Star Trek didn't initially take off because people weren't used to such an idea in the 60's... in fact, the reason the original series had a second pilot is that the studio thought the first pilot was too cerebral for audiences. Having a female first officer, etc. They wanted to get rid of Spock because of his "satanic" appearance, they felt it wouldn't sit well with the bible belt south. Then you had the interracial crew, in the 60's, having a black woman in such a position of power was groundbreaking. Star Trek also addressed contemporary issues, just set them in a futuristic setting. Star Trek is for people who don't want to see explosions and conflict every two seconds. :)

***** If "people weren't used to such an idea in the 60's" why did Doctor Who took off? Could it be that it was more interesting. It wasn't the period it was the story. Love Star Trek Next Gen by the way.

sinjisdf1 Well, Star Trek was a new type of sci-fi, it wasn't the typical sci-fi of the time.
@UhhhhhnooOOo00oO9 жыл бұрын
sinjisdf1 Star Wars is an action based movie. That's why there is excitement constantly. Well not really. Most of the memorable scenes are dialogue. Let's forget about I-III. Star Trek was a TV series that was made into a movie..way later. On a television series you can't have action every second and tremendous changes to character and storylines. In a movie..you have to do it all in an hour and a half or so..or humans create their own action. Oh yes

Why is this even an argument? Do we have to hate one in order to love the other? I don't think there's really any grounds to argue the superiority of either franchise. You kind of have to just watch them both and decide which one you like more. For me, it's Star Trek. This video would've been better if instead of arguing which is better they'd simply discuss the differences and similarities.

Anonymous " Do we have to hate one in order to love the other?" You're the one puting it in emotional terms of love and hate. Star Wars is pure Social Darwinism, i.e. some are claimed to be naturally more powerful than others, and therefore rule over others as a result. Meanwhile Star Trek is about populism and equality; meanwhile Star Wars is basically a galaxy conquered by the alien from "Day of the Dove" locked in eternal conflict to amusement of the midichlorian cooties. So a good vs. plot would be where Kirk has to infiltrate the Star Wars galaxy to save them, and ends with a speech where he warns against accepting simple answers to complex questions.
@Wells3069 жыл бұрын
Star Trek tackles questions of humanity we'll probably still be asking and struggling with for generations to come. The quality, depth, and character development of Star Trek's writing simply is well beyond that of Star Wars. Star Wars is solely meant to entertain. Think of both series from someone living in the 24th century, and and try to imagine what show has a higher probability of being laughed at by society.
@archer19499 жыл бұрын
Star Wars is mythic. It has primordial archetypes that are timeless. King Arthur, Tolkien, Gilgamesh, The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Progress is an illusion. History is cyclical. The perfect society will never happen. They conveniently ignore how this "ideal" society works. Watching Star Trek, especially TOS is already laughably dated, steeped in the 60's. Their handling of "issues" are ham-handed and blatantly obvious. Even the Star Wars Prequels, clumsy as they were, had a better handle on how governments and "human" nature works.

One split I have between the two pop culture franchises is actors. I remember my parents watching Star Trek when I was about 3 years old, I ended up being attracted to Patrick Stewart. I remember watching Reading Rainbow back then too and I didn’t know that Levar Burton was the guy with the visor over his eyes. I was about 8 years old when I first saw Star Wars and I was impressed with the acting of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness and Billy Dee Williams with a lot more action and stuff that Star Trek doesn’t have. So I would choose Star Wars. Star Trek to me is like something that just comes around a lot. I could never even let go of various things and people who I loved seeing back then and still do to this date.

The moral of Star Trek is peace and exploration. What's the moral of Star Wars-- be born strong with the Force, since otherwise you're screwed? The problem with Star Trek was the movies, starting with Khan; ie. Khan was originqally intended to present the dilemma between elitism and populism, and whether mankind would, pursue superiority rather than individuality-- but also that advancement required a sacrifice, in that equality also meant giving up greatness. Khan wasnt evil, as was made clear from the beginning; he was just obsolete-- which is why he chose to live on his own planet and be ruler, rather than join 23rd century society and be a commoner-- as he explained to Kirk with just a reference, he believed that "it's better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven." (And also Kirk dropped all charges against him, so he was a free man; meanwhile the planet was no worse than the Botany Bay colony in Australia). Of course, this was too deep for the popcorn-crowd, and so it was dumbed down to good ol' sensationalism, and Khan became the new Darth Vader equivalent, i.e. a ruthless criminal who just sought power. So naturally some deus ex machina destroyed the planet and blew Khan out of the Phantom Zone.

From what I can understand in general terms Star Trek fans are more serious sci-fi connoisseurs, than most Star Wars fans. Star War is really a standard heroes journey story set in space, it could have taken place in any time period or location. It is not an unique story, but the characters and locations make it great. That why it appeals to such a wide audience. Overall Star Trek is much more intellectual and has its own strong following in the sci-fi world. Granted I know plenty of people who are complete geeks about both. Personally I like both but I can watch the original Star Wars movies over and over again.

I'm in love with TOS (even if I reeeally like TNG's crew as well) and to see the dynamics on the vessel, the love and the respect between Kirk, Spock, Mccoy, Scotty, Uhura and all the others, the way they treat the women and the foreigners and the other species always makes me hopeful for our future. I think that star wars with its everlasting fight between good and evil will never truly describe the shades of human nature and the variety of beings that could dwell in our galaxy alone! but it provides good entertainment anyway :) and I must admit that I like lightsabers more than phasers (although nothing can beat a tricorder 😂)

Star wars fans have no nickname. While Star Trek fans are called Trekkies and they are way more hardcore with their sci-fi. If any offense was given, i meant no harm.

Bob they’re called Star Wars fans Inside the Star Wars fans, there are 3 groups: Prequel fans Sequel fans Originals fans Prequel and sequel fans usually argue though it’s common for people to be an original and other thing fan. Finding a fan that fits in all 3 groups is quite rare

Actually, Luke is incorrect. When Star Trek first came out in the 1960s it was popular as any TV show could be. However, the studios didnt know how to measure their viewership correctly. Because of their inaccurate polling, it appeared as though the show was not popular among their target demographics and so planned to cancel after 2 years. When the public got wind of this, they flooded the studios with letters begging to bring the show back. And so they did for a third season. Again, because the studio execs still werent enamored with the show, they aired the 3rd season on a Friday night at 8 or 9pm. In the 1960s, thats when the majority of their target audience went out; they didnt stay at home and watch the tele. And so that effectively killed the show. Also, the studio execs didnt like Rodenberry and his liberal/progressive nuances so they were actually glad to be rid of it. A resurrection followed in the early 1970s when Star Trek the animated series came out. And eventually the movies followed in the 1980s. but the followup early 1970s would never have occurred if the show wasn't already popular, and same with the movies. Also, sci fi conventions weren't a new concept. They've been occurring before the 1970s, just in a much different form. But at these conventions you also had a lot of star trek fans. The first official star trek convention didnt come out until 1970s, I believe. So Richard, you are correct. LLAP.

MANXAN H in Star Wars you have the death star, it destroys planets right? Well in Star Trek you have Q, The most powerful alien species known to man in the 24th century, as an example of his power, he could snap his fingers and anything he choses would disappear from existence, including HALO, the death star OR all the universes.
