Let me tell you a secret....for white clothes, use a good powder! I used liquids for years and my whites always turned gray and it wasn't for lack of detergent. I have a water softener so it wasn't minerals. I switched back to powder just for my whites and they have remained white. Pods or liquids are fine for colors but whites...powder only...specifically Tide or Cheer for me.

In the winter when it's colder the cold water is even colder so I always warm up 4 oz of water in the microwave in a Mason jar and drop the pod in to disolve it then pour it on black clothing in the washer and then rinse the jar with a little warm water and add that to the washer till all the soap is out of the mason jar.

Powder =disinfect clothes and remove odor (syntehtic clothes, tip: add small quantity to liquid to remove smell) Liquid = does not leave white spots, can be more powerful, does not wash color like most powder (there are powders that do not wash off color) Pods = looks cool!! Do not buy cheap detergents, look at ingredients the more it has anionic or ionic surface-active agents in most cases it is better. Cheap powder = more white spots Temperature also is very important when washing, higher the temperature better it is washing (but watch out on temperature recommendation on clothes). If your washing machine stink just wash some clothes at 90°and it will be much better. Soft water is better then hard water for washing clothes, so all detergents are good for it. But if you have hard water you need to put more detergent to achieve same results. Good Luck!!

I have used most major brands of both powder and liquid. I prefer liquid and at that, I have been using Arm & Hammer for the last 8 years - hands down it's THE BEST! I also add about 3 oz per load of Apple Cider Vinegar, as it acts as a very effective anti-bacterial agent and adds a sweet/fresh smell (as compared to white vinegar, but I have my preferences). In a past life, I did Costuming for Living History, and Theater.

My rule of thumb when doing laundry is when washing dark colored clothing that I don't want to fade I always use cold water with liquid detergent because it dissolves much better imo. And for all other clothing I use powder. So I use both, but the most important step(only for top loaders) to me and yes it's more time consuming, is NOT to preload your medium to large laundry loads but wait until the cycle starts. Then drop in one to two items at a time depending on garment size(towels one at a time). I usually drop the most soiled in first which gives it the most detergent and less competition if you will against other clothing. Because all the garments doesn't get the entire washing cycles I always use the longest washing timer I can so they can wash as long as possible. Just make sure you have the load ready before the wash cycle starts. Some folk may think it's odd but don't knock it until you've at least tried it for a top loader. You really get to see the detergent go into action and if your washer allows you to see entire washing portion before drain like mine does you will get to see if those more soiled garments use more detergent meaning the water go from soapy to an almost non-soapy look and then you can add more right then to your liking. Granted you do this when you'll be around house doing chores and not in a rush to leave home. This is how I teach my daughter's to wash clothes and they really like it. Yes I'll admit I've started a load and walked away doing something else and heard the agitator start swooshing once the tub has filled and hauled butt to washer to throw clothes in. If you're often forgetful you can set a timer on your mobile phone or Alexa to return in a few minutes depending on how much water your putting in washer tub.

One advantage to powder and pods is, if your washer doesn't have a detergent tank as featured at 2:57, that they properly support delay start features. Many places have their electricity billed on time-of-use rates, where rates are cheaper at night, so delay start allows one to fill their load at a convenient time then have it start once off-peak rates kick in. With liquid, if your washer doesn't have smart dispensing, the detergent will come into contact with the clothes and cause stains; pods are completely immune to this regardless of washer type, and the same is true with powders in top-loading machines with detergent drawers.

I saw a video of a professional dissemble a washing machine to clean inside. The inside (or outside of the tank where you don’t usually see) was molded even though the owner did deep cleaning with oxiclean once a month…because they used pods. Same thing can happen if you use too much liquid. They recommend to use powder or if you didn’t like it, always put minimum amount of liquid and do extra rinse. Pods can be used for full roads (one pod each time).

Bio-film build-up is what you are referring to, it is more common with liquid detergent than powder. I was having such problems with my machine smelling (even with regular maintenance cleans) and laundry was smelling too, after using a non-bio liquid detergent exclusively for 1+ years, I recently switched back to a biological powder for most things and the smelly-machine issue has resolved and clothes and towels smell fresh and clean once more… I will continue to use the liquid detergent for delicates and low-temperature or hand washes, but will otherwise use powder.

Yess, IMO the powder is the only way to go, being eco-friendly and cheap are nice things, but the anti-biobuildup is a deal winner. Neither the pods nor the liquid have a built-in oxygen based whitener which is a powerful bacteria killer. Sadly, some powders don’t have it either, so it’s important to read the label

I often had truble with powder not dissolving and clogging up the washing mashine. Washing mashines were not the gratest in the flats I rented tho. At the same time pods were just a little too expensive for me as a student. Liquid turned out to be the way to go. If you buy it in jugs, it is cheaper then powder that you can buy in the store. At least where I live. I usually order two 4 liter (aprox. 2 gallon) bottles of locally made liquid detergent on the Internet.

