I admire your outlook. You are 100% right. Some cameras might have better codecs, but at the end of the day if you light the scene right, and as you said....put the footage in front of people, they would be hard pressed to determine which camera was which. It's funny that the 5D Mark II was considered an amazing camera of its day and now that new cameras come out, people forget. I'm not saying that new cameras shouldn't be purchased. I am just saying that maybe our cameras should be pushed as far as we can take them, and if we outgrow them...fine, time to move on :)

Working with a GH4 at the moment and I absolutely love it. I'm a film maker who has worked with the Alexa, Dragon and Epic so I wanted to buy something in my price range. I don't use 4/3 lenses I have an adapter for M42 lens which are fantastic to use, old primes, and also a canon adapter. Just finished shooting a promo for a feature and we shot it on M42 lenses, 24mm and 50mm with natural light and the results were very impressive. I don't like the Black Magic for a lot of reasons, and the C100 is not great for the price range.
@Therejectionartist10 жыл бұрын
Just got a gh4. Tested it with native lenses in low light and daylight. Really beautiful, clean image coming from cine v and d profiles with minimal changes to profile settings. There is some noise over 1600 ISO shooting at night...I used 45mm 1.8 olympus. If you are doing narrative stuff it needs lighting and probably would be ok at 800 ISO or lower. Noticed a lot more noise shooting at night when the profile settings were dialled down to -5. Only small tweaks to settings needed imo. But the daytime image coming off the cine profiles is really very impressive.

Since the D3200 wasn't really cutting it. I purchased the gh2 with the 14-140 1st gen lens (which is actually really nice, the autofocus was surprisingly very good and completely silent - never considered autofocus till now) for only $400. I've been shooting with the GH4 for about three days now. You know what turned me on about the GH4 besides 4K internal recording? The ability to focus while shooting (something my T2i and my GH2 don't do well). The auto focus works. The LCD display and EVF show focus peaking. Unlike you, my eyes are six decades old and aren't as sharp as they once where. :) I like your videos ... you're quite articulate and analytical.

I had a T2i that I sold a long with my SONY Nex to buy the GH4. You really have to take into consideration that the Ti series are not Pro end cameras and the GH4 is. I've worked with virtually every camera out and the GH4 has dominated the Canon's. Canon really usually pushes their products more for photographers. They don't shoot 4K, they still rely on 1080p. The low light for the GH4 is nothing short of amazing. I was actually talked out of the BMD 4K cinema camera by somebody that owned one and told me right out to purchase the GH4 over it. I've used this camera for Documentaries as well as film and love it. I'm in the midst of buying the MetaBones adapter myself to use Canon glass.

I rented a Blackmagic 2.5k for a music video shoot last year (my first time using it). The problem I suddenly had was that the power cable or the port wasn't transferring power from the external battery or power outlet into the camera. I was stuck with the internal battery which I couldn't charge, so by the time I almost finished the shoot attempting to film some quick b-roll, the camera would shut down within 5 seconds of starting up! Still better than DSLR video but there are some faulty issues with it. I also didn't bother with shooting 2.5k and settled with Pro Res HQ.

hi guy smart thinking. I am an aerial platform owner operator just bought a little a6000 for hires stills on my little rig, and the video with sigma 2.8 art series of primes is sensational a real surprise as I only bought it as a back up! body and three primes and c polerizer/nd filters £1000 am taking it out to the ninja star and have the gh4 with the shogun on order for the big 4k rig
@Shaman65amg10 жыл бұрын
Very comprehensive comparison of what I think are the most wanted cameras right now. I hesitated a lot between the Blackmagic and the C100, chose the latter because of the functions. Built-in ND filters is something almost all the other competitors don't have (besides the Sony FS700 but it's more expensive and doesn't do handheld very well). I'm interested in the GH4, the 4K in that size with a comparable quality to RED cameras is very appealing. Blackmagic's Proress is amazing too. There's no perfect camera; there's the right tool for the right job. It's just about what ticks most boxes. Good job :)
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Great to hear it, Mohamed! Yeah, I think people underestimate the value of built in NDs. Totally agree with you, and the more camera comparisons I watch, the more I realise that there isn't that much of a difference in terms of image quality, so the features are the most important thing!

