So glad I found this channel. :) Just wondering if there's any reason you can't use a longer lens (35mm, or 24-70) in a dome port if it fits using an extender? Or should anyone shooting 20mm or higher be using a flat port? What happens when you have something like a 15-35?
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography Жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, thanks for your question mate! The curved nature of the wide lenses like a 15mm match the curve of the dome port and hence there is less lens distortion... has the lenses increase in length they are flat in nature which better matches the flat ports... there are other reasons as well, but its not that you can't shoot with long lenses through a dome port, its just they work better optically through a flat port... in the situation with the 15-35mm if I am shooting at mainly 15-20mm I will use a dome, but if Im shooting at mainly 35mm I may consider a flat port but having said that a 35mm is not too bad through a dome... when you get out to 50mm and beyond thats when you should really be using a flat port only.... There so much to this which can't be covered in a KZbin comment but in short you should be perfectly fine with your dome with anything under 35mm and depending on your quality tolerance you could possibly use your dome for slightly longer lenses.

What housing do you use for your camera? And do you have any recommendations for an eos RP with a 24-105 mm lens? Love your videos!

Thanks so much for your comment and kind words mate. I use Aquatech housings. The Aquatech housings have served me very well for many years. I don't think they make a housing for the RP unfortunately. Maybe look up brands like Salty Housings or Liquid Eye I think they can do customs

Thank you for the explanation! Do you scuba dive with the 8 inch dome? I have been told it’s too buoyant to dive with..
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 2 жыл бұрын
I don't scuba dive, only free dive. The dome is super buoyant. The Aquatech gear is not really designed for super deep scuba stuff.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the info. When shooting with an 8" dome port for split shots, are you setting the focus on the below or above for the best possible sharpest images?
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray thanks for your question. It depends what is most important. If it is just water below then above the surface takes priority, but if both have interest then I focus on the subject below. There is a lot more to it, but for the space I have here this is the general rule.

@@dreamlifephotography Thanks Tom for your reply. I’m new to the splits/Dome. I took a few shots with mixed results. It’s definitely harder than I thought. Especially getting the focus correctly. Maybe some of the shots I’ve seen online, could be focus stacked?? I’ll keep experimenting until I get it right. Thanks Legendary Tom!!!!!

Hey, thanks for great video. Helped me to decide on the size I need. Could you tell your insights about "sun hood" on the dome. The one I'm ordering is called "surf edition" and has no "sun hood" elements around. Regular version are with it. Is there any major risk/benefits having or not having sun hood element on dome? Thanks
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography Жыл бұрын
Hey Tadas, thanks for your question and encouragement.. really appreciate! I use a brand called aquatech that do not use sun hoods..... I know a lot of deep diving housings have sun hoods but they are actually more to prevent the light coming from strobes (flashes) that are positioned out to the side of the housing and the flare can come across the front of the port from the flash... When going ultra deep you lose so much light so high powered strobes are needed.... most of what I shoot and the photographers that use Aquatech are shooting either on the surface or down to 5-8 meters at the most.... so it depends how and what you are going to photograph?
@TadasTravel

Hi Tom, just found your channel and great content and delivery thereof! I have been SPL shooter with Canon 7D for around 10 years and making the move to Aquatech and moving onto the Canon 7Dmk2. I have question regarding dome port selection, I use the trusty old Tokina with 10-17mm with hood and was hoping to get the PD 100 which according to the chart is compatible with this lens for underwater/split shots, how would this perform in my regular above water shooting, I was hoping that if I purchase this port I can use all the mentioned options? I imagine keeping the surface off the larger dome port full of spit for wet port whilst shooting above water would be the issue? Whats your thoughts on this?
@dreamlifephotography
@dreamlifephotography 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerome, thanks so much for your message and kind words. The PD 100 is a great port. I use my dome port for underwater - split level shots and above surface action photography like surfing and for my commercial photography. I never have trouble with water drops when shooting above the surface of the water with my 8 inch dome port. If you use the spit method correctly it works great. I use the dome for all my wide angle shooting. Every lens 20mm or wider is always shot inside my dome port. If you are about to invest in a new Aquatech setup you can a get a 10% discount by using my code word AF-TOMWOODS-AUS at the Aquatech checkout page. Hope this helps out, cheers Tom
