Hi, being a German 991.1 Carrera S owner and searching for a nice air cooled model, I really appreciated your overview and all the numbers and facts. Especially for someone who is a little bit more into 911 in general this and the other videos are great to watch. Thank's for your effort!! It seems that there are more Porsche enthusiasts in the US / UK than in the motherland of the brand.

I almost made the mistake of purchasing a 996. When I mentioned that I was saving money to buy one to the owners of the shop that was repairing my audi, they just looked at me and went back to talking to each other. At that moment I decided to follow my dream and get an air cooled 993. Maybe I should go back and thank them.

Just bought a 1996 993 Carrerra in Iris blue with marble grey leather sports seats. Came with the 6-speed manual box, sunroof and rear wiper(set up for LHD! as usual). Been looking for that exact spec for about 10 years! Came up on Pistonheads early in September and I snapped it up straight away for a very good price. Had to drive up to Yorkshire to get it, but worth the trip. Been out for a quick blast today with the missus, even she said 'I like the colour', praise indeed! Like the vids, keep them coming! Kind of glossed over the 993 Targa which is a shame because it had the beautiful split rim alloys. Mine was a 1998 Midnight Blue with Grey. Originally wanted one in Arena Red but I saw mine, fell in love with it, and owned it for 5 years. Appreciation in value in that time convinced me to trade up to 2010 Cosmos Black with Black 997.2 Targa 4S and it's all the car I'll ever need. Now it's 10 years old and still only 32k miles with no issues ever. I love it. Incidentally an acquaintance of mine owns one of the 5 993 turbo cabriolets that you mention finished in mesmerising special order metallic purple with grey and he still drives it with passion having bought it from a very rich banker when prices hadn't become so scary.

@@JAYREAD Yes, but have never been a fan of the headlights plus the "hatchback" feature of the 997 sold it plus mine is a DSG, fully loaded with launch, sports suspension, factory turbo wheels and 10 speaker Bose. Only option missing seems to be sports exhaust but meh! Can afford 991, 992 but have no desire for those body shapes plus more expense = more caution for me and I'd rather just drive mine carefully but without the worry and depreciation. Have loved 911's since I was 8 and got my first at 27, a '79 GP White with Tartan SC red cowl with 72K. My daily driver for 5 years...

@@JAYREAD Sure 914, 924, 928, 944, 968, Cayman, Cayenne, Panamera I’ve watched lots of range comparison videos. Yours are the best I’ve found, with the exception of the PCA. However, the Porsche Club of America videos are the most detailed but last an hour or so. Far too long for my attention span. Sad you sold your 996. I have a 996 Turbo and prefer the analog feel of the 996 combined with the Mezger engine. I took mine out to Bishop’s Castle out CO Highway 96 then South down Highway 165 past the castle to San Isabel. S turns all the way and back. Just what these cars were designed for. I do believe the narrow bodied 996’s are better looking than the wide bodied cars, but I wanted the Mezger engine. The narrow bodied 996 also have the lowest drag coefficient of any 911 to date. Anyway, have a good Independence Day weekend. Jeff

Interesting that you like 996s. No doubt you will be well aware that the 996 initially suffered from a engine design flaw that allow water to leak into the cylinders. However now you'd struggle to find a 996 with the original engine as they were all replaced by Porsche ( by an improved engine ) at the earliest convenience. But ( and you probably cover this in another video ) there was a magic 996 which was a GT derivative that used the oil cooled 993 engine with a larger capacity and that really is the king, if you can get it. Also whilst I am being boring, that 996 GT3 was the last porsche that had a "true" engine note as all 996s started the trend of synthetic exhaust tones and thats the real reason people like the 993 as the exhaust was a true sound. Personally I think Porsche have completely lost their way with 911s although they'd disagree as they make lots of money from them. 993/996/997 look like 911s to me and now I rather buy something more mysterious like a Ferrari or Bugati as they still have a little mystique to them ( goodness I am dull :-) )

@@JAYREAD Ah now I remembered there was something a little more complex about that GT3 engine and here it is "The engine of the 996 GT3 set it apart from most of the other 996 models, although it shared the same basic design of the standard so-called "integrated dry sump" flat-six engine. The engine is naturally aspirated and based on the unit used in the 962 and 911 GT1 race cars. That engine was known as the 'Mezger' engine, after its designer Hans Mezger. The engine uses the original air-cooled 911's versatile dry-sump crankcase, with an external oil reservoir." I think we decided this was effectively semi-oil cooled when we rebuilt them.

@@JAYREAD Thanks. Its a nice engine. Porsche always fascinate me as if they don't have something ready for a launch, they will sometimes make do with something borrowed from a previous generation. Like the variable valve. You'd have thought they'd have waited another year but no they just wanted to launch the 993, so they went without.
@samuelsnowberry2679
@samuelsnowberry2679 10 ай бұрын
The other thing that is interesting is how people ( and to be fair Porsche dealers tend to interchange this terminology too ) say that the 993 and models prior were "air cooled". Technically they are "oil cooled" of course as that is what extracts the heat from the engine. I guess people intuitively get that, but the reason its relevant from a mechanical standpoint is that you could argue that water cooled engines are also air cooled. Because the water that was used to cool the engine is then run through radiators where air cools it, ready to go back around the block again. But I get it, air cooling sounds more straightforward and does anyone really care 🙂

Very nice, but a bit incomplete, at least as fas as practicality and daily usability goes. There is something to be said about the 1995 models, which, at least in the US market, many consider to be the best buy if one plans to drive the car often, for the following reasons. It is the last year in which the car does not have to pass yearly emissions tests (last year with OBD-I), which is not trivial with air-cooled cars. In fact, this is a major reason why air-cooled cars have disappeared. Only in that model year a CEL is not thrown if the secondary air injection ports become clogged, which happens often and is expensive to fix/clean. And it does not have that pesky factory alarm, which is cumbersome and can even leave you stranded once in a while. A highly debatable downside is the absence of varioram, with the debate deriving from the fact that it adds merely about 13bhp and only when it is running well, which not infrequently it is not, requiring dedicated maintenance. As one might have guessed, I have a 1995 and would not change it for any other model year, for these very reasons. Great car.
@codreamin
@codreamin 3 жыл бұрын
There is a context here of these issues that is lacking. SAI ports can become clogged on both the 95 and 96+ vehicles. Just the 96+ notifies you of it. Simple modifications can be had to deal with the SAI system of which is exactly the same design across the range of 993s, you just get more info through OBDII. The immobilizer (pesky factory alarm) is a very simple system and in more than a decade of ownership hasn't left me stranded even once. Again, like any modern vehicle, change the batteries in the remote every few years and you're fine. As far as the varioram, that is exactly what every 95 owner says to justify their lower power, lower performing engine. Varioram works through vacuum and is VERY simple. It is extremely reliable and requires zero maintenance. The sound change as those intake runners snap open above 5k RPM is intoxicating. Now, if we want to get into the basic maintenance of a 25+ year old vehicle, you'd be hard pressed to find anything as reliable as a 993, regardless of year. All the items you mentioned above are regularly blown out of proportion, mostly by 95 owners. As one might have guessed, I have a 95, 96, and a 71.
@maxagent86
@maxagent86 3 жыл бұрын
When someone lists the cars he owns as part of a response, you can tell that you hit a nerve... In any event, I happen to prefer the induction noise in the absence of a varioram. It is different/better. As the saying goes, to each his own, including the pleasures, or lack thereof, of having to deal with a CEL... By the way, I also own a 964.