For me the BMCC is starting to make the most sense. Resolution is not the whole story. It is pretty amazing to think that the BMPC is better than some Reds. The BMPC is unbeatably sharp. Reminds me of the reason I chose Nikon for stills. In fact I am thinking of using a converter on the BMCC to use my Nikon glass. I also think the BMCC looks better at 2k than the BMPC. Since total cost of footage matters, I want to shoot on the cheaper platform. Most cheaper 4k is compressed a good deal. I also have the DJI OSMO because it does so much of the right stuff in a hand held package for my B roll, I dont think it will ever be beaten. There too, size matters and 2k is my choice. Happy shooting.

Hey dude - I went from a t3i to a c100 and film a ton of weddings. I can tell you one thing, the c100 is a beast on my steadycam ( no body harness )... I could go all day with my t3i on the steadicam no problem..... now my arms are usually killing me by mid-morning with the C100.... that being said I used to have to record audio externally with the t3i so it was literally just the camera and lens on my steadycam... now its fully loaded on the steadicam to capture sound. I'm switching to the GH4 so I can offer my clients 4k within my price range. For the price of my c100 I can buy two GH4's and the interface unit for sound. I will run a small, super lightweight GH4 on my steadicam and my wife will run the second GH4 on a tripod to capture sound and an extra angle. All this being said.. the c100 is a great camera, and underrated as you said... I just can't pass up the following from the GH4 ( compact, lightweight size on steadicam, 4k option - recorded internally, slow motion, high bitrate 1080, I can buy two GH4's + accessories for the same price as my C100 body ) Lastly, I only have 4 EF lenses so it's no the end of the world. Think about the future also. Just because you're buying a 4k capable camera now, doesn't mean you HAVE to shoot 4k. But someday you will have to to in order to keep up with your competition. You won't have to upgrade camera's in a year or two if you don't want to. I see my c100 taking a hit now that clients are starting to ask about 4k.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that info! I didn't really talk about the weight of these cameras, but of course, for steadicams/gimbals/drones a lightweight camera is very important. Seems to me that your making a very smart choice! I'm also thinking that the GH4 is a good way to go!
@beaverdale10 жыл бұрын
thanks. this seems like an accurate and helpful overview of 3 great cameras. i was in a similar position not long ago and I owned a similar range of Canon lenses. i know it's a big step to change systems when you own so many great Canon lenses but moving is not as bad it seems. i was a long time owner of the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 IS along with 28mm, 50mm, 85mm and 100mm primes. i ended up selling all of them for the MFT equivalents and i've been extremely happy with the move. i have the Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 IS and 35-100mm 2.8 IS both of which you can shoot handheld video with and get great results. i've also got a bunch of small fast primes that i love shooting with. the IQ is fantastic and the small size and weight really makes a difference in what i can realistically carry and use. MFT bodies are so small and inexpensive by comparison that i've found myself using multiple bodies. take a look at footage from the GX7 or GM1. the quality is stunning for that price range so it's not just the GH4 that makes MFT interesting. even the Olympus EM1 or EM5 are underrated for video. once you learn the strengths and weakness of the codec the IBIS is a tool that can produce stunning results with hand held shots even with fast tele primes like the Olympus 75mm 1.8. anyway just thought i'd share my own experience making the transition. i just discovered your site so i'll have to check out some of your other reviews.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, Brian! It's really good to hear from people who work with these cameras. At the moment it looks like I may make the switch to MFT, but I think I will hang on to my Canon glass. I can totally see a camera coming out in 5yrs which has a larger sensor, so it would be a shame to have to re-purchase lenses! But, I've only got two lenses so it's not a big deal. I think that would also be my approach: 12-35mm and 35-100mm, but I'm also interested in speed boosters. Have you tried shooting with the metabones speed booster?
@beaverdale10 жыл бұрын
