Do you want to have a lot of fun both winning and losing in spectacularly hilarious ways? Then the Orks are for you. Do you want to kill your opponent's entire arm from across the map and be hated by everyone? Then play as the Tau. Do you enjoy using an unending horde out units to swarm over your opponent's forces and rip them to shreds? Try the Tyranids. Do you like using lots and lots of tanks and vehicles while sacrificing loads of infantry? Take a look at the Imperial Guard. Do you like heavily armoured units that can kill enemies from a distance or in melee? Perhaps the Space Marines are for you. Do you like the Space Marines but also like lots of spikes and deamons? Welcome to Chaos. Do you like slow moving troops that can destroy enemy tanks and infantry all while being practically unkillable? You'll probably enjoy the Necron. Do you like being a pompous pointy-headed toss-pot that blames everyone else for problems you created? The Eldar are looking for players like you.

#1 thing to know when you're starting out? Start slow. Don't buy a whole army at once. Instead, build one unit at a time, and finish it before buying anything else. A Start Collecting box should be about the biggest kit you buy in one go.

Why we all veteran players advise the same and most of us (not to say none) did that? :-D I mean, seriously, that's the best advice you can get. START SLOWLY. Assume rules will probably change just enough so you have to adjust your army list while you build it and paint it. If you buy all at once (like I did) you will end up spending close to 3000$ for using an army list that could have been purchased by 1000$.

Big true. I'm a noob, picked up the game half way through last month. Picked up the SC:CSM (reboxed CSM half of Shadowspear). Each model is taking like 10-15 hours to make for me right now if I want them to look the way I want them to (painting each part separately before gluing them together, primed, between 3 and 5 coats on any given spot on the model). The models are turning out really good, but it's taking me a while. It'll be a hot minute before I pick up a box of Apostles, Abbadon, and maybe heavy armor support. The SC box will hold me over for another couple months of painting based on how much free time I can put into the hobby.

Unless you're ultra-competitive and don't care about the hobby part of the game and get your models commissioned. But if you're in it for the hobby, buy what suits you even if it's weak game-wise. And then some began to take it seriously, and now you have people trying to sell this "but it's not THAT bad / we don't have a choice, really!" bullshit. And no, it absolutely ISN'T a "necessary evil" to protect humanity from Chaos. For new people (which I'm still pretty new october 2019) find out what kind of reason your doing the wargaming hobby for, be it painting and building, collecting, and or playing. The other thing, is dont care about one army being more or less expensive then the others, buy the thing you love (even if you cant afford a 2000 point army with what you love cause it's so expensive you can always slowly build it up over the course of a few months or a year and still play 40k with what you have, and have a ton of fun while doing it. 1000 point army matches are still super fun. Long story short I wound up getting a bunch of chaos stuff and not orks , but when I actuly did the math, because of the cool big daemon bros and tons of cultists I wanted it was within 100 dollar diffrence (was actually like 15 or 30 dollars for orks) and with orks I would've had waaaaay more models to paint and customize which is something I like to do, and my main reason for getting into the hobby; so make sure to find out your main reason and DONT RUSH, or DO RUSH. do what's gonna make you happy in the long run when you can play with all your sick ass cool painted bad mamajammas on the field. I also wanna point out that as well, the exact example of why Orks are expensive. if you wanna play at 2000 points (which is the standard at my local store) you need to buy multiple of the kits, but the [troop unit] 10 ork boys are 35 bucks and 10 CSM [troop unit] are 60 or 20 for ten cultists [troop unit] that you also need a ton of kits of for a whole army. So its 10 to 30 guys to make a troop unit but orks rules and cultist rules pretty much make them need 20 to 30. So 75 bucks or 60 not that big of a diffrence and when you consider the discount a local game store should give you when you buy bulk (usually 15%) it gets even smaller. Another thing to realize before you pick an army, is you can always eventually get another, and haveing 2 smaller armies is actually alot of fun, because then you can paint what you want and play at your house with family friends, or even... by yourself to practice and learn the game. Yes loner I know lol.

Things I wish I knew when I started.... 1) Airbrush....it is hands down the best thing to learn and own on the modeling side. You can paint 80% of your armies potential details with it...they can use cheap paints to similar effect as more expensive...where brush painting definitely requires high end paint. 2) most the items and techniques your grandfather and dad used for military modeling are far superior to stuff at a gaming store and painting classes taught there . 3)invest a good portion of your hobby time in terrain. Especially as a kid or adult with kids...it takes a lot less time to game at home vs setting up a game at a local store. 4)when building an army of a faction that has distinct sub factions with unique rules/models.....Make your own Sub Faction IE Space Marine Chapter, Hive Fleet, Ork Klan, Craftworld...etc...most sub factions still use a lot of the same models. You can buy or kitbash stuff to represent the unique faction units. Side note...as a kid growing up with 1st and 2nd edition...my space marine army had blood claws, 5 wolfguard terminators, 10 DeathCo and chaplain, 2 ultramarines tactical squads, blood Angel's devastator squad(I wanted that new plasma cannon so bad) and some crimson fist beaky marines. Also had the old school land raider, rhino, Land speeder and the big brick shithouse Furioso dread....I wish I had painted them all my own custom chapter. My point is that you can still indulge into some of the new spice and play with it using your custom army

