comparing all products for its different specs, comparing based on price, comparing the flaws, and presenting all of that in an easy to understand fun way without wasting time. The signal to noise ratio in your video is very high. You should expand to more categories. Even for action cameras, there will be lot of videos for expensive high end options, but not much for the cheapest options. For my dash cam situation, I considered buying Insta360 RS due to its incredible picture quality even though its price is high, but then found that it doesnt have dashcam mode, thus not usable for my purpose. Meanwhile the camera I am considering now is SJCAM c100+ action camera which costs $80 but has dashcam mode, and thus it will auto start recording when power is supplied when engine turns on. It is fake 4k, but has usable fullHD footage.

the Qoocam 8k was super underwhelming with its overheating issue causing it to fall out of focus. Don't think i'd buy from them again unless they magically make the best photo/video 360 cam with one of the fastest workflows, best features, and no glaring issues as big like the 8k's overheating issue... Wish Ricoh would update their Z1 to have that dual fisheye plugin without having to go through that workflow just to get the quality.

Thank you Ben , You are the disseminator that I most appreciate and respect . As confirmed the insta only follows the direction of gain. I asked them if "At least" they made lens caps for the rs one 1Inch, but they answered me that since it's not a sport cam they will never make them, and to look for them from other third party manufacturers... However I have the gopro, the one r 360 and the oners360 1inch, the latter is the one I prefer for photos, the gopro I prefer when I ride a mountain bike.

Fantastic job on this video. I have two questions: 360 camera reviews and the manufactures spec never cover the minimum successful stitch distance. This is less of an issue with twin-lens cameras, but how close can you hold a book in front of the Xphase and still capture clean text? Also, can the Trisio operate in a sideways orientation? Useful in putting cameras into tight spaces like car interiors. Many rotating cameras can not drive their own weight when used sideways - how does the Trisio do? Would love to know those two answers. Your videos are the best!

Good review. There are three things so with the Insta360 workflow which I find extremely frustrating and everyone should know before buying one : you buy a camera specialised on 360 video… but… A) the (iOS) app allows combining multiple clips only in 2D? You can not combine 360° clips and export them as 360° video. Seriously? B) and this is not only a problem of the app… in Studio you cannot do the second simplest task in video editing neither : combining several clips with some very basic transitions (e.g. fade through black). C) you cannot export 360 video in the app in full resolution. The app limits (for no reason I could imagine) the resolution to 4K. In order to export in full resolution you have to use Studio on Windows. Sure, 5.7K needs a lot of memory and performance,… but my iPhone 13 Pro with 1TB has plenty of both… When I bought my X2 right after it’s release, I thought „maybe the hardware guys were faster then the sw developers and they will provide an update soon“. But still today, more than two years later, these issues remain. A lot of cool special effects for social media nerds have been added,… but the most fundamental gaps for people who use these cameras really as 360 cameras, have not been fixed. Very frustrating, … in particular as the hardware is great. And it’s not as if there are tons of 3rd party solutions you can use. Adobe Premiere works but is for non-professional application ridiculously expensive. Most other video editing solutions (Pinnacle, Filmora,…) that do have some 360° features are not exporting beyond 4K neither. In 360° footage that makes a real difference! I finally found my solution in using Davinci Resolve. Not very intuitive but once you get used to it , it does the trick. Thanks a lot to Davinci … And shame on you, Insta360 software department !

I still have the One X and I absolutely agree with Insta360’s software. I nearly upgraded to the X3 this Black Friday but I was able to resist for another year. Either they come up with the X4 or I’ll hopefully get the X3 cheaper. The One X I have is still serviceable but terrible overall although my friends just love my videos taken from it. So why change now? For my own nitpicking nature, I’m due for an upgrade soon. So glad I stayed away from GoPro, their business overall isn’t going well lately and abandoning 360 part made me confident of my decision to stay with Insta360 who seems to be doing really great at the moment.

At the beginning of last year I had an SC2. It was obvious that I did not meet the new standards for a virtual tour. Then I thought a lot about whether to invest in a new one. The choice was between 1" - Theta or Insta. So, the Insta360 won because of the price. I watched Ben's review at the time, and that was crucial for my choose. Qoocam 3 camera failed me on paid gig. Tested it on family trip and it was fine. Took it to use for client video and one of the lenses is recording in dutch angle and can't be stiched together at all in mobile app and studio. Due to ~-20 roll artifacts in other software made this footage unusable. Literally after 3 days of shooting it is broken already.

Some stuff here is a bit misleading, like the X3 does not record at 4K 60fps for its normal videos, it only does that for slow motion videos. It’s one of the reasons I’m deciding not to get it.

About my suggestion to Insta360 Technical Support to add Active HDR to the One RS 1-Inch camera, they said, "...so sorry to let you know that One RS 1-Inch edition doesn't have Active HDR mode due to the camera sensor difference. But we will forward it to the R&D team for further evaluation and they will consider it seriously." Somehow I'm not motivated to hold my breath on that one.

