Liverpool felt warmer and more human than Malmo. I found the Swedish arena weirdly sterile-looking. I did enjoy some of the Swedish humour, but overall everything was overshadowed by the activists' success in turning the competition into an ugly, ego-driven battleground of threats, whining and disgusting unsportsmanlike behaviour from the arena crowd. Of course, the final result was Activists 0 - Israel 1 (hahah), but all the humour just felt strained sitting next to that mess. The Swedish green room did amuse me somewhat - reminded me of The Hunger Games. Quite apt, then, given the state of the show....

I've never disagreed with someone so strongly in my life... 2023 was celebration. 2024 was [mostly] misery.

Each year they try to be competitive when hosting. The staging is cool and all but it costs so much money for special effects and pyro. Some countries will get amazing staging while some can’t afford much. This happened to Moldova this year, they couldn’t afford to bring the back up vocalists/dancers

Well, it is not cheap for sure, the opposite but it is about creativity. And Moldova actually approached their staging the worst possible way to help the song. This year the arena was one big interactive prop. So this is just an excuse. Limits gives you perspectives and st Eurovision you have cameras / angles / cuts / lights for free. Just need tomuse them accordingly.

Both 2023 and 2024 did certain things well, but they were different things. 2023 had the more diverse song selection, far better postcards (being green doesn't have to mean being lazy), the intervals felt more impactful and had more heart (yes both had a medley of previous acts but in Liverpool they were covering songs which was more interesting). While 2024 had the better stage and stagings (although I'd have liked less wide shots personally), and nice ideas like the slo-mo element of the postcards. The hosts and script are personal preference, last year probably had less humour but it would have felt weird if it was all smiles given the war in Ukraine. As for the results presentation, I felt the jury voting this year was very stilted, while in 2023 there was more fun and Hannah/Graham were less restricted, probably a consequence of the political situation.

You're SO right. As a UK-Ukraine co-production in 2023, it would've been inappropriate to have all-out comedy routines and constant gay innuendo. If it had been an independent BBC production, the tone would've been quite different and more relaxed. However, I think the balance of warmth, poignancy and friendliness was appropriate and successful.

Malmo had better songs, and a better winner, but Liverpool had a superb atmosphere, the fans were fantastic, and better presentation and postcards, and note how much better Noa and Netta were treated by acts and fans, including those with long held anti Israel views, in Merseyside than how Eden G was treated by acts and fans - including some who have been to or performed in Israel - in Malmo. (In both scenarios, an act that was amongst my faves of its year was an example showing the compare and contrast). Ps I’m a Brit with a scouse father even though I’m a londoner

the songs were overall better in 2024.... but the vibes of 2023 were better.

2023, it still had some standards. After this, everything should start moving up... As saying goes ... after rain, sun always come up . And because everything happened just because ... nobody caused it. Question is in which direction will everything move ... who is fast enough to decode trend, should be able to choose best entry. Hopefully trends will reverse from the next year. But, if it goes in direction of hard core fans, things as this year could repeat. Wouldn't be undeserved, TBH. And, of course, things will move in right direction because of all those things which happened as they should and who knows about them will understand !
