As the video says, it's all about getting the approach speed /gear right , good observations re. the correct lane positioning for your exit, watching where you steer and scanning for traffic to your right , then acting on what you see i.e. slowing / stopping according to the other drivers on your right and ahead of you perhaps turning right in front of you. Enter the r,about when safe and carefully stay in your lane, mirrors and signal to leave the r.bout. Good luck.

Hi, this may sound odd but my particular issue with roundabouts is actually staying in the correct lane at bigger and more complex roundabouts, once I am on it. I observe the signs in advance, adjust my speed, wait for a gap etc and start off in the correct lane but I have a tendency to get confused with the lane markings and drift across to another lane accidentally because of all the white lines everywhere :'). For example, I will be aiming for straight ahead at a big roundabout and be in the left lane (correct lane for argument's sake) but somehow get confused and end up in the middle lane? This is one of the major things holding me back and may affect the safety of others as well as my chances of passing the practical test in a few week's time. Does anyone have any suggestions to help with this? Thank you xx

Large roundabouts can be more difficult than smaller ones for a few reasons - but the biggest tip we can give is to use the traffic sign before the roundabout to understand the layout. Then we can ‘count’ around the exits so we know where our exit is. This video might help: Large Roundabouts | Learn to drive: Intermediate skills kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXSvqYSarZaYbdU

ok 1 question; let's say i'm taking the driving test and the instructor says to go straight ahead. if the road markings show that left lane is only for left turn, and that's the lane i'm in, should i turn left or should i continue straight ahead in that lane? if there are no other cars could i go straight, or should i still turn left
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 7 жыл бұрын
+96NNK If you find yourself in the wrong lane, change to the correct lane if it's safe. If this isn't possible, just obey the road markings and follow your lane. Even if there are no cars nearby, disobeying road markings will be a Serious Driving fault and fail the test. Taking a 'wrong turn' is no problem if your driving is safe.

I live near a roundabout which has no direction arrow markings. I use the left lane to go ‘straight on’. My definition of straight on here is to continue on the same road. In reality it is not straight on but round to the right a little, Considering a clock face, I enter the roundabout at 6.00 and leave at 1.00. It is certainly not the left or right turn on the roundabout. Occasionally like today, I have some one next to me in the right line, expecting me to turn left, even though I’m not indicating. He was going ‘straight on’ he overtook me on the roundabout then brake checked me and gesticulated at me. I feel I was correct here.

In our opinion it’s safest to follow the directions on the sign before the roundabout. However there is always the chance that another driver crosses the roundabout in a different way. Whether they are right or wrong, look out for this happening again and always avoid driving beside them. Drive defensively!

That sounds tricky! You would need to use the road signs and markings to work out which lane you should be using, as each junction is different. I'd ask your driving instructor, or if you've already passed a more experienced driver. Good luck!

Only thing i don't understand is going straight ahead while in right lane. If the left lane is clear after the first exit, can i change over on the roandabout into the left lane as i approach 12 oclock second exit? Or is it not allowed? I'm just confused. Is it a MUST that you need to stay inside your lane? Or can you change while on the roadabout in the left lane. Like just like you would as a right turn if it's clear? Or it is you MUST stay in right lane until you've reached your exit while going straight?

UK roundabouts are not fir for purpose. They make the assumption that road markings and signs will be maintained, and that people will be able to see and read those signs. They did not think about the user or accessibility when they designed this system 60 years ago

That is the bloody confusing thing! When turning right you mentioned to smoothly change the lane to outer one from middle, however later you mentioned changing lanes in roundabout is dangerous.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
When turning right we will need to change lanes before taking our exit - this is fine. However if there are two straight ahead lanes at a larger roundabout then it would be dangerous to change lanes with other traffic beside us.
@jac1793
@jac1793 6 жыл бұрын
Continuing from this... if there are 2 straight ahead lanes - I am going straight ahead and another car adjacent to me is also going straight ahead. Should i 'expect' them to exit into the new right hand lane on the road? If they also wish to exit on the new left hand lane following the second exit and they are still adjacent to me, who has right of way seeing as one of us will be cut up depending on who gets in front of who first?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
When there are two straight ahead lanes, traffic should stay in their lane as they cross the roundabout. So traffic approaching in the left lane should stay in the outer lane of the roundabout and leave into the left lane afterwards, and traffic approaching in the right lane should use the inner lane of the roundabout and leave into the right lane afterwards. In theory it 'should' be safe for traffic to do this side-by-side, but we prefer to stay just behind (or diagonal) the car in front of us in case they do a careless lane change.