Thank you for this, it was a great help. I wanted a Go Pro to take on holiday in July. I originally thought a Go Pro Hero 8 at £199 would be fine but man math soon got me looking at the 11 which was £349. 360 cameras wasn’t on my radar until a couple of videos popped up on KZbin and here we are. Our main use was just going to be general holiday videos and a bit of which the Insta X3 seems to tick all the boxes. The X2 is only about £30 cheaper so unless there is a major reduction before we go away I know what we are getting. Thanks again for all your videos 👍

One thing a person must take into consideration is that with the insta 360x3 you must have a compatible phone or the camera won't work. A Samsung Galaxy A13 is not compatible! You will not be able to use the camera without the proper phone and its difficult to figure out

The colorteint on the X3 seems off. way to green'ish . look at your faceskin.. are you going HULK.? 8:17 At 8:35 the 1-inch by a big margin.. the ONE RS is a blurry mess on the grass and the back plants, and X3 is quite overexposed. IMO X2 or GoPro max for the second spot after 1-Inch that is a clear winner.. at 9:28 Insta360 X2 seems to balance dynamic range & high and lows the best, its the only one you can see the window-bars on both sides 9:28 and on all the windows (blown out on pretty much all the others) # pause 9:29 and zoom in at the windows... weird that Insta360 1-inch cant toogle the high & lows better with that big sensor. Btw, are you using the ideal modes for these cameas.. wasnt it the One RS that had a wicked good HDR mode, that you claimed were many times better then the std. m´video mode, and HDR mode was the one people should be using, same when pictures it shoudl be that special pro mode. // just took at look in your older videos.. it seems it wasnt the RS but the Insta360 X2 from here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4SqmaiFZ5unoK8 so did you use that "mode" when recording video and not a subpar std mode, and to make the camera performs as good as possible for its dynamic range, as you do say straight out, its many tiems betterr for dynamic range then the std video mode..so curious what video-mode your using.? and same with pictures.. was it the optimal mode, and not a subpar aut. mode if the camera can do a lot better in its optimise mode?

What an amazing video, thank you. Today I watched this video which was produced 1 year ago. In the last year has there been a update for the Insta360X3? I'm drawn to this model because of its high quality specifications, great all-around, amazing software package that comes with it and that I can edit on a PC. So, this would be my camera of choice but wondered if there was something recently that came out from Insta that had even higher specs but was basically the same thing.

We have the Insta 360 but we need a new 360 camera, for photography in the art gallery. So must be sharp when we zoom in on artwork and color must be correct. All shots inside. Sounds like Phase if we can afford it otherwise, Triste orX3 which are less expensive?

Now used the XPhaseProX2 for a few thousand images and agree on image quality. Much improved in outdoor shots compared to the X1 with less sun flare (even though different lenses add a lot to price).

Hey Ben! I'm on the fence between the Insta360 X3 and One RS 1". I'm going to be shooting during vacations for personal use and VR (to relive the memories). I'm also a camera novice and looking for something simple to use and output videos (and some photos). Everything sounds like the One RS 1" is the better call, but the high price is tough to swallow, and I wonder if the X3 is more novice friendly. Any extra thoughts you could offer?

12:23 I don't believe the Z1 is sharper compared to 1 inch. By the way, in another video you compared the sharpness of the Z1 to 1 inch and clearly 1 inch is sharper.

They are similar overall, sharpness is not the deciding factor between those cameras.

*broken record mode on* so frustrating that the Insta360 cameras cannot do gapless 360 recording like my GoPro Max. I want a modern 360 camera but not one that leaves gaps in its videos every 30 mins because that's no good for my workflow. *mode off* But I may have to bite the bullet and get an X3 anyway. I've seen that the QooCam Ultra will do 5.7k 60fps, which will be a first in the consumer space as far as I know and I am very interested! Just hope the camera isn't another foul-up like the 8k...

personally i dont like the new camera per year because it can get very annoying, like i bought the gopro hero 10 and as soon as i buy it a few months later the hero 11 comes out then its like well damn i dont have the latest camera anymore, lemme go buy that one. its just annoying or with the x3 i just got one yesterday and its like wow okay so i enjoy it for not even a year and there is a new one out, like yeah i get technology is advancing fast but like atleast give it 2 years so there is more hype built up yk? not like "oh cool another camera" its the same with iphone 14 i just bought one and the ihpone 15 just came out like cmon i cant even enjoy my devices for 12 months knowing im upto date just for another one to come out and makes me feel like my device is "outdated" i dont mean to sound a bit like a karen or anything lol but its just money spent every year for me i do use my tech until it needs to be replaced but in the back of my mind all i can think is "my device is outdated" but thats just my opinion

You should avoid all insta360 cameras. I suppose no one has read the terms and conditions and privacy policy? For a start in the terms it states you are signing up to a service, and the camera will not work if they decide to terminate the service, which they will do if you break and Chinese law. Also to use the camera you MUST use their app, which communicates with multiple Chinese web servers constantly, and if you try to block them with a firewall the app will not connect with the camera. These cameras are junk. Do your research before you invest 100’s of € on a service that relies on access to Chinese servers, where you never truly own the camera. I just bought the 1RS 1inch 360 based on you tube reviews, now I have a €1100 paperweight.