When I first wandered into Games Workshop store I immediately homed in on Harlequins just purely for how awesome they looked... They were super easy and inspirational to alter and sculpt too, so much action in their movements and figures... a far cry from basically everything else on the shelves where you could pick from... dude standing there... dude standing there with his arms slightly higher... dude standing there with his arms slightly lower.... Harlequins made doing things like fixing them upside down doing backflips so easy to visualize and put together, and literally after my first model was glued together I was experimenting with using the ribbons on their clothing as the anchors to the base so that I didn't have to have their feet barely touching the ground. I was actually sorta miffed when I actually had to admit that having a whole army of ONLY Harlequins would be more trouble than it was worth and stuck to KillTeam games for like a whole year until I added Drukhari to the list too, they sorta work with similar sort of modeling potential and flexibility too.

It might help to think about how hard the models are to paint, and how much you will spend on paints. I was going to collect T'au first because their troops seemed relatively simple in style and would only need a few colours to look good. But there was a sale on AdMech. Admech are fairly intricate and there is potential for a lot of different colours when you start thinking about optical lenses, purity seals and the various bits of leather. Coming into 40K I'm glad I wasn't completely new to painting miniatures (use to play Dark Elves), but I am finding them quite a challenge to paint.

I'm just getting started and I decided to go with Orks for my first 40k army. Not only are they one of my favorite factions, but there's lots of awesome custom models and kitbashes people have made that you can buy secondhand at cheap prices. For example, I just ordered two custom looted Ork vehicles (a Rhino and Sentinel), two Mek gunz (one scratch built from different vehicle parts) and a squad of Stormboyz, all of it fully assembled and decently painted, for a grand total of about $100 when you factor in shipping costs. As an added bonus, it doesn't really matter if the secondhand minis clash visually due to differences in assembly and paint jobs because, well, they're Orks! Unique, ramshackle creations are the name of the game when it comes to Ork hardware.
@zacharynewman8974 жыл бұрын
"Space Marines are a relatively cheap army to get into". The key words there are 'to get into'. They're a very expensive army to COLLECT because of that extensive range and good ongoing support. They've got the biggest gap between having enough to put an army on the table and having the full range, and frequent model releases is a double-edged sword. Buy the full Dark Eldar range today and it might be five years before GW releases a kit that's adding something instead of just being a refresh of an existing kit. Do the same thing with Marines and you'll be out of date again inside a year.

I recently got in to the hobby and I got pulled in to playing Drukhari because I loved the look of the Mandrakes. Sadly I don't really have any in my army, but I've really come to enjoy the fast, glass-cannon playstyle of them faction as a whole. Experimenting using proxies has also allowed me to learn new things about the units in practical terms over just reading the stat line. It's how I learned just how good and fun Incubi are and they're going to be a major component of my army moving forward. So, on topic, yeah I agree with what a lot of people say, pick what you're going to enjoy owning and painting for whatever motivates you (look, lore, general playstyle, etc) as the rules can and will change.

Once you have an idea of your strategy, units, and detachments, use battle scribe to find out your actual build and points. This will hugely impact what units you will be using/buying/painting. Your points make up will also impact your weapon load outs, in case you don't want to magnetize the models. a side note on chaos daemons. the army lists are pretty much the exact same for W40k, Horus Heresy, and AoS (as well as kill team). The meta doesn't consistently impact "normal games" at all unless you pick a low-tier army, so specifically like Nids or Harlequinns. In any strategy based miniatures game its better if you look a bit deeper than which models looks the coolest. What I mean by this is look at how a certain army/team actually plays, some will be lightly armoured but fast moving whilst an other could be slow and sluggish but do loads of damage per attack. In the end the ONLY important things that matters is how YOU enjoy playing and that you have fun, but do you just want to steam in and rampage about or do you prepare lighting quick raids, getting in and out before your hit???? and these are only two of the many various strategic stereotypes so make quite sure you enjoy playing a certain type of way before spending your hard earned money , because you could have the coolest looking army with an amazing paint job, the whole nine yards, BUT if you don’t like how it fights you simply won’t get nowhere near as much enjoyment out of your battles. One simple and free but by far from sure way of finding out what strategy you prefer is to look at computer fighting games such as Mortal Kombat and street fighter, what kind of character do you normally pick. Please do not take this as a fool proof way of selecting a strategy, but it can be a very basic guide to how you enjoy playing and how your mind works. I hope this helps you in some way.

If youre really new to the game and looking to get your first army up and running go Space Marines. You can paint them your favorite colour. Ideally you want to take to the battlefield quick and start actually playing asap. They are a cheap army to get into, pretty forgiving being able to bounce back from rookie mistakes giving the novice player a chance to learn the game. And once you start expanding your starting force they can be taken in any dirrection making the army style you prefer. You can even if you so choose with minimal effort convert your army into chaosmarines and start adding in some chaos shenanigans. And you can paint them your favorite color. And them being the 40k posterboys you can rest assured your force will remain in the middle-upper range of strength for years to come. You wont suddently wake up and realize half your army has gone the way of the dodo. Maybe a model here or there might fall out of favour for an eddition but other armies suffer from whole units suffering that fate from time to time. Oh and did I mention you can paint them your favorite colour.
