In my homebrew world, Tarrasques live in the deepest pit of hell where they watch over space prison. They can talk to and sense any creature in this space prison, and are actually decently chill. The problem is they were decreed by the Gods to guard the prison forever, as they are the last of the First Races, the first races who ever lived that were massive and almost all died out. If they ever leave, they lose their minds incredibly quickly (like dragons from the astral plane) and start rampaging, losing their ability to telepathically communicate.

Willian Cruz I’ve heard of a great many campaigns centered around the tarrasque, so I guess it’s just personal experience. Also, it really depends on what is considered a noble. Is it anyone with power? That’s a lot of people, so it’s extremely likely that most campaigns will have some. Someone born into the position? That’s less people, but could still be a lot depending on the campaign.

Soo, um fun fact, you know how the Terrasque is not immune to acid? Well there's some super strong acids and super bases which have the same end result as super acids, that are so strong that only teflon is not dissolved by them but will basically go through anything else. Let me put it this way, there are acids and bases in real life that are so strong that if someone were to empty a small vial of them into their backyard they wouldn't stop eating through the ground for several miles.

If Lifferlass doesn't intend to kill the party, merely maim them, it is technically level 0. Or you can fund an expedition to kill a terrasque, covert the fame and notoriety into a title and not worry about terrasque and nobles as much. Hello that's a good ten sessions of fun right there. Or create a campaign covering said elements and call it Noblesse Terrasque. Sell it to Wotc and use the proceeds to become one of the 1%. i believe CR should be changed from "challenge rating" to "Combat Rating," as the number is only referring to if you got into a physical fight with the monster and not how the monster would interact with his daily life, that part is up to the GM's imagination. Combat is easy to focus on and streamline as most monsters of the same type will fight similarly. Meanwhile, out of combat, they might have different social standings or a cursed weapon, something outside of the stat block that would make them more or less dangerous.

Before watching, I’m going to guess nobles are worse. The Tarrasque may be an incredible threat if you get in its way, but there is only one in the entire world. Just one. And it sleeps for months or years at a time. Nobles are everywhere, and killing one will usually just result in them being replaced by somebody even worse. They are always active, always plotting, always making things worse for everyone else...

True, but if the party is powerful enough you can kill *anyone*, not get noticed and get away with it. Kings are the easiest prey, normal nobles are a bit harder but still easy as long as you destroy the whole family. The hardest ones are crime syndicate bosses: they're always paranoid and it's for a good reason so they're prepared for anything.

@@orr4337 correct. Though with a smear campaign and a good amount of money, a noble has the power to completely mess you up. You end up with trained assasins employed specifically to kill you, and after no one offers you a place of rest or food to eat, the noble will parade your severed heads around while being praised by everyone for defeating the "vile and evil adventurers" which in my opinion makes a noble more powerful. Sure, the lich has access to funds and whatever but anyone who looks at the lich instantly is well aware that its a lich. A noble though? Has similar if not more funds and can rally people against you.

It's often forgotten that nobles generally have access to "Summon Adventurer". It's a spell like ability that has expensive material components on part with 10th level spells. There is no known problem that it can't solve. It can be used to defeat a Tarrasque, a god, a plane of existence, and in some cases entire universes. Many campaigns focus on this ability, though not often in an overt manner.

This is why milestone xp makes more sense than enemy killing xp. If my characters are doing a jailbreak, it's probably most in their interest to NOT kill anyone and be all sneaky. I'd say that's worth some xp. A bard distracting the bank guards while the rogue slips in the back to steal the gold? xp. A barbarian showing up a whole town in a drinking contest? xp. Basically, anything you can justify using your characters abilities for, whether it's performance, lock picking, or just constitution, I think deserves some xp.

I think he more pointed out that the nobles will always end up getting replaced. Really, your best bet for killing a noble and truly getting away with it, is helping another noble with a coup. But even then, to tie up loose ends, that noble may just kill you or claim that they "discovered" that you murdered their predecessor. Hell, even with the Soviets taking over the Russian Empire, it slowly became just a new Russian Empire, with a new Tsar. It was all about who you knew. Same old class system, just new players in a new class.

I remember running the Mistborn tabletop system once. Noble is literally its own race for the reasons described in this video. Seriously, it really surprises me how little nobles and politics are utilized as a form of danger by DM's. I did like the Mistborn system of having three different health bars to encapsulate this idea, and think the idea of Social Reputation should be worked into dnd in some way. I mean, not all the time, but like an optional rule mechanic is something DM's should totally be allowed to do by saying to the party "This is your Reputation health bar. If you fuck with a noble, they will attack it in some way over time." Hell, technically if money is really no object for a high ranking enough noble, equipping a major city's army with enough magic arrows to shoot at the Tarrasque can kill the thing. We calculated out once how a level 20 wizard necromancer in dnd can use just their undead army of skeleton archers equipped with magic arrows, how many die each turn, and how much money it all costs. And the answer is....not as much as you think lol. Now imagine instead of shitty skeleton archers, you instead have an army of trained soldiers. Yeah. Maybe the Tarrasque is a HUGE challenge for a party, but numbers win in dnd. That's just how it is.

Two of the nobles in my campaign had to flee the country after being caught by the party that snuck into their home, in response he and his wife furthered their aid of an unknown entity and even looked into the ability to become immortal via lichdom, after time the party discovered the wife, who ran immediately and they faced a boneclaw. 8 levels later they encounter her again and destroy her original body activating her ritual, she reformed as a lich and attacked, after a tense fight they destroyed her and realized there were disgusting vile decrepit like bodies of different sizes in the ornate jars around the room, they destroyed them all, but didn't realize the phylactery was left unharmed in the center of the magical circle of the room a simple ruby amulet, later on they faced the lord who was an even more powerful lich which had taken a lone path rather than taking knowledge from a previous liches life like his wife. He managed to put down half the party before having to escape and rethink his plans, their original contractor in the back of their minds still unknown. The party expects to see them again, as their rogue was cursed with a powerful spell that will take time to remove. They've been a part of the campaign since lvl 3 when the party went on their first big boy quest to investigate the local nobles, and i plan on them continuing their revenge for as long as they can!

Its how I've run werewolves ever since, as opportunistic ambush predators who hide in crowds. Parties either get hit when they're weak then they play werebeast wackamole in the nearest village until they feel safe.

The Noble's defeat gives you a steady stream of XP in the form of guards, law enforcement, bounty hunters, tax collectors, soldiers, assassins, and so forth. Depends- are you fighting the forgotten Realms tarrasque that singlehandedy slaughtered combined dragonflights of both Chromatic & Mettalic in an attempt to stop it- bring piloted by a mad cultist, or your generic monster manual tarrasque? Best use of the creature is it’s beefed up dragon magazine statblock- including the 1d1000 shell diamonds reward, and a preliminary fight with a tarrasque cultist from one of the monster cult dragon magazine articles- butter it up with the return of the beast cultist trying to awaken the beast by killing dragons to summon it- and you’ve a small adventure to take on- there’s also the introduction of a tarrasque stomach dungeon you can add to the mix if I recall.

I saw a reddit post a while ago that did some math. If we assume that a max level fighter has enough magic gear to ensure that he never gets hit by normal people unless they roll a natural 20, it still would only take around 400 archers with longbows dealing average damage to kill him in one round. You'd need a lot more for the tarrasque, but a large city has thousands of soldiers.
