Just for discussion, comment below what your personal favorite hood is. Mine is my modded pipeliner.

Call me weird, but I don't trust those auto darkening ones.

Gold #10 lens I can see better VS my auto darking.

I know it’s an old comment but I tried a passive Jackson hood today for shits and giggles, and I honestly think I can see the weld and seam better! Just wanted other opinions on the matter. Weld a lot of stainless and galv 16-18 gauge. Those stainless seems can be a bitch to see.

I'm on the fence getting an auto darkening helmet because that's just something else that could fail. Even the expensive Lincolns fail.
@danielstephens65 жыл бұрын
okay so Passive sounds way more safe and way more reliable. Auto darkening sounds dangerous and could malfunction... ID say Stick with passive Helmet man! you ever herd the saying that everything old was always better? well i think this applies here. a little annoying flipping the lens but worth it in the end.

I agree that old school is the way to go, but the degree of safety depends on the hood. A $300 auto hood will outperform a $30 hood. But passive, IMHO, is just much tougher and can take a beating.

I mainly use my Speedglas 9100XXI, but I do have an old Forney lift front helmet with a gold solid shade for backup/road trips.

I haven't welded for years and have only used the flip type. Last time I welded the auto darkenings were just comming out. Probably will restart with the flip next year.

These auto darkening helmets scare the crap out of me, I'm afraid they'll quit working mid weld and then what happens?
@SubDude350Welding5 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, with most modern hoods, even if the lens doesn't darken it still provides protection from UV light. I would 110% do some research on whatever hood you want to purchase to make sure it's entirely safe to use

For whatever it's worth, my cheap Harbor Freight solar powered auto darkening helmet stopped working after sitting in storage for a couple years. I found out by trying to weld something. I stopped after 5 seconds or so. My vision is fine but it was only a handful of seconds. I was seeing a spot for a few minutes afterwards but it went away. I'm tossing it and looking at a fixed shade helmet now.

I only use a auto dark for tacking repetively but if I’m welding seams all day I use my tiger hood love my Lincoln electric 3350 but get annoying switching it to grind mode unlike my tiger hood I just have to flip up my lense but each has it own advantage but that tiger hood takes a beating !

I tried an auto dark while I was learning and kept getting a headache ... I switched to a passive hood ... the fabri metal pipeliner and I will never use another type of hood except a wendy's flip lense pancake in passive
@SubDude350Welding5 жыл бұрын
Those pipeliners are damn good. Probably my go to hood more often than not, just because of the weight and durability

@@SubDude350Welding I agree and I've got 5 of them each modded differently, but I prefer the straight basic pipeliner with 2 inches cut off the bottom

What head support system do you guys recommend?
@RipRoaringGarage3 жыл бұрын
I got a simple Hobart and a Lincoln Electric auto darken. I use the auto darken one. I have a broken neck, so the head bob thing is a no go for me. (physically cant lol). What I dont like about the LE, is that a tiny amount of weld spark gets past, and you see it....then, any false strike, where youre too close, a tiny spark happens, but youre not welding, that all gets hidden. SHade goes dark, and theres a delay...during which, youre rod is now a resistor heater! And you cooked a rod. It is really...REALLY annoying, plus inhaling all that vaporaize flux all at once...yum.

What’s safer?
@SubDude350Welding5 жыл бұрын
If you get a good autodarkening hood, both will be just as safe. Budget and preference play more into which one people get. But I trust my eyes with my Jackson and much as I do any of my passive hoods.

What do you think about this one?
@SubDude350Welding5 жыл бұрын
If possible, try and spend a little more on a better hood. But an eBay hood should be fine, it just won't be the best. I've got one that works just fine
