Now that I finally have both, I gotta say I play A LOT more on the ips v2, it's colors and clearness are just a bliss! It's just very easy on the eyes and just very beautiful to play. I think it's the best way to play gba today. But I still love the 101 aswell.

I have the 101 on my GBA and an IPS on my SP. For me it comes down to which game I'm playing - certain games look and feel better with one or the other. I'm very glad to have both for my GB games.

While the IPS' color, viewing angles and backlighting is far superior to the AGS 101, the image looks blown up, making sprites and letters look noticeably jagged/pixelated. This is super noticeable when playing a game like Golden Sun on an IPS v2 and it looks terrible...Not sure if its because the IPS screen is slightly bigger than an ags one. The AGS 101 definitely looks better, especially when you increase brightness settings to it.

In Goku 2 the artifacting and what appears to be dropped frames, do happen on 101. These are due to the ROM and not the screens.

For the battery life test, did all the GBA's have the same motherboard version? The 32-pin motherboard has noticeably better battery life compared to the 40-pin.

I have an AGS101 and I really love it, but I am getting an IPS v2. You're video helped me decide to get an IPS v2, while I love the pixel grid look of the AGB-101 a ton and am the type to use the best CRT shaders (CRT-Royale-kurozumi), but the IPS seems worth it to me, I really love the GBA, and I'm getting back into it pretty heavy, so it's worth it, cause who knows if I'll be able to get my hands on an analouge Pocket, least for retail price...

Glad I could help you decide! I think that the IPS screens have gotten even better since I made this video last year. The only real negative I see in them still is the battery consumption. Which isnt really an issue if you have a rechargeable battery mod :)

The funny thing is you don’t need an Analogue Pocket at all if you own a modded GBC with Q5 IPS display mod and one GBA with IPS V2. The main goal of this Analogue Pocket is to emulate the Original hardware via FPGA as good as possible but it never comes to 100% and it has some flaws. Who actually cares when you have absolute Original hardware and can play on the original system?!

AGS101 has the native resolution that GBA games were designed for. The IPS panel does a rescaling that makes the games not look like they were designed to look, it's like playing with a cheap emulator console.

I think most people who are hooked on classic games have a few consoles. One for outdoors sunlight(original gba) one for indoor(101) and the ips just for looks.

You really need to use those Super Mario Color hacks for GBA. These games were designed for the original non backlit GBA so they pumped up the brightness like crazy.

I installed ips v2 on mine but still prefer ags-101... Maybe i don't need the best on retro. It feels like something emulate machine except appearance. Just getting little fine one and originality was enough for me. Not so clear and a little better also kind of nostalgic memory i thought. I need to find some ags-101s :(

BryanX 64 I’ve never had a problem with the blur but that is most likely a frame rate issue Any sort of blur that I’ve had on the 101 will turn into a sharper looking blur on the ips. Almost looking more like lines, not necessarily a bad or a good thing on either end but that’s just what I’ve noticed

Have you tried adjusting the potentiometer on the GBA with the IPS screen? I know that fixes a lot of display issues that can arise with the 101 , so it might help with the IPS

The IPS screen is a good replacement for the GBA 001 and the GBA SP 001. I have Both IPS and 101 and its safe to say that the IPS works great out Doors have a lot of bright the images good overall. But the 101 screen Compared to the IPS. The 101 doesn’t have frame Drop does not have wash colors seriously all the colors on the IPS are wash out It’s not only black green and yellow all of then are wash out on The IPS. Battery life is better on the 101 the ONLY downside on the 101 is the brightness. If you want the first/default level Brightness of the GameBoy Advance SP 101 get the 40 or 32 Pin Backlight Adapter Brightness Switch Ribbon Cable For Game Boy Advance . IF NOT You need to modded further to have The second level of Brightness like the GameBoy Advance SP 101. hope this helps.

I installed an original AGS 101 Screen in the GBA, now I have the problem that the plastic screen lens drops out a bit at the bottom side, since the screen is a bit to thick. The glue of the plastic lens is not sticky enough. Any ideas how to solve this?

I was referring to Horizontal x vertical pixels being that 4k = 3840 x 2160 while HD is 1920 x 1080. Using it as an analogy to describe one side and not the overall surface area like how 4k was marketed was probably not the best choice on my part but I thought it sounded good and easy to understand

The whole "V" term gets thrown around a lot. I read somewhere that the FP screens have had quite a few revisions past the V2 model but were still marketed as the "V2". So when is comes to V3 I honestly am not sure which screen we are referring to at this point lol.

Did you notice some image retention or burn-in in the IPS GBA ? Because I've noticed this problem in my console (V2) and it's especially flagrant in some Nintendo games like Warioland 4. I like my IPS but it can get really ugly :(

I haven't notice any problems with Warioland 4, but there is some really bad image retention on Final Fight One. This happens in text boxes on the intro. I think that is 100% down to the screen and not the cable.

The only thing that gets me with the IPS panel is how washed out and inaccurate all the colours are, reds become orange and subtle browns become skin pink. The AGS panels LOOK more pixelated on camera, but you honestly can't see the same difference in person. Everyone talks about the IPS screens having brighter and better viewing angles, battery life is way more important than people think it is. 6-9 hours for a GBA is honestly pathetic, my AGS-101 lasts 20 hours on a set a rechargeable AA Duarcells. Maybe the IPS panels would last longer if they had true 1:1 scaling, rather than pushing 4x the amount of pixels for no real world benefit. I'd rather see a 1:1 scaled OLED screen in honesty, that would look amazing. It's the same issue as people wanting screens with ridiculously high pixel densities. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but if our eyes genuinely can't tell much of a difference above "Retina" (300dpi+) then what's the point having more? Surely the rest is just draining your battery life? Why not just focus on better screen technology like Mini-LEDs and 120Hz refresh rates?

The 101 is clearly better. It has some sort of color correction that IPS didn't have. That's why all IPS mod screens looks saturated.

You can't just plainly compare it with a 4k monitor to a 1280*720 monitor, because the games were made with the original screen in mind. So it would be like watching a 720p movie on a 4k tv, that happens to be the same size as your 1280*720 monitor.
