there's absolutely no shame in taking 3, absolutely nothing wrong. i decided to take 4 subjects going into year 12, doing english lit, spanish, politics & philosophy. i quickly became absolutely overwhelmed so decided to drop the subject i disliked the most, aka philosophy. there are people i know who are studying 4 this year (13) and an EPQ, and have a job, and are planning on doing work experience etc etc. it's all about different minds
@UnJadedJade7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree 💛 it's highly recommended at my school (and the timetables are definitely geared towards people taking 3!), but I can understand why people would take 4. At the end of the day, I think I felt it better to do well in 3 and secure a place at a university I'd love to attend, than struggle or overwhelm myself with 4. I mean doing 3 isn't exactly easy either haha! Although I'll miss English immensely, the time I've already gained is really helping my stress levels and aiding with the balancing act of sixth form!! Glad you made the decision best for you too. Lots of love xx

I'm in Canada, and I am the same age as you, and it's comforting to know that the struggle with Chemistry is universal! haha I had a very similar experience to you; lots of stress, tears, and anxiety. Since I don't want to pursue sciences at university, I decided that it was the right thing for me to drop it. For me, it wasn't useful enough to warrant the stress and work I had to put into it (it is by far the hardest thing I've done!). But for you I think that when you get to uni you will likely be glad you saw the chem a-level through. English is mandatory for us, so I didn't have to choose between the two.
@UnJadedJade7 жыл бұрын
YES! I feel you. I completely understand, and particularly if it's unnecessary for your chosen career path, I think it's such a good thing you dropped it. I can already see the overlap for myself between biology and chemistry, and I know deep down I've made the right decision (despite missing my English class immensely!). All these big decisions are tough; and nothing ever seems to be wholly 'right'. Good luck with the rest of the year!! x

I 100% relate and know how you feel! I went through exactly the same thing and feelings last year, and to be honest they didn't really go away throughout the year... Everything happens for a reason though and doing all 4, as you said, would have been too much, but I get it's hard

I did exactly the same as you doing bio maths chem and English lit then dropping English. Hey Jade, I am from Germany and studied plantbiotechnology and horticulture. Last years in school besides math I focused on languages like german, english and french lessons because that were the subjects which came naturally to me and that I didnt need to put much effort in. I had a really hard time during my first year at university because I was eally missing the basic knowledge in bio and chemistry. I made it anyways but the whole time I wished I already put my attention to it during school. So...I think you did the right thing! Books are still my favourite but just for me, for my free time and this is great!

I would assume Maths is consisdered a Science due to it being a STEM (Science, Tech, engineering, and mathematics) subject. Is had the exact same dilemma in September too! I was doing Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Further Maths and got all As too. I thought I wanted to do Chemical Engineering but I went through year 12 hating chem and realising I just wanted to do chem eng because t was kind of relevant for all of my subjects, when really what I actually enjoyed best was physics. So I dropped chemistry this year and am SO MUCH HAPPIER that I have time! I hope your happy with your decision!

In a way I'm glad I did the subjects I did because I didn't have to drop one. I'm indecisive enough as it is. Here's what I did: Year 12 (AS year): A2 French (I had done AS French in years 10, 11 after doing GCSE in years 8, 9); AS maths and A2 maths; AS Spanish. So kinda counted as 4 subjects. Year 13 (A2 year): dropped French because I had completed A2 already; dropped maths as I had completed A2 already; did AS further maths and A2 further maths; did A2 Spanish. :)

I have always been an English person who loves writing, researching, and reading, and now I don’t want to do anything medical I changed Chemistry to English Language. If I want to do an English degree which is possible I could drop Biology and just do Lit, Lang, and Psych which I think is really nice.

i understand how you feel tbh. i just started year 12, and i had wanted to do german chem maths and further. there was a clash between me and the teacher of the maths, so i switched to the other core maths class, but i had to drop german to do it. german isnt relevant to whatever i want to do but it does make me sad because i had such a passion for german, but at the end of the day maths is 50% of my course, and i am glad i switched. a part of me will probably always regret not keeping it on but i know its the best decision bc i didnt want to do german at university, instead something science based

I stood in a very similar position having to choose between latin/greek and biology/chemistry/physics. I eventually chose latin/greek and even though I today after finishing highschool (it's called something different in danish but whatever) want to study molecular biology in uni, I have no regrets. Instead I am reading all the subjects I need for molecular biology now, and I really enjoy having been able to study both, because the humanistic subjects have given me such a great understanding of the world I wouldn't have had having only studied science-based subjects.

I started A Levels this year with 4 subjects (biology, chemistry, psychology and geography) and had a similar dilemma! I knew I couldn't cope with 4 and wanted to drop down to 3 by the end of September, but needed to choose based on what I want to do at uni (biological sciences/neuroscience). I'm really struggling with chemistry and loved GCSE geography, but in the end I dropped geography because I knew that chemistry would be invaluable! So I'm in the same sad situation as you rn 💕💕

hi jade! i absolutely love your videos, but being from the states I am always very lost and confused when you discuss A levels and GSCE and 6th form!! I've always watched them because they're incredible interesting and your drive and passion for school is so amazing, but do you think you could do a whole video explaining the UK education system? I would appreciate it so so much!!
@GreenTornado7 жыл бұрын
Catherine Turner The education system in the UK varies. In England, we do GCSEs, whereas they do something called "National 5" in Scotland (I'm not quite sure what they do in Ireland and in Wales). We do our GCSEs at the end of our last year at school (year 11). They are useful if you want to continue certain subjects to A-Level. A-Levels are done from year 12 to year 13 (so a total of two years), and they go into so much more detail in the subject and teach advanced concepts (hence the "A" in A-Level meaning "Advanced"). Our A-Levels are similar to your AP, but we don't do A-Levels to get credit for university (like your AP). Instead. A-Levels determines if we get into uni or not. I hope that helps.

