I have a bottle of BSI that I brought from California to Indiana in 2017. Just used the last of it today (2/10/2022) and still worked great. None of the hobby shops near me sale it, so I am on the internet looking for it. Big favorite of R/C people for gluing rubber. I glue rubber bands together just to see people try and break it.

Several points - not being critical - hopefully helpful for your next round of testing. 1. I noticed that the first joint was not square, this puts some torsional forces on the joint that the others might not have. You need a better way to get a uniform, square, smooth cut. 2. When making the bonds, consider some sort of jig that ensures the bonds are made uniformly. 3. For the sheer force test, the force needs to be linear - not cantilevered at 90 degrees. 4. For measuring the force, consider replacing the weights with a digital fish scale. They can be had for pretty cheap and you will probably find other uses for it. 5. You need to run the endurance tests multiple randomized times to average out other variables.

I like and respect your rather more scientific and accurate suggestions for a more focused and accurate testing environment. I didn't even think about any of these sorts of variables - it's always nice to have someone see & point out things I didn't catch or think of myself first! I think this video should suffice for the demographic I think it's targeted at though. Average Joe type craftsmen maybe? Not sure exactly. But now I want to see the more accurate lab testing of all these glues lol

I used to use "hot Stuff" by Satellite City, which IMO is still the best CA glue made, but changed to Starbond Thin about 5 years ago due to it costing less and swear by the stuff. Not only is it a great glue, but you also get the extra nozzle AND the fine tips too.

I make my own activator. 1/4 cup of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. I put mine in a little pump spray bottle.

Interesting because I use Ca glue a lot in my wood turning, mainly I have gone online and bought the best volume/price from that big overseas country. A local well-known Australian retail outlet of just about everything has an advert that made my eyes water, a 2 Oz bottle ZAP Thin CA made in the USA for AU$100.00, yes, one hundred dollars for 2 Oz. A check online had many adverts for the identical Zap 2oz for AU$21.00, a huge difference, but still very expensive. The CA I buy cheap overseas is less than AU$5.00 per 2oz bottle, even cheaper buying 3 or more bottles. It does all I need, never failed in any application. I am an R/C plane builder of many years, so have used a lot of Ca glue in my building big flying machines. The cheap stuff works just fine. Thank you for sharing your tests. I’ve had good outcomes with both BSI and Zap a Gap for RC plane building (balsa wood). I prefer Zap a Gap thin over BSI. BSI is super thin and I find it runs all over no matter what tip I use, Zap a Gap thin has more viscosity and is easier to control. Either of their medium and thick are good and similar. Both are priced similar.

The polymerization reaction of CA occurs by heat and exposure to moisture in the air. To prevent your bottle of CA curing on you before you use it keep it cold and dry. I buy 8oz bottles of BSI Instacure and keep it in a ziplock back full of silica gel (pure silica kitty litter) in the fridge. It never goes bad on me after years. Save money, buy the biggest bottle and keep in in the fridge in a ziplock back with desiccant. BSI sells small 1/2oz, 1oz and 2oz bottles and replacement tips and caps you can fill from the larger bottle for every day use. Happy finger bonding everyone.

By having the glued joint completely over the edge of the of the board, you would be testing the bond more directly. Having the joint on top of the board is more a test of the sheet material as the joint is protected from maximum sheer forces by vectoring the weight into the board. I could be wrong but I'm drawing on my past materials testing experience before I retired from being an Industrial Design Engineer. I would really like to see this tested in the configuration I suggest as it is a more accurate test of shear strength. I do appreciate the information as I find myself using CA more these days...usually with an activator. Some prefer amine, some prefer moisture. Another possible testing regimen?

Try LOGO instant. Best Super glue by far. Made in Japan. In my experience Locktite isn't as good, not even close.

