The ideal is not to change lanes, whenever someone changes lanes, traffic slows down, especially because a reduction in speed tends to amplify due to different reaction times.

Totally depends on what's causing the traffic. There's also nothing more annoying than someone constantly changing into your lane. Lane 1 generally will have better drivers such as lorries who know how to drive in traffic and leave a gap to prevent elastic banding; using less fuel, less brakes, more relaxing. In heavy traffic everyone should stay in lane unless they absolutely need to change and leave plenty of gap so you arent constantly accelerating and braking

When it’s normal driving stay on the outer right side (besides England), when it’s heavy traffic and cars are going more than half under the speed limit example: everybody is going 20 in a 50 zone then just pick one where you will have to move and brake the least. If you’re going to continue on that road for long then stay in a fixed lane in heavy traffic. Otherwise just stay on the right (left for England) side like in every country. Take the German autobahn as an example, they’re the best at it and it has the least amount of accidents and traffic

@imAlico642 ай бұрын
I'd like to go to the right (your left) lane when things slow down, as the lorries will have a better overview, keep a better distance which will lead to a more steady speed. It's troublesome to get out of that lane again when speed picks up, but saves a lot on frustration and continously having to clutch and brake your way forward.

@Scoupe4002 ай бұрын
lol this has been tested before. And whilst they concluded changing lanes is no better than keeping in lane , I’d agree only to a point. Long queues you’re often best to stick to a lane. I’ll typically grab lane 1 because there’s less stop / start. Lane 3 is where you’ll get the late accidents. But if you look far ahead and see stuff changing lane (say out of 1, or 3) there’s probably an obstruction there. Initially it can seem deceiving because that obstructed lane moves quicker; often because people are polite and letting them out. Just swallow the delay. In contrast the morning rush hour on the M6 was a fine art. Again lane 1 was quickest until the last second you’re met by a slip road joining; then it’d stop, so lane 2 was better. But that new traffic jumps out into 2, then 3, hence those start stopping too; so it’s back to lane 1 soon after a slip. However, all that’s a waste of time , because you’d want your exit that has 2 mile of tailback, so now you’ll loose all that ground to folk willing to push in at the last second - scary to watch when lane 2 is in full flow. The M40 meeting the M42 is an excellent example of people failing to merge. Actually it’s failing to hold a 2 second gap and allowing a merge later on. Instead the tailgating and egos make it all come to a stop. You’re wondering how long you’ll be stuck for … no, on this stretch it’s 95 percent this reason and it clears in half a mile. You get other anomaly jams like this - for no reason other than bad driving then it clears. Hence, in contrast, it’s so much easier to pick one lane and keep to it for the very long distance jams.

In all honesty, just going with the flow in one lane (as long as it isn't fully stopped) will only work out a minute or so behind someone who (aggressively) jumps from lane to lane. Chill, relax, flow.
@brupleal2 ай бұрын
You call that a traffic jam!? Noobs, I challenge you to try that here in São Paulo, Brazil. Our transit authorities are corrupt, inefficient garbages, and nothing makes the slightest sense in our roads. Around here, the right lanes are the best one in most cases, even when there's a merging, because Brazilian drivers have the "left lane fever" and jump there right after merging in. The exception is when it's too filled with trucks, because then it turns really dangerous, like I said, our authorities are incompetent maggots, so we have lots of junkyards on wheels in the roads.

You could have saved a lot of fuel/emissions by using electric cars instead, they're ideal for traffic because at standstill the drivetrain doesn't need to idle and the efficiency of a combustion car at slow speeds is horrible as well. Most efficient speed of a combustion car is in the highest gear with low rpm, around 40 mph where the air resistency is still below critical.

I drive from Ayrshire in Scotland to Kent often. The further south you go, the worse the standard of driving gets. It’s usually due to a majority of drivers embracing their “freedoms” (aka, not following a structured driving system) 😂 I thoroughly enjoyed my time living in Belgium where trucks were glued to the right lane unless they were passing or allowing room for oncoming traffic. They were also regulated to a maximum speed. Most drivers only went to a middle or left lane to pass and then immediately proceeded to go back to a right lane. Basically, there wasn’t too much weaving and lane discipline was practiced.

If you're going to pass someone you have to actually pass them. I'm so sick of people trying to pass someone with a 1mph difference. If someone is driving 58... Then you simply can not overtake them at 60mph because that's the speed limit. Either you do a overtake or you DONT. You're creating a hazardous environment with a Trafic jam buildup. It's safer to actually commit to the overtake and go over the Speed limit within reason.
