Forehand I use the semi western grip because that gives me a more wider range with the ball. I don't need to use a Full Western grip because I use the semi western grip to topspin the ball normally or I use the buggy whip finish.

I used a western grip as a junior (along with many of the juniors at my club) great assessment that it's because all the balls bounce up high on young players. The red and orange balls were a great addition for juniors. FYI I'm in my 30s now and use a modified Eastern/SW grip now because I didn't have enough power as I got older because of the extreme western grip.

I learned with the Continental, but have switched to the Eastern. I tried the Semi-Western but have never felt comfortable with it,

I learned to play in 99-00. One of the main reasons I’ve stuck with the Wilson pro staff is that it’s one of the few that feels like the sticks I learned to play with, given the smaller head and heavier weight.

One problem I have with semi western is when trying to crush high balls, sometimes it end up too thin and not enough forward momentum

Yes, that's when you want to "flatten out" the swing a bit.

My first grip was a eastern, but the teacher in my university notice that I had a lot of power and all of my balls went long hahaha, so he told me about topsin but I wasnt comfortable doing it. After my experience with eastern he told me to try the semi western and it was way more comfortable to me, now doing topsin was easier and my balls entered the court hahaha. I still have a hard time doing flat forehands, almost all my balls go long.

Yes, the game has changed at the pro level from 4 decades ago. Fewer grass tournaments and much higher bounces. It is true. Hence the transition at the pro level to SW grip. It is debatable whether this is an argument for rec to switch grips. In America, practically every match is still played on hard courts. Just as it was years ago. Yes, the equipment has improved. But it is not clear that a middle-aged 4.0 player today is hitting with all that much of a higher bounce than a rec player from 1990. There is a strong argument to be made that rec players should continue using the Eastern grip that was commonly recommended 30+ years ago. 🎾

@@robertle7237 " It is faster and easier to switch from FH to BH if you use the eastern FH. " Some players use a SW grip on the forehand and do not change grip on their one-handed backhand; hit with the same side of the strings! Haven't tried that, but it is an option for many to consider.

I don't know the kind of grip I'm using. My knuckle rests on the borderline between the second and third bevels. They say it's continental. I can hit forehands and backhands without changing grip. My backhand is the more consistent stroke and I can return balls on serve more receiving on the ad court. They say I'm using a backhand grip to hit my forehand. I also use the exact grip doing serves and overheads.

Do pros change their forehand grip based on the height of the incoming ball? Or the balls they want to achieve (eg: flatten out use eastern and spin use SW)?

No, ideally with good footwork you control the contact point and/ or they adjust the swing path
