I taught myself "shuttle tatting" using just a sewing machine bobbin. It meant I didn't have to spend any money before deciding that it was something I wanted to take up, only once I got the hang of it did I decide to purchase some beautiful shuttles off etsy. While my actual shuttles arrive (it will take about 3 months lol), I'm still practising with my bobbins and an antique crochet hook that was my great grandmothers. I have managed to make super simple flowers so far but I will keep trying to do more complicated things. Thanks for the video, I wanted to know if it was worth learning needle tatting 💜

Wow, I hope your shuttles arrive soon! The bobbin idea is really good(and practical, I had years of knitting with whatever was handed down to me because I had nothing to spend), but I promise it will be much easier with the shuttles - when they arrive you will already be a master at it :)

I haven't tried it but, shuttle tatting looks harder on the arthritic hands so I stick to needle. I don't mind much looser stitches or knotting. :) I actually do needle tatting when I need a break from knitting or crocheting. It's very easy on the hands to me, I can hold it very loosely and the movements seem less stressful on my joints.

You're right. I started a needle tatter and went on to shuttle tatting. Shuttle tatting is super neat and prettier!

Personally, I think needle tatting is better for small projects like earrings and tiny projects, shuttle is best for bigger projects like doilies and table cloth... Just my personal opinion
@mermaidjaffa91358 жыл бұрын
Its also easier to add beads with needle tatting. With shuttle, sometimes the beads can get in the way while you're tatting that doesn't need a bead there.

I do both. Shuttle tatting does make nicer knots and has a cleaner look to me. I had to teach myself to needle and shuttle tat because I am left handed. I shuttle tat left handed but needle tat like everyone else.
@johannenagel70565 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that your dominant hand would even matter with these things, because really; we use both :) I feel like this too when people want to learn to knit left handed - isn't it easier to just "train" your right hand to do something? I say this as a right-handed person, so I really don't know and I am actually curious :)
@christyblack17003 жыл бұрын
@@johannenagel7056 try flipping your work around and hold the shuttle in your left hand and your thread in your right and try working it backwards and that's what it's sorta like for a dominant lefty. It's just as hard to train yourself to be able to tat fluently as a lefty as it would be for a lefty to train to tat as a right hander

Hi, I learned shuttle tatting when I was quite young (around 10 years old)and I love it. I learned needle tatting much, much later, because now, in my sixties, with some arthritis, it is harder to use the shuttle for a very long time. I can see you are still quite young, but have you heard any tips from anyone else with this problem?
@johannenagel70567 жыл бұрын
Hi : ) what a wonderful thing to have learned so young! I am really sorry, I asked around and none of the people I know who have arthritis (in hands or arms) had any tips other than pain killers : / I guess you could try switching positions with your hands every so often? I do that when I knit or crochet because I have a thing with my wrist, and it helps a little. happy tatting : )
@sisterfranceskennedy38447 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply! I will try switching hand positions, maybe taking breaks more often, and an occasional Advil... it is worth it!

I know this comment is 3 years old, but for anyone who sees it and is having the same issues, try KT TAPE. I specifically use RockTape, but it helps so much. Look on KZbin for how to wrap your hands/wrists/joints for your specific issue

Thank you for explaining the difference between the two ways to tat, l totally agree with you, having tried both the look of the piece worked on with shuttle is perfect, but the needle is easier for me. but today l am going to work on my shuttle skills, love your tutorials. Mary Ann.

My aunt just could tatting by shuttle and to my mom do does not the finish results in needle tatting, so they work neddle tatting without the knot, is really better.
@milagrourbina48357 жыл бұрын
Hi my aunt and my mother make needle tatting but they do not make the knot shoe, they continue exactly you make a chain with a shuttle so they use the other treadh than you use in needle tatting to do the chain so the result is exactly without a knot, I can look nobody make this, but is really better than the traditional needle tecnique. I hope you try it to do this tecnique.
@johannenagel70567 жыл бұрын
Wow that's awesome thanks! I will try that!
@milagrourbina48357 жыл бұрын
Yes it is you are putting the stiches in the loop atfter you put they in the needle.
@milagrourbina48357 жыл бұрын
you have your thread in your right hand and the you put the thread from the ball making a loop put it at the point of the needle so make the first doble stich with the thraed that goes to the needle, making a loop, behind the needle, so make the stich, and you are making with the trhead of the loop the same as tatting shuttle, is very important no get confuse with the trhread is now from the just the ball, remember you split the thread when you make the first half doble stich. make all the stiches pull the needle throught they, and you have a perfect ring like you made with a shuttle.
@milagrourbina48357 жыл бұрын
Barbara Foster in her book make a loop for making a ring in needle tatting she never use the thread from the ball for making the ring my mother use it but she does not cut thread off the ball, is better.

I think shuttle tatting it's more difficult... needle tatting looks more easy but I'm a beginner... I'm. confused...

Give it a go! I can't remember concluding that shuttle tatting is easier, but if I did I am sorry - this was not my intension. At the end of the day, it's very personal what works for you and your way of learning :)

@@johannenagel7056 Hello! I must say that I keep to trying and trying... the first 6 days was just mistakes and difficult to make decent knots... but I must say, that keeping to try, (since I really liked the shuttle ), I learned! Finally the knots comes decent and Im more fast now! Im very happy! So to all that are almost confused or give up, I say, if you really like it, if you have a bit of manuality , you can do it! Now that I've tried both needle and shuttle, I must say that shuttle is much more funny! Lol Anyway I think also needle tatting it's interesting. But shuttle , once one can use it, it's more fun!

You have different sizes of needles to adjust the sizes of your DS. As far as he tenseness of your rings and chains as you pull the thread through, it took me some time and experimentation to learn that. Also if the eye of your needle is wider than your needle that affect the end result.
