I've only read a couple of pages of comments here so apologies if I'm repeating others but it's not just the strength of the knot but it's ability to absorb shock of a big hit. Appreciate that should be absorbed by the line (or should be depending on what is used) but there are plenty of immensely strong knots that will snap at a big shock load.
@Stinkybeard2 жыл бұрын
Im not sure that makes sense in this case as both materials (braided and floro) don't really stretch much or absorb any shock really on their own, not sure if the knot when pulled tight with materials that don't absorb shock or stretch very well is going to stretch or absorb shock very well. I can see this being the case if mono is in the mix and the test could be skewed because the mono is going to stretch and the knot may make it stretch even more?

I use the Crazy Alberto knot with my spinning rods 12# Nanofil to whatever leader I’m using for what I’m throwing and I’ve never had the knot break on a fish or snag. The line always breaks not the knot. It’s easier to tie compared to the FG so I’ve never tried to learn the FG. It goes through the guides real smooth. Great vid !
@Jojo619732 жыл бұрын
Alberto does not pass through the guides properly,but for me is the most strong knot as there is no line overlapping and when there is tension it only gets stronger and tighter. Never fails or slips.

I ONLY use an FG knot followed with a Rizutto Finish (I think half hitches are okay, but don’t like when they fray and may compromise knot). I land tarpon, snook, bull reds, sharks, grouper, amberjacks and FG knot never fails. Tied it so many times now that I can re-tie within a couple of minutes while on the boat. Shortest leader I will tie is about the length of the rod I’m using or longer...so I’m set for a 3-4 day fishing trip and do not need to re-tie unless if I get snagged or hung up on bottom. Lastly, this is the BEST line to leader knot that enables the angler to cast the knot (especially with longer leaders) through the guides without causing any guide damage due to the extremely low profile of the knot.

I see this is 2 years old. I would like to see the same thing done with the SC and the Yucatan knots in the mix. I would also like to see the knots after they break. Where a knot fails tells you everything about it's weakness. Can I suggest using sand? You just pour the sand in until it breaks, then weigh the bucket.

Not sure why people keep comparing old knots - the FG is clearly superior - end of story. And it’s not that hard to tie once you’re used to it. Fiddly, yes - difficult, no.

I 100% agree with you. As with all knots practice makes perfect. The more you do it the easier it gets. FG best knot for braid to floro or mono you can make
@slimjimmy2293 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! I spent a winter learning to tie the FG. Once proficient I gained confidence by fishing for river sauger and walleye. I now have 100% confidence in the FG knot and can tie it in about 3 minutes. I do secure the tag of the braid with a little bit of super glue to stop the knot from unraveling over time.

Ever tried tying fg knot while in a boat bouncing in waves in wind when its raining and your hands are almost numb from cold ?fiddly..definitely..difficult...very much so
@slimjimmy2293 жыл бұрын
@@kristopherwiita4509 Does 25° ambient temp, 35 MPH wind, sleet and snow count? If so, yes. Still about the same, about 3-4 minutes. Learn to tie it with your braid looped around your reel handle. It waste more braid this way but you can tie it under your console or huddled behind your center storage lid out of the wind.
@mmmbass60683 жыл бұрын
@@kristopherwiita4509 I don’t ever see those conditions, but I can tie it sitting in a kayak. I tuck the leader spool under one leg, then twist the braid and manage tension with thumb and forefinger. It can be tied pretty much anywhere this way, in most conditions. Even if it takes longer than usual, it’s worth the time. If you don’t need a super slim connection, just do a double uni.

FG is a pain with ultralight line. Try it with 4lb leader to 6-10lb braid.
@adamb3063 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I will say if you're struggling, anchor your braid on your right pinkie finger to control the tension on the mainline. You have to manage a lot of different tensions to get the knot to sit right while you're tying your wraps. Having it there allows you to not only keep it tense, but position that tension at the right angle to snug down the wraps as you go. As with any of these lots of practicing is the answer!

A couple of things: In the olden days, they determined the pound test of a line by tying on say 10 pounds and on slack line dropping it 1 foot where slack is gone. If it held at 10lb but broke with 11lb, it was 10 lb test line. Is that still how they still do it? And, if it is, why did these lines break with only 5 pounds? Also, did they break at the knot or somewhere on the line?
@sandworm552 жыл бұрын
I've seen knots measured in %s of remaining line strength but with that I've seen FG at near 100%. I would assume the line it's self would be able to hold it's test but I'm not super knowledgeable on that stuff. But to second above. Where did the line break ( Was the line wrapped odd on one of the dowels making a stress point?) But also repeats would be better. Any science needs repeat testing.
@hyakkimaru67092 жыл бұрын
It's kind of like a rope. When you get a knot in a rope it reduces the strength of the rope at that point due to the bends/kinks on the rope by a certain percentage. Just like with tree work. We always use a bowline knot. Out of all the knots, it doesn't reduce the integrity of the rope as much as the other knots, and it can be untied most of the time even after being cinched down to ridiculously tight. I would like to see where the lines broke as well.
@jackmasters99533 жыл бұрын
Try the six times though surgeons loop knot. I’m curious about it’s breaking strength. Thanks for sharing your results 😃
@ikashibimauler3 жыл бұрын
Nowhere close to the FG knot. Maybe 45% break strength. I'm not sure what happened with this guy's FG knot, but during my practice and testing I routinely break lines tied with them outside the knot. Mainline break which signals 100% line strength retention.