The original Tide powder is the strongest detergent out there. It is so strong, I basically use a tiny amount at the bottom of the cup -- I'm pretty sure most people are using several times too much every time. Just try smaller amounts, this thing is really powerful. My problem is the box stinks in the drawer. So I get a big plastic jug -- like one that had kitchen oil, or bleach or anything else - I rinse and dry it well, then use a funnel to pour the Tide powder inside the plastic jug (try to do this outdoors so you don't breath it). Plastic jugs are perfectly tight and don't smell at all. That's how I store my powder Tide

in India Tide is usually marketed in a cheaper detergent segment. It is actually one of the cheapest detergent both economically and functionally, it is usually synonymous with harsh type of detergent, which would render your clothing bad after only a single use, no one in their right mind would use Tide for their good pair of clothing in india. I like liquid, I only use about half the recommended amount. I refill the bottle at my local bulk market. I add an oxygen/enzyme powder if my whites are particularly dirty. I tried omo pods and liked them but there is too much detergent in a single pod for most of my washes and it was building up so I gave pods up after a while. I think it's easy to forget that it's the soap coming OUT of the clothes that gets them clean. Often the answer to a better wash is less detergent not more (or not overloading the wash so the clothes can wash and rinse better)

My husband has allergies to many cheap detergents and Tide never had any issues for him. I used to avoid buying it because it costs more but I try to always use coupons and since it is much more concentrated you can use a lot less and actually save money :) I will add that the "Simply Tide" line is NOT worth the price. I used to use liquid detergent and fabric softener with my top loader and for just over a year with my new front loader, until it broke. The repairman said that it was because of the buildup from the liquid detergent and softener. They contain animal fats that build up on the drum, which can cause it to become unbalanced and break, as in our case. That's what also causes the stink, too. He said to only use powdered detergent and dryer softener sheets, which is what I have used exclusively with our replacement washer. Haven't had an issue and it's been 10+ yrs. I also don't have a problem with the washer stinking as long as I leave the door open between loads. Stay away from the liquids and pods to increase the life of your washer and eliminate the stinky buildup.

Well said. I’ve tried to tell family and friends about liquids, gels and pods. They are terrible for the machine, I’ve only ever uses powder. Powder is best for whites as well, and I never wash in cold water, cold water is awful. We don’t shower in cold water or wash dishes is cold water. I use nothing less than 40 degrees in the uk 104 in the states and that’s for dark colours, light and mixed coloured loads, then 60degrees in the uk 140 in the states for my Whites, and some bedding then 90 degrees in the uk 194 in the states for towels, rest of the bedding, kitchen towels and cloths and the animals bedding.

For my Samsung top load washer, liquid works best for me. Pods didn't seem to wash that good. Powder is seldom seen. It doesn't have the high efficiency rating. Liquids were the first upsell. With the funky colors the detergents looked more modern and advanced. This largely worked as liquids dominate the US market now. The second upsell was pods to get even more money out of consumers. Promising convenience and combining with other brands under the same conglomerate's umbrella to create new products. E.g. Tide plus Fabreze (both Proctor & Gamble brands). Both of these are mostly gimmicks designed to increase profit margins. Powder is still the most economical and a good all round performer. Not to mention the cardboard packaging is much more eco friendly. The color enhancers are better in liquids though so it's not a complete scam. Still not worth it imo. Powders are better for whites.

I never use pods for either dishwasher or clothes washer on points of 1) high cost and 2) cannot measure to the load size and soil. Washing in cold water is a bad move regardless of the type of detergent (liquids also need to "dissolve" and disperse into the water). Cold washing is a large factor of smutzy washers and the need for washer cleaning products and special tub cleaning cycles.

We enjoy a top loading washer and my bf enjoys cold cycles and free and clear products, mainly All free & clear. I wash my clothes on warm(towels/linens on hot) and I'm guilty of using an (honestly huge) excess of laundry products as I want my clothes to smell ultra fresh and clean. Like a few pods, prob 2 portions of fab softener, 4th cup oxy powder, dash of gain powder, sanitizer, beads, a scent booster pod.. like all in ONE load, ik. (I was the kid that concocted alot growing up) I haven't noticed any problems with build up, probably due to primarly doing hot/warm and I pre soak pods and put powders in first to dissolve. I've noticed pods, if not submerged, stick to clothes and powders on top don't dissolve and stain. Gain is my favorite generally, except fabric softener. I enjoy the scent also of original snuggle dryer sheets, fab softener, and wax beads as well. Lastly downy rose fabric softener is one of my faves as well. I'm trying to use less laundry items as I'm learning more about the effects on the washer and clothes.

From experience using all three types, over the years since childhood, I recommend the liquid detergent too the most. Sure, it isn't perfect either, but it is way less messy still than old school powder and still does the job right for more loads than power or Tide pods. Lol. At a little bit less money per bottle of detergent, too. You just need to pour in the right amount for whatever cycle and type of load you need to do to effectively use liquid detergent, in the most cost effective way.

Pros and Cons for me: Pros: If you put too much detergent in a washing machine, it usually foams up so much and creates a big mess. But with pods, even if you have a small load, the detergent does not foam up nearly as much. And when it does, it dissipates really quickly. Cons: The problem I see with the pods, is the fact that you cannot use them right away if you use the pre wash cycle. Most, if not all machines require you to put pods directly into the machine drum. Meaning if you put it in immediately and use the pre wash cycle, the detergent will be washed away, and there won’t be any detergent for the main wash part of the cycle. So if you want to use pods, you would essentially have to wait for the pre wash cycle to be finished, then add the pods, and then restart the wash. So I really only use pods for big loads, and only when I don’t have to use the pre wash cycle on my machine. Those are my thoughts.