DSLRguide I'll be interested to see your reviews once you get hands on with the Panasonic MFT gear. I've never taken the time to break it down but especially for video there's so much that goes into the image processing pipeline besides the censor. It's clear that Panasonic has a vast history with video because they get so many of the small details right. In my own experience I'm more efficient and consistent with the Panasonic tools. Things like ergonomics, WB, function buttons, color, exposure, codecs, ETC mode, silent operation, audio, auto modes that don't shift settings, etc. show a knowledge of pro video requirements but come in small, mobile formats. I haven't tried the metabones stuff. I looked at adapters when I first switched from Canon but I wasn't that impressed with the options and the native lenses have benefits such as super fast AF, great performance wide open and portability. I've heard very good things about metabones though so i think they may be a cut above the other options. David Taylor has written a lot of good stuff about Metabones more from a photography perspective. soundimageplus.blogspot.com
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Brian Keairns It'll be a while before I upgrade, probably not for another year, but I'll be sure to make plenty of videos about it when I do! I feel like panasonic have the edge over companies like blackmagic in the quality and fine tuning of their hardware and software. The main reason for me is the super35 depth of field. I'm not an always-wide-open shooter, but I do like the option of having a slightly blurred background when shooting at 24mm on S35 for example. In 4K, the image is cropped even more than the GH3, so wide shots are going to have pretty deep focus. I suppose you just have to use wide aperture primes. I personally like how f/2.8 looks of a super35 sensor, not crazy shallow like f/1.4 on a full frame sensor, and yet still possible to have a shallow DOF if necessary. What do you think of the DOF on MFT?
@beaverdale10 жыл бұрын
DSLRguide One of my first MFT lenses was the Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 and that combined later with the Olympus 45mm f1.8 and Olympus 75mm f1.8 have provided everything I need for DOF control at 50mm FF equivalence and above. In many cases I actually prefer the latitude the extra MFT DOF provides because I can get the selective focus I want (shooting wide open) while not having to deal with such razor thin DOF. The only Canon lens I've used that gave me DOF control I might miss with MFT is the Canon EF 24mm f1.4. I'm not sure there's a MFT equivalent to that lens. But unless somebody really needs wide or super wide shallow DOF I don't see DOF control as a disadvantage of MFT. For example, I don't prefer the razor thin FF DOF of the 85mm f1.2 wide open for video. The MFT equivalent focal length Panasonic Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 IS is superior in almost every way to the older Canon design, it's less expensive, it works on less expensive bodies, it's optimized for video and provides all the DOF control I need. The Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f0.95 Lens is probably the closest to the truly wide shallow DOF lens for MFT. That lens is on my wish list but not a "must have" for me. I do have the Olympus 17mm f1.8 and I can compose a pretty good 35mm equivalent shallow DOF shot with that if needed. The Olympus 12mm f2.0 and the new Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 would also be fast wide angle options.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Brian Keairns Okay, thanks for that info! I'll be sure to bear this in mind when I look into the GH4 properly. I really do like shooting with zooms, but I think I could get away with using the 2.8 zooms, and having a few primes if I want a really shallow depth of field.
@assassingk10 жыл бұрын
i am currently in the same position that you're in however i was deciding whether to get a c100 or a sony fs700. But i decided that i would be best for me to settle with a 5D mark iii + Atomos Ninja Blade external recorder. This allows you to record x2 longer "nonstop" with higher quality 10 bit video.....i think that this would be great for you also. stack up on storage, lighting, sliders, other equipment etc while building your way up to the level that you truly wanna be.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
the extra record time is a great feature, but remember although it will record in 10bit, the footage will still act just like 8 bit, because that's the signal that it outputs. The image might be slightly better, but the difference is almost negligible. It's a bit like scaling a 1080p image up to 4K, it'll still look like 1080p! For me, the GH4 might be a better option, since it's cheaper than the 5D, so you're right, i can focus on other more important gear!