Roundabouts are interpreted completely different by various examiners. They vary so much, so nobody has a solid answer, I've never had a consistent answer talking to these so called professionals. Failed my test because he thought I was in the wrong lane. Got a refund because he was wrong but it doesn't change the result of the test and now I've gotta wait 5 months to even try again. Driving is so poorly examined, after you're able to drive properly, its pure, pure luck depending on what examiner you get and what happens on the road. Someone hits the back of you while you're at a stop? Fail. Two different speed signs up because they changed today, that's a 50/50 fail. So much luck involved its so stupid.

When there's no road markings how you gonna know to use the right lane to go straight on if the left is left only ? This happend to me and the instructor was telling me to get into the right lane witch totally confused me as i only use the right to take the 3rd exit but at this roundabout straight on wasn't past 12 o clock and you normally only use the right lane if straight on is past 12 o clock. In other words if straight on is past 12 o clock you use the right lane, if not you take the left lane unless both lanes say you can go straight on.

If there are two "straight ahead lanes", does this always mean the exit will also have two lanes? If not, what if I am in the left lane trying to exit and someone slightly ahead of me in the right lane was trying to as well, we would both be trying to exit from two lanes into one. What would happen in that situation? Thanks!
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, if there are two lanes marked for straight ahead, there should be two lanes on the exit. In theory vehicles in the left lane should use the outer lane on the roundabout and exit on the left, and vehicles in the right lane should use the inner lane on the roundabout and exit on the right. However, since we can't trust other drivers it's best to stay behind the car in front in case they do something unpredictable.

We would stick to the normal lane, and only use the right lane to go around the roundabout and back to your original road. If we use a different road position to normal we might mislead another driver or pedestrian that hasn't spotted there is no right turn for us - which could lead to danger. Sticking with the normal lane usage is safer for everyone :-)

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks. It seems now that approaching a roundabout in two unmarked lanes with four possible exits, it still makes sense to keep to the left lane even when taking the second exit, especially as the second exit immediately goes into one lane. I signal left as soon as I pass the first exit and watch for any fast car trying to overtake and race me in just a few metres for that second exit!

I think it would depend on where the exits were, but if we assume there is a left, straight ahead and a right turn at the roundabout - then we would use the middle lane for straight ahead.

It really is difficult to know how to treat some roundabouts - because we need to look at the road signs, road markings and even our sat-nav sometimes. If you find out that the lane you've chosen goes somewhere else, then just follow it and have a little detour - which is far better than a dangerous lane change and possibly a crash! It will all get easier with experience.

@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be much simpler - and there are single lane roundabouts in quieter areas. However, the more lanes a roundabout has the more traffic it can handle, so you will find 2 or 3 lanes in busier locations. These can be a challenge, so keep a look out for signs and road markings to show which lane to use!

Great video thanks, but may I ask a question - at 1:18 (going straight ahead) when you're saying "making sure to follow the lane around the roundabout carefully" why is your car almost in the middle of the road instead of keeping to the left? If another car was turning right, tight against the middle of the roundabout you would very very close to it. Isn't the point of having roundabouts with two lanes so that theoretically two cars can go round together side by side (like one turning right and the other going straight ahead for example)? Thanks for your answer in advance

You are right - I probably could have steered a little wider around that roundabout, although I think there was still enough room for another car beside me. I probably was a little lazy because I knew that there wasn’t any other vehicles near me, but still that’s a poor excuse! 🙄

Do I need signalling left or right before turning from such road? I am not talking about lane that has dual marking i.e. left&straight or right&straight arrow, I signal accordingly there.*