I haven't used the Bob Smith CA glue but have used the Bob Smith epoxy with very satisfactory results. The company JB WELD has a CA glue that works well but is hard to find unless ordered online (where you pay an enormous shipping cost). I'm going to try the Gorilla CA glue which is sold locally and see how it works. I use CA glue mainly on wood i.e., patching screw holes, dings, replacing inlays, and securing frets in stringed and fretted instruments. I keep mine in the fridge until it's opened. A renowned string and fretted instrument repairperson told me to keep it in the fridge, but not to put it back in the fridge once it's opened. So far, so good.

I work in the rock and lapidary business and we use starbond almost exclusively. We use the thick as a gap filler pretty often. Starbond thin is great for getting deep into cracks in delicate fossils, rocks, etc. It's works about as well as paleo bond but is way cheaper. Never use medium tbh. Also we use a lot so the bulk bottle is nice. I may have to give Bob Smith industries a try though.

One guy had it tip over and glue his gasket shut, had to rip it to get it open. He said to plunk the baggie with glue in it into a coffee cup to keep it from tipping over and leaking everywhere.

Starbond is the only CA glue accepted for warranty work on most major guitar companies. Not for body repairs except for cracks or slits in the tonewoods. It comes in different colors and 10 thicknesses along with a flexible. They guarantee “made in the month that you purchase and it’s cheaper when you get larger sizes (16oz=$3.28@oz). With wood, ceramics, metals... hold time is about 20 seconds and totally cured in about 10 minutes. But, they sell a spray accelerant that makes it instant. Big problem is the thin is less dense than water a will run down cracks in a mirror or glass pane. I have, without knowing; had it run down to my fingers and glue my fingernails to the surrounding skin. It takes a few days of fingernail growth before your fingers feel like a 24oz hammer smack and mine were bright red like the gout on your toes. Very painful but that’s just the thin. Now, I wear gloves every time and keep my hands above the work. Oh yeah. you can put a drop of thin on a hole or low spot or anything you want to be stronger and add, baking soda (instant bakelite type stuff, shatters with a hammer. Add graphite to the thin and it’s solid graphite. Can’t bust it with a hammer. Aluminum grindings, steel grindings... If its like powder, even coffee works; it seems to molecularly bond it back to a solid. I’m not affiliated with them in any way and if I could have found somebody that was when my fingernails were glued; I would have choked their air off.

It's definitely Starbond. Every pack comes with a ton of extra supplies that you can use if the nozzle is clogged - plus they offer a free replacement if it dries out. I don't remember having to throw out any of my bottles from Starbond. Highly recommended!

I was a BSI user for years, but you hit the nail on the head about it drying out over time. I recently switched to Gorilla Glue and have been really happy with their tips as they really do a great job at staying open and clear, the lids seam to create a multi contact type of seal and the glue doesn't setup inside the bottle. I have had a multiple bottles last over a year. Have been very happy with it. I have heard good things about Starbond, so might give them a go next just to check them out. Starbond has a 30-month warranty to not dry out as long as you keep it at 40 degrees or cooler when not in use. Also, Starbond has an Accelerator you can buy as well that cuts the pressure drying time down to between instant to 10 seconds. That way you don't have to sit and hold a piece with pressure on it for 30+ seconds. If you need more time to adjust the piece you just use the Starbond without the accelerator.

I love the gorilla glue gel, I'm no professional at anything, I just use it around the house on multiple different projects I am or have worked on and it hasn't failed me yet. Not sure about the other gorilla glues but I know the gel has a little metal needle type piece in the top of the lid that plugs the hole when you screw it on. I learned this from trying to force a push pin into the top of the lid for the same effect and when it wouldn't go through I was like what the heck & after further investigation I noticed their needle type tip up there 😅

The biggest problem with attempting to find the “best” is the myriad use cases and potential combination of substrates. Some work better for stabilizing punky or porous wood bonds, while others work much better for instances where the bond will be subjected to vibration. Some tend to fail if you try to add colorings or pigments. There are also times when the better choice is 2 part epoxy. Also, the amount of pressure applied during curing… I believe the better shot is to select a few real world scenarios, in order to see how they compare. As for drying out, I have found that all of the brands I had purchased in tubes had a terrible shelf life after opening. I have several bottles of Starbond that have been open for 2+ years and are fine. Also, several brands are available in 16 or 32 ounce bottles, where the per ounce price can come down to under $3.