Yeah I really wanna properly enter the 4k market also to have the flexibility in post production....but I guess I might have to wait a few months and see what my options are

Hey Simon, I've been watching your videos for a while now and I think they are fantastic. I like their honesty, and the vast amounts of information mixed with your own personal experiences that they provide, while simultaneously chronicling your journey as a film-maker. I was doing some research when I came across this video, after having just seen one of your more recent ones, and I was quite literally waiting for an apple to make itself visible toward the end. Well done NLP Jedi mind trick right there. I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on the micro four thirds format at this point in time, since the Gh4 is now available for pretty low, on account of the impending Gh5 release. Also the G7 is out on the market with some great looking 4k, and both the cameras combined with speedboosters are out and about, putting a lot of incredible video out into the universe. Plus the G7/Gh4 + Metabones x0.71 Speedbooster + Atomos (Shogun/Assassin/Ninja/ Grandmaster?), would probably be everything you need to create and experiment with stunning video at a great price point too. I feel like you're probably still leaning toward the C100, but I really am very curious to know.

Hey Simon, would lenses such as the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens for Canon and the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon work with the GH4 with an adapter? Would I need to wait for the Metabones Canon EF adapter to use those lenses on the GH4?
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
If you used them with a regular adapter, then you would lose control over you aperture, and the crop factor would make those lenses a lot more telephoto. So waiting for the metabones adapter is a much better plan. When the metabones EF *speedbooster* to comes out, then you will have aperture control, and effectively a larger sensor so less cropping. Check out this article for more info: suggestionofmotion.com/blog/panasonic-gh4-lens-options-canon-ef/

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Lens (for the price) is one of the best performing lenses I've ever worked with. Also the mount on this lens can be changed (there is a cost). May I suggest: A friend uses this lens (with the Nikon mount) on his GH4. He uses the Metabones Nikon to MFT adapter and the Metabones Speed Booster Nikon to MFT adapter. By using these adapters you have two different crop factors, it's like have two lens in one. The adapters both give you aperture control. Note: exposure and focusing are both manually controlled. No auto, but who uses auto for cinema filming? If you are interested in full auto ENG style cameras, then go with the Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder. It's the absolute best and easiest to use camera for run and gun photography.

The price of the C100 is ridiculously high for me, couldn't afford that, but I've heard good stuff about it! Also, the Gh4 is in my interests, 1400 dollars for a body with those capabilities, pop some nice cine lenses on it, and ready to shoot. Looking forward to video tests and more reviews on the panasonic! Keep up the great reviews simon!

Exactly, I'm really glad that people are recognising that! Remember that the GH4 totals up to about $4500 with all of the accessories needed, but even then, it's a very exciting camera. Thanks for all the support dude!

DSLRguide I have pretty much made my mind up on this camera. What is the first sort of all around lens that isnt a kit type lens for this camera would you get? And then your next 2-3 lenses after that? I want to have 3-4 lenses within a few months of getting the camera, but will probably only be able to afford 1 when I get the camera. Also, I am planning on getting a JuicedLink Riggy Micro or the Riggy Assist Low-Noise...thing im concerned with is the micro doesnt have a headphone jack...do you know if you can plug the device into the mic line on cam and still use the headphone jack to monitor sound for video? Thanks!

dawhitecastle at the moment I'm looking first at the 12-35mm 2.8, followed by the 35-100mm 2.8, and then maybe some fast aperture primes? 25mm 1.4? or old manual glass. As far as I know, the headphone jack will hear anything that you plug into the mic input, whether it's a microphone, or preamp.

There have been so many cameras released since the creation of this video, you could make a new video on this same topic every few months. It's July 2016, do you still use a canon T3i with Magic Lantern? If you ever update this video with new camera options, reiterate the importance of lenses, lighting, production design, locations, actors, props, etc. You've mentioned all these before, but I feel it's important to keep mentioning, especially when feature films are being shot on the iPhone now.

For what you're doing I recommend the C100, as a film maker the GH4 will be good and the 4K is good but its not a cinema camera, and its not one for a reason. Its still a dslr. The C100 WILL be better for you definitely even if it is more expensive the feature set is just to great to even consider the gh4 as a competitor. Forget the BMCC4K its alot of money for something that needs quite a few accessories to go with it and uses SSDS to shoot to which are a pain in the ass. The only real pro is that it shoots in full 4K RAW if needed and lets be fair, if you're not shooting in raw then you're wasting your time.

