Jess this was an amazing taste testing of some Amari. Delicious flavours and so fabulous in cocktails!! I do love the Campari and Fernet but it took a bit of time. They are wonderful. I learned a lot and enjoyed this very much!! Love Amari straight to taste. Cynar is delicious!! I really love them chilled in cocktails!! Loved this video!! :-)

Fantastic tasting Jess. I’m actually doing one myself next month and really liked your format. The checklist was a fun idea. Cynar is my ABSOLUTE favorite but I’m also madly in love with Amaro Nonnino. I’ve only really begun to dig my teeth into Amari when I started the channel, it wasn’t a big thing at my old gig. If I only knew then what I know now. Haha!

Hi Jess. I LOVE Montenegro Amaro. Since tomorrow is Mardi Gras, I watched your video looking for ideas so I could add something special to my Total Wine delivery. Not only did your excellent tasting convince me to add Amaro Nonino, I was treated to a bit of a philosophical exploration on the nature of amari. A metaphysical question of the form 'What conditions must be met for something to be a ?' is something my philosophy students consider in every class I teach. Kudos for exploring what makes an amaro an amaro and thanks for sharing your observations. I'll be trying Cynar next.

Wonderful to hear- thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! The thing I love most about cocktails is the social component. I personally don't drink very much- it's a completely social activity for me, and I love the way people connect and interact around food & drink. Exploring the ways in which certain spirits developed in relation to custom, society, and even physiology is fascinating to me! But philosophical interest aside, I actually recorded two more cocktails today- one with Nonino, and another using Cynar. Very different from one another, and both delicious. I hope you'll stay tuned and give them a try!

great video, thanks for that! FYI after tasting my way through all Italian amari on my last trip to Italy, I found Unnimaffissu to be hands down the best in the herbal/heavy/bitter category. (Which obviously is a matter of taste, but especially if you dont like anise too much, this is your choice) with Montenegro and the popular Averna (Averna sour on the rocks, ca. 3:1 parts Averna to lemon juice, being a VERY popular creation in my homeland Austria, especially with the ladies) being close seconds for my palate. Unnimafissu is hard to obtain so I'm not surprised it's not included here, but it is actually very affordable.

Wow! What a great overview. I think the only ones we've never really done are the Meletti and Cio Ciaro... they were very interesting to hear about. We're also massive Cynar fans, and my partner likes to make Torontos in the winter, so there's always a bottle of the classic Fernet handy. We also do Averna as a digestivo at a lot of the local Italian restaurants. I don't know if you'd like it any better, but we usually do it with a cube of ice and a lemon twist, and it makes for a perfect dessert for us. The other big ones we love are Vecchio Amaro del Capo and Varnelli Sibilla, which stopped showing up here ages ago. We've been savoring our last couple bottles of that, hahah. Thanks for this great tasting review!

Nice overview, very much appreciated! An overview like this would be great also for Vermouth Rosso, I think. As it is also a very varied and and confusing space for non-professionals. I have the Fernet, Nonino, Averna and Campari so i got the spectrum covered, i guess.

Since you like the Cynar so much, try Cynar 70. You will be in heaven! Ramazzotti is certainly delicious, but I agree it has a fairly common flavor profile. Easily enjoyable by most, for sure, but there are many others that bring that “something special”.

I have tried some of these amaros and even tried jaggermeister and jaggermeister manifest(way too smooth for me, like a smooth whiskey with some medicinal herbs added into it, not rly like it cuz no bitterness in it, kinda booring stuff xD, not to my liking at all). so far my favourite from everything i tasted so far is amaro montenegro. dunno why but i love the sweet-bitter combination of amaro montenegro with lower alchool percentage contained in it, it is just perfect, it is my top choice so far and i don't think it will change any time soon unless some better tasty products are released in the near future, thank you very much for this review, may god bless you and may you be very health and happy for the rest of your life. It’s an easy drinking bottle of Amaro. If you were to compare the world of Amari to the world of scotch whiskey, I would say that it is the McCallan 12 of Amari. It is not, however, the best. Montenegro is particularly unchallenging. Doesn’t mean it’s not great. Just not very complex.

What would you reccommend betwwen the Montenegro, cynar, and nonino?
@SavidgeKitchen
@SavidgeKitchen Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you plan to use it for. Of those three, my favorite for sipping on its own is the Nonino. Probably the most versatile is the Montenegro, and the most distinct would be the Cynar. If you’re just starting with amaro, maybe try the Nonino first. It’s one of the ingredients in a Paper Plane, and really is lovely in general. Hope this helps!!

Hmmmm. I’ve had every one of these and I’d have to say that I disagree with some of your flavor evaluations. You highlighted Melletti as being very floral and perfumy. I do not find it to be that floral. The one that really perplexed me though was you saying that Cio Ciara was very similar to Cynar. IMO, they couldn’t be more different, but I guess that’s individual taste for you.