I stand corrected , after more research and learning I was tying the FG knot wrong I’m going back to it. Thanks for the video. God bless.

The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.

Depends entirely on what kind of fishing I'm intending on doing, just catching any and every fish on 10-20lb light gear, I'll keep tying the good old double uni, never been broken off at that pound test, anything higher than 40lb, I'll tie the FG knot just because I feel like it doesn't get caught in the guides as much as a big old double uni, but for smaller lines, there's no need for the strongest knot, you're not going out to catch 80lb tarpon on 10lb gear, or at least you probably shouldn't be, and unless you're targeting Bonefish or hard fighting Jacks, you're not gonna find very much in the 20lb class that'll overpower a double uni knot.

Just before you added weight to the double uni bucket, it's lip was resting on the Albright bucket, thus adding more weight to the Albright bucket. Disclaimer: I'm partial to the Albright. Also: I am thinking about switching my leader ties to the FG knot. As for joining 2 lines for a top shot or additional line, what would be the best knot that will not make a mess in the spool?

Hello, is it possible to have a test with yucatan knot and surgeon knot ?
@mistertwister181611 ай бұрын
The Uni starts to lose (badly) at lower test. Fishing with 4 Lb braid to 4 Lb or less fluoro (or mono), braid cuts the fluoro within the uni knot rendering it useless. Moving to a knot like the Alberto, where the load-bearing section of braid wraps around 2 sections of mono/fluoro, improves knot strength. I don’t test with buckets. Instead, I just test with a loop made from 1 section of braid and 1 section of fluoro. The ends of each section of line are tied together (braid-to-fluoro) to create a continuous loop containing 2 braid-to-fluoro knots. When this loop is pulled to see which knot wins, Alberto or Uni, the Alberto blows away the useless Uni. It’s great that some like the Uni at higher test, but my experience is that I’ll not waste my time with it for light line. Let me know if you disagree, but please do the test as I describe it prior to doing so. My thoughts…

I like the FG knot when I'm fishing ultra light with micro guides on my rod, it just goes through easier. On my rods with bigger eyes the double uni is my go to, but my experience is that it tightens up excessively after a fight with a large fish or log, and should probably be retied after that.

after practice, the fg knot becomes really easy. but if i’m in a rush, double uni all the way. i can straight up tie it in 15 seconds

Agreed

Wow 10lb braid to 10lb fluoro and maximum of 6lb until breakage?! It really shows how much the drag and rod does for you when landing a 10lber!

69 59 exactly .. I expected it to hold at least 8 lbs... that’s kinda why I wanna do this experiment again

He probably should start testing his line choices too because with good line, he will get much higher results. Also he doesn't say where the line breaks but that will give a hint where to start probing.

Missed the PR Knot from the test - very strong - but you need a bobbin to tie it properly

I’d like to see the uni go against the blood knot if you do it again.

Thank you, I will write that down

It took me FOREVER to proficiently tie an FG knot. Now it's pretty simple, but relatively more difficult to tie
@DishesandFishes3 жыл бұрын
Right. I will be tying it after this

The FG Knot is very easy and quick to tie, if you use the finger-triangle-method. I usually tie it in around 1/30 - 2 minutes- anywhere- the coffee shop, at work, at the tackle shop, on my way to the shore.... No help, no tools, no assists. I've been fishing for 5 years, and I've not used any other mainline-leader knot since. I can remember the last knot I tied to connect my mono to my braid, was a Mahin knot- and that was about 5 years ago. I am curious though... which is why I'm watching this video. My guides on my rod are where I WILL NOT compromize... but I've heard the Albright is almost as thin as the FG? That's why I'm curious. It could give me an option at lower diameters....

Got buckets but didn’t use water as a weight? Also 5lb?! How many turns did you do?

The fg knot technically isn't for bass fishing its for salt water and larger fish. However the bass community has somehow adopted it as a good bass knot which is dumb. A well tied Albright knot is just as good for bass
@joshuaswanson30683 жыл бұрын
Did you lubricate the line when you tied that double uni ? If not it could of been compromised
@DishesandFishes3 жыл бұрын
Yes

Just a suggestion. Could’ve filled the buckets with water and see which can hold more water? And convert the amount of water to determine the total amount weight at breaking point.

The igfc tested this a few years ago and the gt knot failed the least after many, many tests.
@cedriccalvert72643 жыл бұрын
Most of these KZbinrs don't tie the GT correctly. You have to double the braid with a Bimini Twist and tie it with the braid under tension. It's actually pretty easy to tie after you've practiced it enough. 😂
@michaelhall54293 жыл бұрын
@@cedriccalvert7264 even the worst style of gt knots still out performed other knots though so you can do it poorly and get away with it. I don't always do double braid if I'm in a rush or feeling lazy and I've never had that knot fail.

well whatever floats the boat aite.. many types of knots for many types of fish . win win yeay 😅

Double blood knot with 9 twists each side is easier and faster to tie for me and more importantly I can look and see that it is perfect without having to find out the hard way. Plus it is no larger than an FG knot.

Cool experiment! Thanks for doing it. Out of curiosity, did you do this experiment more than once? If so, did your results change?
@DishesandFishes4 жыл бұрын
chris the first time I filmed it, I made a mistake and didn’t have time to restart the experiment. So I had to redo it a second time and this was the result. I plan on doing it again in the future

I use albright never had it fail on me before but i would like to get more proficient with the FG knot because its so slim

SC knot way better than any other knot. Maybe you can try it next time. Thanks for the video.