great guy. Industry makes us buy all expensive gear, and depends in what you do, it is not really needed to expand it. For wedding clients, they won't feel a difference at all. It is not your gear that matter to them.
@rdoetjes10 жыл бұрын
I do a lot of VFX and green screen de 4:2:0 codecs don't give me a lot of room to play and it can make it very cumbersome. I bought an Atomos Ninja Blade hook it up to my 5D and voila 4:2:2 code and that to me is more important than 4K or even file size (prores HQ is not very heavy either). The only thing that keeps me from a GH4 is the small sensor. A 2 times crop factor doesn't work for me. My full frame is already a tight fit for a full shot on a 16mm for green screen. You are right, lights make all the difference! And for 200 quid you have already some very decent lights.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
That's very true, the codec is important for three reasons: file size, image quality, and green-screen / post work. Metabones are very close to releasing the EF to M4/3 Speedbooster, so with that adapter and a Tokina 11-16mm, you'd be very close to 16mm on full frame. Sound like you need a bigger studio, if you have to shoot everything at 16mm!
@rdoetjes10 жыл бұрын
DSLRguide You mean a bigger living room, which doubles as the studio :D I only shoot 16mm when I need a full of someone on green screen and when they need to move a round a little. If they are pretty much stationary I will shoot in portrait and rotate the image in post. Which gives also far more detail in the image because you pretty much use the 50-75% of the sensor instead of a 25-30%. I am actually waiting for MetaBones to have an MFT to EF that would make the GH4 an instant impulse buy :) I won't be delivering in 4K (total nonsense) but it really is a great work flow to down scale (keep the detail) and be able to crop, pan through an image. And the GH4 is sooo sharp (tiny sensors in that aspect are a pro).
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
Raymond Doetjes Haha! that's fair enough, and a great tip about shooting portrait when you can with green screen footage! Yeah I think that will be my camera of choice too. I totally agree with you about 4K delivery, but like you say there are many benefits on a 1080p timeline! It's also nice to know that when external recorders / hard drives become cheaper, there is the option of 10bit 4K!
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
What do you think of this video? His test showed that the extra detail from the 4:2:0 GH4 image was more helpful for keying than the colour information found in raw or 4:2:2 codecs! Check it out: @watch?v=-bUUNL6Zhvg#t=340
@rdoetjes10 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true the more resolution you have the more you can afford to loose and the more detail there is to work with from the beginning (what is 1 pixel wide on 1080p is 4 pixels wide on 4k) and the smaller the compression artefacts are in comparison. So if you have to choose one or the other, choose resolution over a loss-less codec. Because downscaling really blends those last edges nicely compared to actually having to shrink mattes resulting in ugly helmet hair (trust me done that loads for a quick key and not too much rotoscoping and layered keys) But the cool thing with the GH4 and an external recorder you have both resolution plus color! If you are on 1080p and you compare h.264 (which is crap at best) with a 422 prores HQ you choose for ProRes to work with. I do notice when I use for example Primatte that I need to add more pixels to the clean background because there's more shades of green. But usually I use IBK these days and there I don't see a alot of difference because it first and for most is a difference keyer and after that a chroma keyer. So yes I do agree with him except it's not the whole story. But with the GH4 you get the whole story. I am actually disappointed that I rather recently invested in a new MkIII if I knew the Gh4 was coming out and it is as good as it is, I would've sold my otehr canons and moved straight into GH4. Now the write off is just too big. But I may add a GH4 in September or December to the arsenal.

What about renting cameras depending on what you're doing? Especially for client work where you can include some of the fees in your price.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
In general: -If you do like one short film per year: RENT -If you are a freelance filmmaker: depends..(how often are you shooting? Can you charge the client for the camera?) -If you are constantly filming: BUY or buy a cheap camera, and then rent a nice camera for big projects. For me, I’d rather not have to go through the thought process: “should I film something today? I’ll have to go get the gear, and it’ll cost me X amount..” By paying up front, you have the gear with you, and *using it more often doesn’t make it more expensive.* That’s just my preference, I totally see why people choose to rent. Oh, and since I’m shooting many times per week, I need to own a camera anyway! I might to an episode on this topic at some point, good question David!
@daddouuuu10 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree with all you're saying! I personally prefer having my own camera too (I have a Nikon D600). A topic that I would like to suggest to you is how to gather all the crew for a short film and how to motivate them for your project. So going from casting the actors to the guy who's going to have to hold the mic and check if audio is fine.

DSLRguide Hey Simon, I wanted to know if you finally got a chance to work with the Panasonic GH4 with Metabones Speed-booster. I currently own the Canon 70D with the EFs 17-55mm 2.8, Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, EF 28mm 1.8 and EF 50mm 1.4. My interest is mainly film and although the 70D is a nice camera, there are features that I want that can't be found on this. I am stuck between the Black Magic Pocket, GH4, 7D Mark II (For 60fps at 1080p) and 5D Mark III. I have invested a lot of money on the glass i have and want to be able to keep them. However if some sacrifice was needed, I would do so if the gain is worth it. Please help.

