For the last 2 years or so I have carried a Grayl Filter with me pretty much every day. I carry an EDC backpack from @TheHiddenWoodsmen and a Grayl Filter is always in the side pocket. When I travel, it comes with me as well. Grayl has 3 models to choose from, and today we will take a look mainly at the newest UltraPress and compare it to the other models.

Had all 3 as they each came out. Gave away the ultra light one as prefer the features and easier of use of the new variation. Settled on the newest version and have 3. Old Geos press I kept for emergencies,. Drunk out of rivers I have been swimming in with it. My friends seeing it have bought them mainly for travelling. One thing I would recomend is also purchase a millbank bag for a pre filter. It takes up hardly any room and prolongs the geo press filters in dirtier water.

the grayl is not just a filter but a purifier, the difference is that a purifier does everything a filter does, but more and gets rid of more viruses, protozoa, and bacteria.

Most people who get sick of waterborn diseases despite of used a waterfilter, didn't used it correctly. Clogged filter, faild filter and cross-contamination especially are the main results of user errors while using waterfilters.

I’ve used the Geopress for years, in country and traveling abroad. Mexico is a regular trip for me, and I’ve never bought a bottle of water while there. I’ve filtered tap water and even water at one of the cenote I was diving at. Never been sick once. I use it all the time when mountain biking as well, and found an oversized bottle cage to strap it to the bike. It has never been damaged by getting rattled around on the bike. I replace the filter once a year, and always prefilter if the water is chunky.

Ernie, great review man. I keep an ultrapress in my truck at all times. I also have the original geopress that I carry when I want a higher capacity container. Most of my outdoor activities revolve around fishing so the ultrapress is just fine 99% of the time since I’m in the water and can refill it anytime. But overall, this is my go to filter and I’ve never had any problems either.

Ah man, I am loving my Titanium Ultrapress. I figured out I could pack the Soto Windmaster, with a sponge, igniter and tiny soap bottle in a stuff sack and slide it into the Grayl Ti. That and a can of gas and I am set. By the way, the reason for the Soto is because the Grayl pot is too narrow for the MSR PR. I previously had the 24oz and it was great as well, however I feel the Ti is a dream.

I carry my Geopress EVERYWHERE. It has forever changed my motorcycle trips and camping. I take it on vacations, airplanes, cruises, work, everywhere! The only time I do not take it is while on my bicycle - wont fit in the holder, and no, not changing that out. I go through plenty of filters during the year, but cheaper than buying bottled water on the go. I have gotten my dad one, and have talked to others who do a lot of camping and road trips and they have all swapped over the the Grayls.

My ONE bad experience with a Grayl was with my Ultralight, and I didn’t pre-filter some very sedimented water. I went from full-flow to no-flow in 2 presses. That was also me breaking my own rules - pre-filter into the CNOC with a bandanna, then through the Sawyer Squeeze for normal use. The Grayl is usually reserved for post-Sawyer water if there is a suspicion of viruses, pesticides, heavy metals, or some other concern.

Had mine for a few months but havent had a chance to use it yet. Ik it should be prefiltered with a cloth to save the filter from particulates and sediment but im extremely excited to put it to the test. Only negative reviews ive heard of is people sayith the filters dont last long before you cant even push them down but im going to chalk that up to user error. Even if i can get 3 gallons out of my geopress filter thats well worth it just in weight savings, ease of use, and the amount of filtration it has. The sawyer filter was runner up for me but it seemed like alot of hassle and time consuming without the quality of filtration

I would get the grayl but here in the US most water is treated and not containing virus’. If I was going overseas to a country that I couldn’t trust the water sources, I may consider it. I use the hiker pro for backpacking, and it filters well, and is easy to use. For the water on trail, I am just looking to filter for giardia and other water bacteria or parasites. I considered the grayl a while back but it was a bit heavier.

We have the large one we use in the RV as an extra level of filtering. The water tastes great after filtering through the Grayl, not so good just using the RV filter. One thing we don't like is if it isn't lined perfectly up is the unfiltered water will spray into your face when pushing in the filter. You just need to aline it perfectly and the problem is solved. Looking to the titanium one for backpacking as it is smaller and you have the option to boil in it.

Biggest issue I had with this filter is speed, after only two litres of very clear (but potentially unsafe) water, the pressure resistance of the brand new filter when I pushed down became very high, so it went from 8-10 seconds to those 20 seconds plus essentially immediately. I suspect a defect, so I'll try get my hands on a new one from the company, but it was a little concerning performance wise if I were to rely on it
