So i'm an audio engineer and i ran the recordings of my blue switches through an EQ freq analyzer. what I can tell you is that the keycaps themselves amplify the sound of the switches and therefore, switches will always be louder with keycaps on vs off. In other words, the caps act as mini speaker dome amplifiers. So especially on the blues, the clicks are really loud. This basically means that keys of diff shape and size will produce diff resonance in the keycap and therefore will sound diff. I.e, in the blue switches that i use, there is a spike in the 8.4khz freq for letter keys (smaller keycaps) while the spacebar sounds more hollow and evens out around 2.3khz (less ear piercing). Overall, the volume can be attenuated with o-rings, but if manufacturers really wanted to design a quiet keycap, they should fill the entire inside of the keys with silicon OR some kind of acoustic absorption material. I tried squeezing some putty into my keycaps and it significantly reduced the volume of the clicks (especially the annoying high frequencies) much more than o-rings, but made it heavier, so the keys were a little less snappy. this is definitely something that manufacturers can think about!

@jadimmy4 жыл бұрын
Silent reds are pretty much the same as reds, but more quiet (obviously) so if you’re worried about silent reds SOUNDING mushy, just go for normal reds. Since both are linear, it’ll obviously feel mushy/soft since there isn’t any kind of bump

Main 3 cherry switches most decide between. Cherry Mx Blue pros and cons Pros: A ton of feedback, you can easily tell when the switch has actuated. Heavier good for typists who tend to bottom their keys out a lot. Cons: Ridiculously loud, don’t bring em in an office or a shared workspace ever you will be hated. Too heavy for some, can get tiring. Not good for gaming despite how good they sound double tapping keys and the time it takes to bottom out and come back up is too long for a lot of gamers including myself. Cherry Mx brown Pros and cons Pros: Still has audible feedback and you can still hear when the key is actuated. The tactile bump feels great to type on because once you feel the bump you don’t need to press the key anymore just move on to the next key, very easy to not bottom out Browns. Cons: Still has a decently noisy sound, may not annoy others around you but if you enjoy a quieter keyboard this is not the switch for you. Cherry Mx red Pros and Cons Pros: Linear, less force to actuate the key:Faster Minimal noise, you won’t ever annoy someone with this switch and your mic will not pic up noises from it while talking in game. Great for gaming, the linear switches are great for gaming because they are much more smooth and faster and you can really pull off very fast key strokes. Cons: A lot of typists prefer keyboards with feedback so they can hear when they’ve actuated the key. There is only a slight almost un-noticeable dip when the key is actuated.

Thx for the helpful video. Over the years, I've gone through all the phases/permutations of clicky/silent tactile/non-tactile. In an office environment, you have to go silent. Noise does irritate your coworkers and the noise is a subtle inference as to how much/little work you're doing. It's better to be silent and let them guess than to be clicky and let them form opinions (right or wrong). My fave keyboard of all time is the IBM 3278-2 terminal. IBM had a patent on it. It's like the MX-Brown BUT after activation, the key force drops drastically. It's like "falling off a cliff". For a touch typist, it's W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L because you can type faster and more accurately after each key is activated. I have wet dreams of typing on this keyboard (figuratively of course). My current keyboard is the Kinesis Freestyle 2 because it helps w/ my carpal tunnel syndrome. I also switched to the Colemak layout almost 10 years ago. The Kinesis is only ok because of its generic key feel. I have no regrets about Colemak however. I used to type 110 wpm with QWERTY but now type 80 wpm on both layouts after the switch. I don't regret it. My fingers were so tired at the end of the day, but now they're in much better shape.

Clicky keyboards for me is also the sound of production. Even more so an old fashioned typewriter of course, and talking about finger fatigue. Man... from how you talk about fatigue I know you never even touched a mechanical type writer. I can tell you know... it's way beyond 80 grams and they used to due it for 40 hours a week or 8 hours a day in offices back in the day. Now if those co-workers think a clicky keyboard is annoying... If your gaming exclusively then get the speed, but if you like feeling when you type I would suggest the brown. I personally own a keyboard with brown switches and would highly recommend them.

Great explanation. Saves me the trouble. I can imagine using a mixture of these on a keyboard depending on the button and whether you need more deliberate force to activate if accidental usage would be annoying, like the Windows or Escape button. 45g for me, but I'm now torn between tactile or no tactile.

Got brown copies, as I'm cheap, however this video really did set my mind at ease. I'm very excited, it's really going to be a massive upgrade over my current keyboard, as the keys are so stiff now that I've had to be a bit heavy handed (which is fatiguing my fingers, like you mentioned happens to you). Very well explained, thank you.

1:20 My god, the satisfaction from hearing that. Also, my favorite key is the blue switch, due to the fact that it has the loudest click, which is the most satisfying thing about using the keyboard; hearing the click and feeling the click as well with your fingers. Soon, however, I might be willing to get a brown switched keyboard that is wireless. I dunno how that one sounds, but at least it'll be wireless.

I find the browns to be the best in my opinion at least. I think the tactile feel is perfect and after trying the reds, I find that I accidentally press the buttons a lot when I'm resting my fingers on the keyboard during games. On the flip side, the browns give just a slight bit of resistance since they have that tactile bump and that prevents me from pressing them down as I rest my finger on the key. It also lets me know exactly when I'm actuating the key because I can feel the bump and feel when it both engages and releases. It's perfect for mobas in my opinion because of that. It's also light enough to where it doesn't fatigue my fingers at all which I why I haven't even tried the heavier switches yet. I don't think I really need that level of resistance. I would be interested in trying some other switches from different companies though. Their comparable switches to browns my specifically.

i just bought my cherry mx board 6.0 it comes with red switch. i don't know why anyone would say that is bad for typing and non gaming usage because to me, i think it feel so good. you just press the switch, you can feel the smooth pressure going down until you bottom out. linear switch feel like it has a sturdy build quality switches (absolutely it's just my own preference) and heard that linear switches can live longer than tactile switches. i don't know. i just like the red a lot. also, the sound of bottoming out, not too loud, just love to hear the sound of it. anyways, i bottoming out every keys maybe that's why i found no problem with the red.

I never used brown but i guess these are similar to membrane but better. Depends for what are you using. I use red for cs go id doesnt feel good because you need to stop suddenly and because key is activate half way trought its hard do control but in other hand is very fast. Maybe red is better for some games where you didnt need sudden stop like bloodhunt, fortnite, warzone. Funny thing is i have better movement with membrane in cs go than red but i noticed faster stop. Can u tell what games tou played with brown and hkw they feel.
