I respect your opinion and pose a question about these two cameras, and my debate about a purchase: 1. I am not a pro, and I'm looking for a travel camera, one to casually take pics when I'm in NYC, to take pics for promotional Yoga material (I'm a teacher), and I would describe myself as a entry level shooter who is ONLY interested in taking high quality STILLS. Have no interest in video features. 2. My interests in photo taking; travel such as landscape, portraits, street photography, Yoga promo materials, long exposed shots, nighttime cool shots and that's about it. 3. Money isn't necessarily an issue, but I can obviously benefit by purchasing a EOS R and a RF lens such as 24-70, and it'll be same cost as just the Eos R5 body. WILL I be happy 2-3 years from now if I buy the EOS R, get a lens, and save $ and will I be happy with the image quality and output? Or, should I just wait, save and just head first into the r5? I would love your insight.

What benefits or disadvantages (other than video and connectivity maybe) do the eos R cams have over the dslr's? I've got a basic eos 2000d, a beginners cam, is an eos R an upgrade worth doing?
@Daniel-dj7fh2 жыл бұрын
Looking at the prices of the eosR cameras, why would one take one of these (except for videos maybe) over any dslr?
@JustinMyersPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-dj7fh well, in the case of something like the 2000D, you’re talking about an upgrade from an APS-C sensor to the full frame sensors in all of these cameras. That will bring better image quality and much better lowlight performance. On a broader level of DSLR vs Mirrorless, it’s really just a matter of features. For example, the 5D Mark IV is a DSLR and the EOS R is a mirrorless camera. They both have the same sensor and internal functioning, the only difference being the features. So, the biggest two differences are that the autofocus performance is way better with mirrorless cameras because the camera focuses directly on the sensor, and that you have a “live view” from the sensor in the viewfinder of mirrorless cameras, so you can see your exact exposure and framing in the viewfinder while shooting. The difference going forward is that the big manufacturers, like Canon, are no longer making DSLR’s. So, any future innovation in cameras will be with mirrorless cameras. That is something that will affect future camera purchases, but also brings in the conversation of investing into the mirrorless ecosystem vs DSLR ecosystem. (One huge advantage with the Canon mirrorless ecosystem is that Canon DSLR lenses function perfectly when adapted to Canon mirrorless cameras). But all that aside, it really comes down to you, how your shoot, how you want to shoot and what you want from a camera. So, why are you thinking about upgrading? Is there a specific issue (or issues) with your camera that you are wanting to address with an upgrade?
@Daniel-dj7fh2 жыл бұрын
@@JustinMyersPhoto Thinking about getting a budget orientated telephoto the Canon 55-250mm stm lense. But with your explenation there shouldn't be a reason to not adapt it on something like the eos rp (If I heard correctly). Was just wondering if getting that lense is a less smart move than to get a better camera and then invest on lenses there. Thanks for your time my dude.
@JustinMyersPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-dj7fh so the main issue with the 55-250mm lens is that it is an EF-S lens, so the image from that lens only covers the size of an APS-C sensor. So, if you were to upgrade to a full frame mirrorless camera (the lens would not work at all with full frame DSLRs), like the RP at some point, you could use it, but only in the crop mode of the sensor. This means the photo with the EF-S lens would only give you a roughly ~10 MP image using only the certain portion of the 26MP sensor of the RP. So, it wouldn’t necessarily be the best lens to purchase specifically for using after upgrading. However, that really only matters if you are planning to upgrade your camera body in the near future. If that isn’t the immediate plan, the 55-250mm is a relatively affordable lens and if you stick with your 2000D for a few years and shoot a lot of telephoto images, you may very well get your money worth out of the lens before it comes time to upgrade. (You could also look into finding the lens used and save money that way). Full frame lenses are typically much more expensive than APS-C lenses, especially telephoto lenses. So, full frame telephoto zoom lenses in a similar field of view would typically cost several times more than what the EF-S 55-250mm costs. They also become much larger and heavier, so a lot more difficult to carry around. So if you really want to shoot telephoto and you aren’t planning on upgrading your camera anytime soon, the EF-S 55-250mm might be a good fit for you, as long as you are aware of its limitations when you do decide to upgrade

I agree with you the r6 seems like a videographers camera! I know you aren’t much of a specs guy but the sensor from the 1dx mk3 is barely better than a 6d. It’s been reviewed on dxomark, it received a score of 83. It’s low light performance, on paper at least, isn’t competitive with other brands. Still I’m sure it will take nice pics! In my opinion, regardless of your use case, the R5 is the camera to buy. It just makes all of canon’s other cameras seem like toys! It will be interesting to see how it actually performs!
@johnvanderploeg4 жыл бұрын
Justin Myers, I think you have to pay more attention to dxomark as they are pretty much the only people offering objective reviews of a sensor. The 1dx 3’s sensor is not market leading and has been tested in the field for months now, it’s not revolutionary and won’t be in the r6. The R5 is more of a wild card, although canon itself claim a stop of dynamic range over the 5d4. If this is true, canons dynamic range/low light performance will finally be close to being on par with Nikon and Sony. However, the r5’s lowlight performance won’t be industry leading. It’s no secret canon has been behind the pack in sensor performance for almost 10 years now and they finally may have something that is competitive, we’ll see. In general I’m an image quality guy so, realistically, the R5 doesn’t offer me anything I don’t already have in the z7, for my general use case. Although the af system would be nice! So, no I’m not tempted to switch. I am surprised tho, the R5 is cheaper than I thought it would be and not crippled, at least that we know about up to this point! I would be careful about getting too excited this camera won’t be perfect but it does sound pretty amazing at this point, it will be great to hear what non-canon ambassadors have to say about it!
@johnvanderploeg4 жыл бұрын
Justin Myers petapixel.com/2020/07/09/dxomark-admits-they-screwed-up-their-canon-1d-x-mark-iii-review/ looks like dxomark screwed up, it’s now officially a good sensor, still not industry leading tho! As far as market leading goes, that depends on what facet of the R5 you are talking about. It is not leading the industry in image quality and let’s be honest, it’s probably on par with Sony for af. Canon is leading for video right now and that makes sense to me as they have always been a more video centric company. I am looking forward to seeing how usable the electronic shutter is. Great video!
@johnvanderploeg4 жыл бұрын
Justin Myers one last point, you are making a lot of assumptions for a camera that at least up until this point is still just specs on paper. A lot of real world testing still needs to be done before those claims of greatness can be made. For example the 1 dx 3 has problems with horrendous rolling shutter in 4K 30, I think the R5 has a lot of potential but your opinion at this point is based on specs. Maybe you’re more of a specs guy than you realize!