What a great review and Its beyond me why some of the `experts` below are slagging it off. Each glue was tested with exactly the same material in exactly the same way using manufacturers specs.....not laboratory conditions.. but hey....you`re not exactly testing a jet engine are you. As a professional antique restorer I`ll be going for the Bob Smith Industries as I use a fair bit of this.

If you are having trouble with curing in the bottle try throwing the ca in the freezer. It won't freeze but it also won't cure in the bottle. Be sure it is clearly labeled though Lol.

Hello! Excellent video here I stumbled upon (OK, not for *everyone* entertainment-wise, but I’m a geek and like to learn, see how much sticks! In the next week (sorry for time crunch), I’m planning to assemble a boxy, wooden/compress-wood, nicely squared suitcase and make it a full portable video game suitcase, including an original SEGA Dreamcast and 17” flat panel LCD monitor. My plan has been to use Velcro brand Industrial Strength (up to 10lbs and place 1”x1” or 2”x2” square adhered to the corners of the monitor (under 10lbs), not blocking vents, and similar for the Dreamcast unit 2-3lbs), and have 5ft of 2” 10lb adhesive back Velcro, and for other light things (cheap PC speakers, a featherweight VGA adapter to attach the DC to PC monitor, a new surge protector power strip, and keep some other ideas to keep game disc booklets and controllers in place). Questions: 1. Would it help to sand the fairly coarse surface inside the suitcase, or would the rougher texture bond better? 2. Should I add a couple drops of CA glue to the adhesive backing on the Velcro before attaching the Velcro? 3. Velcro squares in corners or thinner strips across the top and bottom? Horizontal strips would give more surface area to cling to, right? Or 45degree angles? Or likely irrelevant as nothing crosses 10lbs. The Velcro should provide enough gap if needed to allow unpowered airflow when the lid is open, if needed. May help cushion internal bits like the tiny screw for the DC’s disc reading laser: if it’s a hair off, no go and people assume they’re toast. Tweak the screw 1/16th-1/8” either way and they spring back to life. The screws are usually factory built with what looks like red Locktite (just a droplet) to bind the metal and prevent the screw from budging, but that was 1999! Should I add a dab of something when I double-check the calibration (like Locktite). I’ve re-calibrated 3 dead machines successfully, and the color of the factory droplet is a nice marker to know your in the ballpark. And tips from anyone always welcome and I’m grateful! May even have room to add a RPi and/or Roku! For rainy days on vacation! Just set the case level, open the 90dg hinged top, use an extension cord if needed, and play on original hardware anywhere! Pop the top, 1 power cord I’ll make a notch for to prevent crushing it, and 4watts of “hey at least it’s audible!” Stereo sound in a 10lb total solid case with latches and a handle!

I've been using loctite since the 70's but as the price went up I've started using noname brands. The preformance is about the same for all the traditional CA glues. The gels seem to do worse in my experience. The worst experience I ever had was the UV curing CA glues that were a fad a few years ago. Since I don't use it by the gallon I prefer the more traditional tubes. With the bottles it seems like the next time I need it the nozzle is so clogged, I end up throwing it out. Lately I've been buying the tubes from Harbor Freight. It's like 4 for $1 and works just as good as the rest.

My understanding is that Bob Smith Industries has been making cyanoacrylate glues for longer than just about any other company, and after supplying glues on a wholesale basis to everyone else, the company decided to sell great, high quality CA glue under its own brand name. I look for the BSI label when buying CA glues.

