Paperwhite 5th edition (Standard) is the easy #1 pick. It's essentially just a slightly smaller, but more improved Oasis. In Canada all models are ad-free, and there's really no reason to spend the $50 on the SE unless, as Mike says, you're addicted to wireless charging, or plan on using the kindle for audiobooks and want the added storage. The only reason to go for the Oasis in 2021 is if you MUST have physical page turn buttons above all else. Side note, 3g support is pretty much useless nowadays. All phones can act as wireless wifi hotspots so you can connect your Kindle to the internet that way if there's no other wifi around.

I resisted a kindle for so long and swore I’d never want one. I ended up picking one up for late night campsite reading - and I love it so much! I use it every single day. I upgraded to the new 8gb Kindle 5 and the warm light and processing speed are worth the investment. 🥰📚 Your earlier review videos convinced me to give Kindles a try and I’m so glad I did.

I bought the new Paperwhite standard edition right on release and could not be happier with it. I am a big tech person so naturally I wanted the best option (Oasis) but couldn't justify the extra price for the buttons and a slightly larger screen. After having the new Paperwhite I do not feel like I'm missing out whatsoever. The warm light is amazing, screen is responsive and clear, and the USB-C is a HUGE upgrade from micro USB. The fact that the Oasis still has micro USB is a significant turn off. As for not having buttons, your fingers will generally rest near the edge of the screen so reaching over to tap the screen is extremely easy. If you're torn between the Oasis and Paperwhite, I genuinely have a hard time justifying the extra money for the Oasis unless you have an extra $100 burning a hole in your pocket.

I've just bought the basic White (no ads and no fingerprints) model. Given a choice between something that's going to be plastered with mucky fingerprints within minutes and something that won't be, the choice, for me is obvious. Plus, I just need a basic reader...I don't even use the built in light.....well, except for when we had a powercut a few days back! 😉📚

The whole point of the Kindle Oasis' design is ease of holding! lol I don't understand why you mention that it's hard to hold when the entire design was geared solely for comfort while holding. The regular Kindles have a small bezel around the screen which makes it hard to hold with one hand (every image for every Kindle shows the person holding it with one hand). People complained and Amazon designed the Oasis with extra room on one side to fit your thumb/fingers comfortably so they wouldn't fatigue/cramp. The cover make no difference in this regard and you can hold it just as easily with the cover open because it's only about the extra width. Again, it has nothing to do anything - not a bump (the bump is only there because they couldn't make the entire Oasis that thick or it would be too heavy and unwieldy), not physical buttons (my Voyage has them on the left and the right), etc. - other than giving you more room to grip it.

I have dyslexia and I have to say that ereaders like the kindle have totally changed my relationship with reading. I’m 46 and for most of my life I have hated reading because it was so difficult and slow for me. I could make myself do it, had to in order to get through college and grad school, but it was so exhausting that the idea of reading for pleasure was nonexistent. I could and often did do audiobooks but just sitting down and listening to a book just didn’t work well for me. Then my wife got me an ereader for Christmas a few years ago and it totally changed my life. Why - the ability to change font type, font size, and background color. Their is a font on ereaders called “open dyslexic” that was created specifically for people like me with dyslexia. The font is designed to not trigger dyslexic symptoms and I can tell you it works. The ability to change font size is a blessing as smaller font is a big symptom trigger, even with open-dyslexic. This was always an issue for me as I like fantasy and sci-fi, which tend to have larger books, which means smaller font. But with an ereader I can adjust the font to equate works for me. Finally the ability to change the color scheme is fantastic. For me a black background with white letters works great, really helps the letters stand out more, which again minimizes my issues. You combine these three things and now I finally enjoy reading. I have read more books in the past three years than I had in the first 43 years of my life. It’s a true hobby and passion for me now and has added a lot of joy and happiness to my life. I cannot fully convey how much I love reading now thanks to ereaders. So, if you’ve made it this far in my post, if you know someone with dyslexia or any type of reading issue get them a ereader. They might look at you funny at first but once they try the options (encourage them to do this as it took me a while to try these out of stubbornness) they WILL thank you.

I like my Oasis (2019). Much easier on the eyes compared to the laptop I was reading off of at night. I'm just glad the battery drain can be improved by putting it into airplane mode. Mike is right about getting the ads removed from it. I didn't find the ads annoying but wanted to get rid of them to make it easier to sell later. I hope the next Oasis has a foldable screen so that you can fit it into the pocket easier.