Have you ever considered sony's a7s? Upsides - -s35 (crop mode) and full frame mode -Slog2 has a very good dynamic range (don't let people scare you in grading that it just require a bit of learning) -if you wanna go 4k in the future maybe you can buy the shogun. -Low light - more control over the depth of field. maybe not very important for you though. -Adapters for everything (except canon EF-S o_o) -(subjectively) it feels really cinematic. BMCC and C100 does too in my opinion but the gh4 doesn't. Downsides - -Currently, there are too few native lenses and they're expensivvee -no internal 4k, however the internal 1080p is very beautiful. -you might need 3-4 batteries for full day if you work a lot. -screen maybe hard to use in sunlight. -rolling shutter. (use crop mode to fix abit of it) Maybe there are some problems with the camera that might not affect me but it affects you way of work. well these are what i found in my mind for now haha. im planning to buy it thats why i have this much info :D

I believe the A7s was announced came out the day after this review was posted! That's a very good pros + cons list, I think you've covered pretty much everything. I could definitely see my self using the a7s in S35 mode so I can have the dynamic range + low light options. Since I like to shoot with 2 cameras for interviews, I'd probably pair the A7s with a GH4 or C100 since they are a bit more 'versatile' i.e. battery life, viewfinder, easy grading. Then there's the best of both worlds!

BM have made some fantastic cameras, but the accessories that you need just make it too expensive. The best of the 4K range is without a doubt the Lumix GH4. It is fantastic in low light, it has variable speeds and fps and the 1080p is breathtaking!!!!!!!! Also, if you want the base unit to run XLR you can pick one up for around £600. Also, you can mimic a super 35mm with the right adaptor.

Hello, you have a lot of great stuff on your channel. I feel entertained and informed. You suggested to use two cameras and not just one, invest the money in audio and light rather then just in one extraordinary camera and I like your way of thinking. I also want to get started with filming and at this point I`m asking myself wich camera I should choose. I read a lot of great things about the GH2. It`s pretty cheap at this point. The glasses I would buy for it I also could use on the gh4 if I learn a lot of things and decide to upgrade and can use it then as a pretty nice second camera. What are your thoughts about this? What do you think about the filmlook even the gh2 can create? I know. The abilities of the gh4 are awesome. The 4k mode, slow-motion and so on. But as a beginner I`m wondering if I really need this. Also I can`t understand your recommandation to use zoom-objectives. I read a lot, that you should use prime lens. Not just because of the high low light compatibility but also to use more movement in your videos and learn, that your legs are the best zoom you have. I would be very happy if you would like to answer. Best regards.

@bashbob9 жыл бұрын
+androidgeeking I'd recommend the a6000 bundle, the a6000 has the best sensor, giving the best quality and low light performance. It is also the fastest to autofocus, has an electronic viewfinder (so what you see is what you get) and is the lightest. The Canons have the advantage of touch screen autofocus, which is very useful to make your camera focus on the correct object. The 7D also has the smoothest focus which I believe looks the best. Canons also have more, cheaper and third party lenses, may be able to shoot raw video if you use magic lantern, as well as looking like a more professional camera. The Sony and Canon lenses are pretty similar, none of them will have mind blowing quality, be amazing in low light or be able to blur the background in every situation but they will be fine for most uses and they cover a good focal range (18mm is wide angle and 210/250 is zoomed in quite far). If you need to use the camera in really low light it may be worth looking at getting a prime lens, these do not zoom but generally have good quality and are bright (the smaller the f number the brighter the lens can be). For Canon some good value examples are: 24mm 2.8, 40mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8. and for Sony: 16mm 2.8, 20mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8. Any of the cameras would probably be able to get good results, although I would not advise the lumix because it is the worst in low light and has a fixed lens, but its important to also consider good lighting and other tools such as tripods, camera sliders and processing software. Therefore, it may be worth choosing a cheaper bundle and use the money in other areas to get better results. Sensor measurements for the cameras can be found here: www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EOS-70D-versus-Sony-A6000-versus-Canon-EOS-750D___895_942_1010 (the 750D is the T6i)