Store your unused glue in the fridge. It keeps a really long time in there due to the cool temps and low humidity. I've been using star bond medium for my RC tires and it seems to hold up pretty good. Just wish the sides of the bottle weren't so stiff so it's easier to apply small amounts. I really liked their "thin" glue as well. It sets super fast and holds really well. However, I had 1 mishap with a bottle when taking the cap off and putting the nozzle back on, I bumped it and it dumped all over my workbench... which sits on carpeted flooring in my office. Luckily, I was able to contain it to just my bench top, but it's so thin, that it runs like water and that could have ruined my carpeted floor. Now I use their medium. One other nice thing with the starbond is the fact that you can take the tip off the bottle, put the cap back on, clean the tip out with acetone and put the needle cap back on the tip to store in the box with the glue in the fridge. The BSMI doesn't have that or I'd likely buy it instead since there's a "rubber infused" version of it that is supposed to be really good for RC tires. I think starbond has a similar type of rubber infused glue that I may try when my current bottle runs out.

After watching it I'm not sure I learned much other than to avoid the slow Loctite product. Who glues styrene with CA that wasn't a styrene specific CA? I'm an RC airplane builder and do some woodworking. I use CA when I really need a quick glue cure but by far prefer a wood glue for most and epoxy absolutely necessary. For styrene plastics I use styrene specific solvent type glues. Your "shear" load testing was not shear at all but bending moment testing. Shear would be one piece sliding against other parallel to the glue joint. True shear loading and tensile loading would have been more beneficial. The ideal test material is one that is stronger than the adhesive but only very minimally flexible.

Interesting, but.... Polystyrene is the same plastic used in model cars. How does standard model car glue compare? Epoxies? Also, how does super glue do with other materials? Which is the better all-around glue? Are we fated to to specialty glues? Does anyone want to take the challenge of an exhaustive test? The info could be priceless.

I have been using CA glues for decades. Never use accelerators. I've never seen any tests, but have been told that activators can make the glue brittle. Been using Stick Fast brand for years. 4.5 oz for $11.00 It works great.

I gave you your 800th like. But what I found is that common wood glue does the job for a fraction of the cost. it’s a fad from what I’m seen. Proof me wrong…. And btw, it’s superglue. Lol.

Don't forget that Starbond has a guaranteed thirty months shelf life for their clear glues if they're stored before and after use in a refrigerator or freezer that's under 40°F.

I have never had any luck with the gorilla glue. I had to glue two plastic pieces together and it didn't even last 3 weeks

I buy single use super glue in 5 packs at the dollar store. Per ounce the clear winner considering you are guaranteed to get 5 uses out of it which is 4 more than all the others. Also it is hot and miss as far as bonding goes . I'm sure if you did this test 10 times that you would end up with 10 different results. I have conducted my own comparison of gorilla vs loctite and crazy glue and found loctite to be the winner as far as strength but it is hard to get the exact same amount in each test. Also sometimes less is more especially for strength

I can't even begin to say how poor these testing methods were. Adding and removing the weights produces stress on the piece. You can say that the same method of testing was used for all samples but not all the weights were put on gently. You add in too much human interference. A bucket gently hung off the sample and then adding sand at a slow rate until failure occurs would produce more accurate results. Then just weigh the bucket. Another thing to mention is what's the point of showing you adding weights if you are adding them to the bottom where we can't see. They could be touching the floor or laying against something like the heavy weights were. The big weights were obviously not hanging freely as they were completely still when you let go. Also, the clip you used to attach the rope to the heavy weights looks like the top of it was slightly wedging to the underside of the table. This leveraging of the hook would increase the stress on the piece. Also, I have no idea why you were worried about the weights hitting the floor when you could just put a pillow, pad, mat, towel, balled up shirt, or anything to keep the weights from damaging... your shop floor? Oh, and nobody goes through CA glue by the gallon unless you are doing epoxy pours or something.