I'm watching this cuz of the Prime day sales, and I've never had an e-reader before -- it's so tough to choose between the Paperwhite, signature edition, and Oasis!! The page turning buttons might be the clincher for me, though the smaller/lighter and easier to hold Paperwhite is also appealing!

My library has been almost 100% digital for the past 6 years cause I've moved countries a couple of times and books take a lot of space. My boyfriend got me the Oasis for Christmas about one or two years ago or so and it's been the greatest experience ever, so worth it. I upgraded from a 2015 Kindle to this one and I love it. I just picked up the NEW 2021 Kindle Paperwhite today for the Black Friday sale 2021. I only paid $104.99 for it. I also chose the $21.00 per month for 5 months payment option to sweeten the deal. I upgraded from the 2018 Paperwhite that I still have which is still like brand new. I have never had any problems with the Kindle Paperwhite's and I have owned every generation. Anyone reading this today (Black Friday 2021) should jump all over this deal.

The Oasis has the glass instead of plastic and the aluminum instead of plastic. Also, the ergonomics are amazing. If you have the money, the Oasis is better. But, the newest Paperwhite is a heavy contender with minimal compromise. I own both. My Oasis is my home device and the more affordable Paperwhite is my travel device. They both rock.

@@moirad3504 I used to have the g3 Kindle, the trouble was having to use a reading light to read at night so I then got the Gen 5, 2012, Paperwhite 1 which I still have.. Even after nearly 10 years it is still going strong although the leatherette cover is about worn out, It has protected the Kindle really well which is still like new! It has 2Gb and has about 150 books in it with plenty of room to spare. Certainly the page turn is slow compared with the new Kindles but I never found that a problem, it is about as fast as turning the page in a 'real' book. I've just bought the new 2021 Paperwhite 5 which is only slightly larger than my old one, 2 or 3mm in length and about 10mm in width. The bigger screen and the warm light is great

Bought myself an Oasis after your last videos. I used to have a very old original Kindle and then the Kindle Fire, their first try at a color model with internet capability. Stopped using those and used my IPAD for a number of years and then was really tired of the way the lighting caused me to have headaches etc... Watched your video about the Oasis and I checked it out. Decided to make the plunge and treat myself. It took me a little while to get used to black and white again and the slightly smaller screen than my IPAD but now I love it. Primarily use it at night, reading in bed and I agree that softer lighting really helps when reading in the dark and then wanting to go right to sleep.

The older versions once had inbuilt speakers and text to speech was a standard. The newer ones can do something similar but it’s not quite as easy. I believe the kindle fires offer the best and easiest text to speech. If Text to speech is the most important, purchase one of the older models on eBay. I don’t know the last model but the ones with the buttons had speakers.

I resisted for such a long time buying an e-reader, 'not the same as a book", "I'll miss the feeling of turning the pages / the smell / the feel of the cover / the texture of the pages"... Well I finally my husband bought me one a little over 1 year ago because of space constraints --> he refuses to buy a house for my books. It was the best decision ever. Being able to have a library worth of books in my small purse without the weight is an incredible feeling, especially since I tend to read "big" hefty books. Being able to read in the dark before going to sleep is a considerable advantage. There are a ton of free e-books as well. I still love physical books, especially leather bound books, but I read more with my e-reader.

However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was very bright. Still not sure which to get.

This would be great for my kids and help me decide if I buy them new kindles for christmas or just let them keep using my hand-me-downs. As always thanks for your awesome videos!

Yes it does, That is why the Signature Edition has 32Gb as Audio books are very large files

I bought the new Kindle Paperwhite on Amazon for around 79.00 on special. My guess is that it will be that price or better on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Are you sure it was the 5th gen PW? I haven't seen it listed for that price on any trackers in the US or Canada since launch and it's always on backorder

When and how do the ads show up on the ad version of the new paperwhite? I've got the 2018 paperwhite and it gives me ads on my screen saver but that's it. Is it something more than that?

I always read that the ereader is easier on your eyes than a tablet whether you realize it or not. So wouldn’t a color kindle do the same as a fire?

much better reading experience. so much better. it doesn't look like a normal screen on iPad or modern phones. it has a different display type, not LCD or OLED. it is very comfortable on the eyes. try to get your hands on a friends kindle or go to a store to see one. i feel like it is worth it

I think people should be told about the ads situation: your kindle will have them regardless. Even if you pay to have ads removed, your kindle will have them on your homepage. This should not be hidden from people, Mike.

I'm definitely going for the signature edition. That wireless charging is a deal making for me. So convenient. Just put it down at night. But I'm probably going to wait until Prime Day. See if I can get a deal.