The BMPCC is cheap, but by the time you have bought all the accessories, it is only slightly cheaper than a GH4 with accessories.. It has problems with moire, and still all the problems of the BMPC4K.. For me, the image isn't the most important thing. I'd rather spend a bit more on a GH4 to be honest, even though the RAW image is pretty amazing.
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
DSLRguide plus, it's not a lowlight camera, which is pretty important for me.
@wannabgolden66810 жыл бұрын
I understand were you're coming from. Even with the speed booster the overall picture ends up being grainy ate times, when it tries and compensates for the lack of light coming through. And the tiny sensor doesn't help the camera either. And overall you will end up having to spent more money than intended with the accessories that are needed. Although it's a hell of a lot cheeper than it's more expensive counterparts, and does hold an impressive image quality and dynamic range. Based on whats available on the GH4, it looks VERY promising! I think its smart to hold off until more information presents its self. Regarding your short film, I think you should upload it. Take what you learned form the first one , and apply it to the next. It's about the journey... right?

Excelent point, I've met quite a few directors with nice RED cameras, and their work with actors it's terrible... I understand completly the choice of waiting until it the tool is actually a limitation. I believe firmly that, it is the only way to truly take advantage of the new gear.

For me, it's pretty close between the GH4 and C100, but I think if I had to choose, I'd go for the GH4. It seems to me that with the right profiles/post workflow, you can get some a seriously good image out of the GH4, and there are rumours about Canon speed boosters coming soon.. If you do end up buying a new camera, consider supporting the show by using the links (dslrguide.tv/cameras/) it doesn't cost you any extra, but earns me a small commission from amazon!

Really appreciate it! I think it'll be a while before Canon make a move. A lot of professional productions are using the C100 / C300, so I don't think Canon will rush to copy the specs of the GH4 for example. The bigger companies can afford to hold back features for the expensive cameras, and they still do just fine. Cameras like the GH4 and blackmagics really won't put Canon out of business, but hopefully it will speed them up a little bit.

How about Blackmagic's new URSA? And also for the BMPC4k if your shooting in daylight you can always throw a towel over the display to block the sun however it might not look too professional haha
@DSLRguide10 жыл бұрын
URSA looked good originally, but it weighs 16lbs.. it's just too big and heavy for a small production. Plus, I'd need a bigger tripod, and there's no chance of getting this on a drone / gimbal in the future, it's too heavy. Not to mention that you still need to buy an external recorder, v-mount battery, and EVF, to get it working handheld. Slowmotion is good, and XLR audio is nice, but I think again this is not a run-and-gun camera.

DSLRguide Yeah, I have a 11-16mm witch seems more like a 24 at 11mms wide enough for me. I would totally get a metabones adapter but There is currently no EF to Micro 4/3s. Your videos are great btw!

That is a great lens for that setup. I'm hearing lots of rumours about the EF speed booster, it's not too far away! Thanks Calen!

great vid. have you looked into the fs100? not as ergonomic as the c100 but its cheap enough second hand, good in lowlight 1080x60p and you can use canon glass with a metabones adapter that can make the image full frame!

I haven't really looked into it that much, but I think that the sacrifice in image quality (compared to the GH4 for example) is only worth it when it has features like the C100 (built in NDs, native EF mount etc). I suppose it's a contender, but I think I prefer the GH4 for now!

You use the 1080i recording. I don't think the black magic has any work arounds to get slow motion

I have a GH3 with Speedbooster. I use Panasonic lens with my Nikon lens on that camera. I use my ND filters that I use with my Nikon lens already so no add cost. SB does boost the Nikon lens 1 stop but they already really fast at 2.8 I didn't realize it made it into a 35mm this you ll have to explain how? Not that it really matters as the image is amazing with the Pan. or Nik. Lens As long as it works and gives me what I need Im cool! Clients happy too. Now do I upgrade to a GH4 hmmm...

Nice, sounds like a great setup! The speedbooster takes the S35 glass, and using some complicated lens elements can shrink the S35 image down to fit on the M4/3 sensor. Philip Bloom explains how their BMPCC version works - it's very similar: philipbloom.net/2013/05/19/speedbosterblackmagic/