Hey Jade! Just wanna say that I'm in the same situation as you (ish?) - I'm also in Year 13 now, and I did Chemistry, French, Eng lit, Psych and EPQ for year 12, hoping to study law with french law at uni. But because of a clash I only had three hours of french per fortnight which I wasn't very happy with because I had to do all the content at home so I (very sadly) decided to drop Chemistry and I felt exactly the same as you did - but we do really come through! I felt like my frees really help, I'm also the vice chair for our PLT so I have more responsibilities student leadership-wise. Good luck with more frees and responsibilities!!! ❤️❤️❤️

In all honesty, I dropped Biology because, although I enjoyed reading and remembering the theories, I have been having difficulties keeping up with the practicals and it does sound ridiculous to drop a subject because of just the practicals but practicals play just equally huge parts as the multiple choice questions and structured questions papers. My Biology teacher did mention that it isn't worth the struggle since, sure, there aren't as many universities that accepts students to study Medicine without Biology as their A Levels but there will always be exceptions. Especially if you can do very well with lots of effort. And to be frank, I have never felt such depth of sadness because Biology is my favourite subject but when it comes to the requirements needed for the career I want, I'd say a little sacrifice is needed. The good news is that I was able to focus more on Chemistry and because I already had an idea that I am ASTRONOMICALLY WEAK in Chemistry (mostly Inorganic), I have been feeling less stressed since I do not have to worry about Biology on my plate and focus on the great Chemistry, itself. Overall, it comes down to what you want to work as in the future. It can give a tad bit, clearer pathway to the subjects you should focus on. To those who will be sitting for the Oct/Nov exams, good luck!!!

Awhhh Amelia!! 💜 bless you, thank you so much for the kind words and support! Honestly, I surprise myself with it everyday. 100,000 is incomprehensible; even if I achieved it, I don't think I'd ever even be able to visualise that many people haha! Thank you so so much my friend xxx

Tbh your decision was pretty logical. I mean if you look at it, if you had continued with doing english literature, it would've not really been too much of use after you finish your A2s. Given that you do want to get into biology at uni. So sticking with chemistry was the right decision. Even though chemistry is pretty awful, I mean I dreaded at it just at gcse level D: Hopefully you'll start enjoying chemistry a lot more than you did last year :') PS: your videos are great :)

Uni's only ever ask for 3! It's very normal to drop one, I took 5 AS subjects and dropped down to 3, doing anymore than that would've been unbearable. It's too much stress doing 3, let alone anything more than that!

Omg I have to do a decision like that later in the year. I have to decide if I take a class with antic history, literature, philosophy and modern history or if I take a class with math, social sciences and philosophy. It's a really hard choice because for my future it would be better to take the second one but I am not really good in math and I love antic history but I don't know if I will find a job later... so yeah I have to think about it more ^^

You might find, after dropping a subject, chemistry becomes easier with the extra time you gain. You can always take an EPQ or additional qualification in English, if it is an extra passion you have! Good luck with your A2’s x

I think, if you want, you should start a book club and share what books you love and recommend to try and rekindle your love for English...? Xx p.s I'd love some recommendations xxxx

My sister is in her second year at Southampton university studying geography and hopefully I'll be going there to study history in three years. It's so weird how you tubers I watch are actually relatively close to me.

I'm going into year 12 in January (I'm from New Zealand) and we have a different system where we have to take the same amount of subjects as we did in year 11, but the sciences split and maths also splits into 2. I chose my subjects and I had to drop both Textiles and Music which I loved this year but I really needed to take all three sciences. Don't get me wrong I love the sciences but they're very academic. We have to take English and a Maths (I'm taking calculus) but my 'fun' subject is Japanese, but I'm doing it a year below through correspondence, so it doesn't actually count for anything so I'll have spare time in that class if I need it. Thanks for the video Jade ❤️

Focusing on what you really need is the best idea! Other opportunities for English will be available

Really chemistry is the easiest one for me and I never really have to try that to get A, however maths and physics make me want to commit. But biology was awful, to much content and the papers were a hit and miss, I would go from an A to E. I had to drop it and now life is easier

I'm visiting Southampton on the 14th (it's great for biology sciences, I'm looking to do environmental science). Could you mention your quick opinions on what you thought of it?

Hey jade! Could you do a curly hair routine? Adore your hair and wondered what products you used (if any) to define your curls. Thank you xx

I've just dropped physics and picked up French meaning I now do 2 languages at a level. I had literally been thinking about this since gcse results day. But I'm glad I did drop it, although still doing 4 a levels

When i got my GCSE results in August my heart broke because i got a grade 4 in maths and i wanted to do Sciences at my Alevels which meant i couldnt and it was so so awful but i dealt with it. So I just started Year 12 and i decided to go to a different school, i took English Lit, History and Pschology. I realised really quickly that i hated the school so i immediately started making plans to go back to my old school.. Then i found out that i was one mark off a grade 5 so i got it remarked. Meanwhile my old school said they would take me on their Biology course and oh my god i was on cloud 9 it felt amazing. So i switched schools and dropped History (i never really wanted to do it anyway). 2 weeks in i was finding myself dreading going to my English classes, so i then had the decision on whether to drop it and switch to a different course even though im like you, i love books and analysing and writing. Eventually i decided to start doing Chemistry, so i’m now perfectly on route to becoming a Vet like i desperately want to do. But my god, Chemistry is so hard. I understand your struggle on what to drop and girl ur brave for making that choice in the first place. I love your videos and they will continue getting me through my Alevels, good luck lovely :)
